Abstract

This study presents a conceptual framework for the modification of Kansei Engineering (KE), incorporating nudging-enabled features with human-centered design (represented by Design Thinking (DT) methodology) principles applied in healthcare services. Kansei Engineering (KE) and Nudge Theory (NT) have a similar goal of influencing and directing users’ behavior and intentions based on the fulfillment of their critical needs. KE focuses on translating customer emotional needs into design parameters, whereas NT stresses changing customer behavior using indirect instructions and positive reinforcements. Once emotional satisfaction is obtained, it is hoped that positive behavior will be promoted. Addressing customers' emotional demands combined with nudge-based features in patients’s healthcare service experiences is a strategic necessity that can result in considerable commercial benefits. Healthcare that creates positive emotional connections can improve patient happiness, inspire loyalty, and build a strong, differentiated brand in a competitive environment. More importantly, it may boost patient recovery rates and promote more sustainability practices in hospitals or healthcare domains for a long-term period. Hence, this study introduces a novel integrated framework that combines KE, NT, and DT to align emotional satisfaction with behavioral outcomes in healthcare service design, particularly in developing emotionally and behaviorally supportive strategies for non-critical patient care.

Abstract

The personal care industry relies on product innovation, distribution, and promotional strategies as key factors for business success. Product availability and effective promotion play crucial roles in customer satisfaction and retention. However, limited research discusses how these two aspects interact and affect business sustainability in the personal care industry. To address this gap, this literature examines how prior studies have conceptualized and examined the relationships among product availability, promotion, customer satisfaction, and customer retention within the personal care industry. Relevant studies from marketing and distribution were systematically reviewed, using publications collected from ScienceDirect. We initially gathered 3,491 articles related to personal care, restricted to the last ten years, classified as research articles, and aligned with keywords such as marketing, promotion, advertising, discounting, branding, product completeness, and product availability. From this process, ten key journal articles were selected for further analysis. The findings reveal that product availability enhances customer satisfaction and encourages repeat purchases, while promotional strategies foster positive product perceptions and strengthen brand awareness. Together, these strategies provide a cohesive approach that significantly impacts customer retention. Overall, this study highlights the importance of combining product availability and promotional efforts to improve customer experience and support long-term success in the personal care industry. However, this study is limited to a conceptual framework and does not yet test the proposed relationships empirically. Future research is recommended to validate this structural model through application in real-world cases within the personal care industry, which would provide stronger practical insights and implications for both academics and practitioners.

Abstract

The habit of sitting hunched over in adolescents is one of the risk factors for postural disorders that can have an impact until adulthood. Sitting posture correctors are present to aid in forming ideal sitting habits. This study aims to analyze the specifications of existing sitting posture corrector products and the needs and preferences of adolescents regarding the use of sitting posture correctors. The results of the analysis show that existing sitting posture correctors have adjustable features so that they can be adjusted to environmental conditions. In addition, adolescents are enthusiastic about the existence of sitting posture corrector products, especially those that have a practical design, are comfortable to use, and are easy to operate. Sitting posture correctors that are commonly preferred by adolescents have a curved cushion shape, with a fairly soft or at least smooth texture, and a long adjustment range. By considering the variations in adolescent physical conditions and user preferences, the development of an adjustable and dismantled sitting posture corrector is considered functional for use in forming better sitting posture habits in adolescents.

Abstract

Healthcare often struggles to obtain patient comfort and autonomy, leading to confusion, frustration, and dependency on healthcare staff. In addressing this concern, this study is conducted to propose an integrative framework of Kansei Engineering (KE) and Nudge Theory (NT) within the Design Thinking (DT). It is a novel approach called KENT-DT. Utilizing a human-centric design methodology, this study implemented semi-structured interviews and direct observations with hospitalized patients to assess their emotional responses and interactions with existing beds and hospital staff. The data disclosed some critical pain points, including lack of intuitive control, discomfort, and restricted patient autonomy in bed adjustments, which too often led to dependency on hospital staff. To address these issues, this study proposed an improved hospital bed prototype utilizing KE for patient emotional design considerations and NT to subtly encourage positive patient behaviors, such as maintaining ergonomic bed positions to prevent pressured body portions. Some features of the redesigned bed are offered, such as visual cues, intuitive control location, and ergonomic support enhancements. It is to reduce dependency on staff and increase patient autonomy. According to an evaluation by a doctor and a hospital staff member, it has been concluded that there is an expected increase in patient satisfaction and autonomy. This study brings expected implications. It suggests that integrating KE and NT in medical and hospital product design can foster a more patient-centred healthcare experience, encourage speedy recovery, and reduce staff burden. Future study is highly encouraged to implement the prototype of redesigned beds and evaluate the long-term impact of them on patient recovery. The adaptability of patients across diverse healthcare facilities may be considered as well.

Abstract

A study on the intervention of human factors engineering (known as ergonomics) on sustainable living based on biopsychological needs was conducted, taking samples of small housing inhabitants. In total, 90 participants were involved. Those who were living in small housings have a significant challenge of how to live comfortably given very limited space. The measurement of the quality of human life through WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF) and ergonomics-based usability were used to describe the current human well-being satisfaction, to propose the modified physical facilities, and to validate the proposed design and improvement. The findings showed that all implemented improvements have supported the inhabitant’s quality of life.

Abstract

Individual Work Performance (IWP) is often considered one of the principal factors influencing the effectiveness of an organization, encompassing three principal components which are Task Performance, Contextual Performance, and Counterproductive Work Behavior. When employee work effectively and mentaly healthy, it will encourage flourishing in the workplace and improve organizational performance. Although individual work performance measurement instruments have been used several times, none have been able to capture all relevant aspects comprehensively. Hence, this research focused on assessing the relevance of adapted individual IWP items using Discriminant Content Validity (DCV). It involved the panel that consists of ten experts (n = 10) in several different categories such as psychometrician, researchers, state civil and professional industrial organizational psychologists. The expert panel evaluated the item-theory congruence for item alignment with dimensions and concepts. The findings showed the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) values, ranging from 0.772 to 0.96, reflected strong inter-rater agreement and consistency in judgment. Also, one-sample t-tests on DCV estimates of all 18 items met the criteria of discriminant content validity. These findings offer meaningful implications for practitioners and researchers seeking to enhance performance assessment and foster well-being in organizational contexts Keywords: discriminant content validity, individual work performace, workplace wellbeing

Abstract

Tunjungan Street has become one of the historical public tourist destinations in the city of Surabaya. One of the attractions of Tunjungan Street is the architectural design of the buildings that still maintain their historical themes from the past. Art deco is a historical design style that is still preserved today on Tunjungan Street. However, the seating facilities along the Tunjungan Street area still have forms and functions that resemble the average seating facilities in various other public places. The purpose of researching aspects in the design of thematic seating facilities is to create an opportunity to beautify the tourist area and, at the same time, provide visual appeal for various activities conducted in the Tunjungan Street area. The method used in this research is the double diamond model, where the design process involves discovering and defining. Qualitative research is applied by collecting data through interviews with designers and psychologists, as well as observations of public tourist attractions. The collected data will be evaluated and used in designing a mind map. The innovative result of this research is the recommendation of aspects in the design of seating facilities for Tunjungan Street.
