Abstract

Abstract

Learning mathematics is important for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, improving students' creativity and self-confidence is still a major concern, especially in solving complex mathematical problems. This study analyzes the relationship between Creative Performance Self-Efficacy (CPSE) and mathematical problem-solving ability on number pattern material. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with participants of grade VIII students of Jambi City 1 Junior High Schools selected based on high and low CPSE categories. Data was collected through CPSE questionnaires, problem-solving tests, and semi-structured interviews. The study showed that CPSE is not always directly proportional to mathematical problem-solving ability. Students with high CPSE do not always perform better than those with low CPSE. Some students with low CPSE can develop more systematic and practical problem-solving strategies. In contrast, students with high CPSE have difficulty understanding problems and executing the right solutions. Factors such as conceptual understanding, accuracy, and learning experience also influence problem-solving success. The conclusion of this study confirms that a learning approach that only focuses on improving CPSE is not practical enough without strengthening conceptual understanding and problem-solving strategies. Therefore, a scaffolding-based learning approach, problem-based learning (PBL), and differentiated instruction are needed to accommodate the needs of students with different CPSE profiles. In addition, metacognitive strategies such as self-evaluation, error-based learning to identify errors, and reflective discussions to evaluate solutions are also essential to implement.   Keywords: creative performance self-efficacy, mathematical problem-solving, students’ strategies, number patterns.

Abstract

Understanding mathematical concepts is one of the essential and fundamental aspects of mathematics learning in schools, with the aim of enabling students to develop the ability to understand mathematical concepts, explain the relationships between concepts, and apply concepts or algorithms flexibly, accurately, efficiently, and appropriately in problem-solving. This study aims to analyze and understand the extent to which students comprehend mathematical concepts, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the information processing system at MAN 1 Muaro Jambi in supporting students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. This research is exploratory in nature and employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consist of three tenth-grade students selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used in this study are a mathematical concept comprehension test on the topic of SPLTV and interviews. Data analysis was conducted by reducing data from written tests and interviews, and by using methodological and source triangulation. The results of the study show that the three subjects demonstrated different levels of conceptual understanding, which were based on the memory storage components involved in each subject. It is therefore concluded that students whose information processing reached the Long Term Memory stage demonstrated a better exploration of mathematical concept understanding compared to those whose processing only reached the Short Term Memory and Sensory Register stages.

Abstract

Reversible thinking is the ability to reverse the order of thinking, understand two-way relationships, and logically and reflectively retrace initial information. This study aimed to describe students’ reversible thinking abilities in mathematical problem solving based on adversity (AQ). The research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive design with 21 eighth-grade students of MTs Annajah Sungai Luar. From these, five subjects were selected purposively to represent the AQ types: quitter, camper, and climber. Data were collected through AQ questionnaires, Test of Reversible Thinking (TTR) essay tasks, and interviews. The results indicated that students with the quitter type were unable to fulfill all aspects of reversible thinking. Camper-type students could fulfill two aspects, namely negation and reciprocity, while climber-type students were able to fulfill all three aspects: negation, reciprocity, and returning to the initial condition. The findings suggest that students with higher AQ demonstrate stronger reversible thinking skills in mathematical problem solving. This contributes to mathematics education by emphasizing the importance of fostering reflective thinking and resilience in the learning process.

Abstract

This study examines the creative thinking of Grade 12 students in solving open-ended statistical problems. The research addresses the problem of limited understanding of how students with different mathematical ability levels demonstrate creative thinking when working with open-ended statistical tasks, and aims to describe the fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration reflected in their solutions. Three students representing high, medium, and low achievement levels were selected through purposive sampling to capture varied mathematical abilities. Data were collected through written tests and interviews, and analyzed using indicators of fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. An exploratory, qualitative approach was employed to gain in-depth insights into students’ reasoning processes. Results show that the high-achieving student generated two valid datasets (mean = 25, median = 23, mode = 20), the medium-achieving student produced one nearly accurate dataset (mean = 24.9), and the low-achieving student produced a dataset with a mean of 23.5. For the second problem, all students obtained b = 12, but only the high-achieving student justified why it is the minimum. In the third problem, all calculated the average yield as 1.225 tons, yet only the high-achieving student provided a contextual interpretation. These findings indicate that open-ended tasks reveal clear differences in students’ creative thinking. The results suggest that incorporating open-ended problems into statistics lessons can enhance students’ creative mathematical reasoning and support the development of higher-order thinking.
