Abstract

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a cultivated commodity that is widely developed because of its economic value and high nutritional content. However, in aquaculture activities, problems such as water pollution reduce water quality. This problem means continuous water changes to maintain water quality. A recirculation system can be a solution by reusing water. The use of filters is an important factor in a recirculation system. One alternative filter is chitosan derived from crab and shrimp shell waste. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of chitosan as a recirculation filter. The study was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications. Each treatment is a variation of the concentration of chitosan as a filter. Analysis of measurements carried out was absolute weight growth, specific growth rate, survival, and water quality. Based on the ANOVA results, each treatment had a significant effect on the absolute weight growth of tilapia, P<0.05, with P3 being the most significantly different. At the same time, the specific growth rate and survival of tilapia did not significantly affect P>0.05. The water quality measurements showed that the temperature, pH, ammonia, and DO values were still by the quality standards of tilapia aquaculture, with P3 treatment, which gave better water quality results. Based on the study results, the optimal concentration of chitosan as a filter in supporting tilapia growth was in the P3 treatment, which was 50 mg.

Abstract

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) was carried out by the reduction method with leaf extract of Ketapang (Terminalia catappa). The biomolecules present in the extract generated the reduction of Ag+ and Au3+ ions from AgNO3 and HAuCl4, respectively. The growth of nanoparticles was monitored by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The maximum absorption of biosynthesis of AgNP and AuNP were observed in the respective range of 421-431nm and 530-535nm. Those peaks correspond to surface plasmon absorbance of AgNP and AuNP, respectively. Analysis on the functional groups change of the extract by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) Spectroscopy showed the formation of carbonyl- from hydroxyl-groups which suggested the oxidation and reduction processes involved in the formation of both nanoparticles. The average size distributions determined by PSA (Particle Size Analyzer) are 55-71nm and 18-44nm for AgNP and AuNP, respectively. Morphology of the silver nanoparticles was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and the structure of the compounds was characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The shape of AgNP varied from triangular, cubic and hexagonal polyshaped, while AuNP were spherical. XRD studies showed that the nanoparticles obtained were crystalline gold and silver.

Abstract

Tilapia cultivation in Tarakan City is one of the sources of community livelihood. However, environmental problems cause fish to be susceptible to diseases caused by bacteria in the waters. This study aims to increase the potential of chitosan with nanoparticle size, which is added to feed for the survival and growth of tilapia seed. Nanochitosan is an extract from crab or shrimp shell waste, which functions as an immunostimulant. By utilizing the active nature of the nanoparticle size, it can provide better growth and survival of tilapia seed. The research was conducted with an experimental method of two treatments and three replications. One treatment was without the addition of nanochitosan and the second treatment was with the addition of nanochitosan in the feed. The results of the synthesis of nanochitosan obtained size based on the amount with the highest intensity at 537.17 nm. Water quality were still optimal, namely the temperature was 27-29°C and the pH was between 7.3-7.8. The dissolved oxygen content (DO) obtained in the two treatments was 1.3-5.8 mg/L. The range of ammonia levels in the two treatments was 0.1-3.5 mg/L. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the treatment using chitosan nanoparticles in the feed was more effective than without using chitosan nanoparticles in the feed on the growth and survival of Tilapia Seeds. The results of the T test showed that the daily specific growth rate (SGR) in all treatments was not significantly different (P>0.05), but the survival rate (SR) of tilapia seed in all treatments was significantly different (P<0.05). These results can be concluded that the addition of nanochitosan in feed has a significant effect on increasing the survival of tilapia seed.

Abstract

Tilapia is a much-loved source of animal protein. The success of tilapia production is characterized by optimal fish growth. The process of growing tilapia has several problems including water quality. Fluctuating water quality causes fish to be easily stressed and susceptible to attack by pathogenic bacteria. Ketapang leaves have antibacterial properties because they contain metabolites. This research was conducted to determine the content of active compounds from variations in the age of ketapang leaves including young, old, and dry ages and their effect with EM4 on the growth and survival of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 treatments and 3 replications. Phytochemical tests on three types of ketapang leaves showed that dried ketapang leaves contained more metabolites, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and phenols. Based on the statistic analysis (ANOVA) showed that variations in each control treatment, young, old, and dry ketapang leaves had a significant effect on the absolute length growth and growth rate (SGR), but had no significant effect on the absolute weight and survival (SR) of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). However, from the three age variations of ketapang leaves, it was found that dry ketapang leaves were the best species for growing tilapia.

Abstract

Koi fish is part of ornamental fish that is liked by the public. Koi fish culture is influenced by good water quality as a life medium. The problem in koi fish farming is the decline of water quality caused by pollution and the results of koi fish metabolism. The experiment methods are koi fish rearing tanks preparation, making a series of recirculation aquaculture system (RAS), stocking koi fish seeds, and measuring water quality. The RAS technology range consists of a pipe, a pump, and a filter tank consisting of an arrangement of charcoal, bioball, zeolite, and sand. For one month the maintenance of koi fish using RAS technology gave good results on the growth and quality of the cultured water. Koi fish seeds before rearing measuring 5-6 cm experienced an increase in the body length to 8.5-10.5 cm. The results of measurements of temperature, pH, and DO of koi fish culture water before recirculation include 31.2°C; 7.6; and 4.8 mg/L, respectively. After the recirculation process, the results of temperature, pH, and DO measurements were found to be 29.7°C; 7.1; and 6.0 mg/L, respectively. This shows that RAS technology can to optimize the temperature, pH, and DO of koi fish cultured water. Optimal water quality will lead to good koi fish growth.
