Abstract

The availability of quality feed is a crucial factor in supporting the productivity of Peranakan Ettawa (PE) goats, which have high potential for both milk and meat production. The main challenges faced by farmers, particularly those in the Kerta Bangkit Livestock Group, Gangga Village, North Lombok, are the limited availability of forage during the dry season and the high cost of commercial feed. To address these challenges, a community service program was implemented, focusing on the utilization of organic waste as an alternative feed source. The program was conducted on June 25, 2025, involving 21 farmers as active participants. The activities included a preliminary survey, participatory socialization, training on semi-moist feed fermentation techniques using organic waste, and field mentoring. The training results showed an improvement in farmers’ knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into nutritionally valuable feed. Field evaluations recorded an average body weight gain of 62–85 g/head/day in PE goats after receiving fermented feed. In addition to reducing production costs, the program also contributed to environmentally friendly waste management. Overall, this community service program successfully enhanced farmers’ independence, supported the sustainability of smallholder livestock farming, and provided positive impacts on both community welfare and the environment. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Buffalo milk (Bubalus bubalis) is known for its high nutritional content and has significant potential as a raw material for economically valuable dairy products. This study aims to analyze and compare the nutritional composition of buffalo milk including water content, dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, and minerals from three regions on Sumbawa Island (the districts of Sumbawa, Dompu, and Bima), as well as to identify the factors that influence these variations. The research employed a descriptive-comparative design involving 15 lactating female buffaloes that were traditionally managed (five animals from each district). Milk samples were collected directly from farmers, stored under controlled conditions, and analyzed in the laboratory using proximate analysis. The results show clear regional differences in nutritional composition. Buffalo milk from Dompu exhibited the highest nutritional quality, while Sumbawa had the lowest values, with Bima falling in the intermediate range. In contrast, mineral content was similar across all regions and tended to be lower than values reported in previous studies. These variations were associated with differences in feed quality, soil fertility (including the influence of volcanic soils), the supplementation of leguminous feed, physiological condition and lactation stage, as well as possible genetic variation. Overall, environmental factors and genetic characteristics play an important role in determining the nutritional quality of buffalo milk on Sumbawa Island.

Abstract

Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) is a modern approach to livestock management that leverages sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency, productivity, and animal welfare. In developed countries, PLF is regarded as a revolution in the livestock sector; however, in the context of traditional livestock farming in Indonesia, particularly among small-scale beef cattle farmers, its implementation poses a dilemma between opportunities for transformation and risks of disruption. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA framework, critically examines the implications of PLF for traditional farmers by synthesizing literature from Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar (2010-2024). Through thematic analysis of 40 selected studies, we find that PLF offers substantial benefits, including improved feed efficiency, early disease detection, and enhanced animal welfare, but also faces significant barriers, such as high investment costs, limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and risks of smallholder marginalization. By integrating evidence from both technological and socio-economic perspectives, this review provides a holistic analysis of PLF’s dual role as both a transformative tool and a potential disruptor in developing agricultural contexts. The findings underscore the necessity of context-sensitive adoption strategies, informed by incremental technology introduction, supportive policies, targeted subsidies, cooperative models, and capacity-building initiatives. This study contributes to the literature by offering a policy-relevant framework for aligning PLF with inclusive and sustainable livestock development in Indonesia and similar settings.
