Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi pengaruh teknik bermain peran dengan naskah dan kecemasan siswa pada bahasa asing terhadap kompetensi berbicara siswa kelas sebelas. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental dengan rancangan 2x2 faktorial dan 68 orang siswa dipilih secara acak sebagai sampel penelitian. Data di analisis dengan menggunakan ANOVA dua jalur dan Uji Tukey. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa (1) ada perbedaan yang signifikan terhadap kompetensi berbicara antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik bermain peran dengan naskah dan siswa yang diajarkan dengan teknik konvensional; (2) ada pengaruh interaksi pada teknik mengajar yang digunakan dan kecemasan siswa pada bahasa asing terhadap kompetensi berbicara siswa; (3) ada perbedaan kompetensi berbicara antara siswa yang mempunyai kecemasan siswa pada bahasa asing yang tinggi yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik bermain peran dengan naskah dan siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik konvensional; (4) ada perbedaan kompetensi berbicara antara siswa yang mempunyai kecemasan siswa pada bahasa asing yang rendah yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik bermain peran dengan naskah dan siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan teknik konvensional. Abstract

The objectives of the study was, first, to investigate whether there is a significant effect of numbered head together and question answer relationship technique on studentsâ?? reading comprehension; second to compare the effect of NHT and that of QAR on reading comprehension. Conducted at the eighth grade students of MTs Birrul Walidain NW Rensing in the school year of 2012-2013, this study used posttest only control group design. The sample used was obtained by cluster random sampling technique. The total number of sample was 66 students, divided into three groups; NHT,QAR and conventional technique groups. The study involved 6 sessions of treatment and at the end of the treatments, a reading comprehension posttest was conducted . The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, namely One way Anova and T-Scheffe. The study found that first, there is a significant difference in reading comprehension among students who are treated using NHT,QAR and those treated using the conventional reading technique. Second, there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are treated using NHT technique and those treated using the conventional reading technique. Third, there is a significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are treated using QAR technique and those treated using the conventional reading technique. Fourth, there is no significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are treated using NHT and those treated using QAR technique. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesopanan tutur kata pada interaksi kelas bahasa inggris bagi pelajar asing dan implikasinya terhadap proses belajar mengajar pada kelas bahasa inggris bagi pelajar asing di smp negeri 2 tabanan pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Permasalahan yang pertama, mengungkap jenis strategy kesopanan yang digunakan oleh siswa dan guru kelas delapan pada kelas bahasa Inggris bagi pelajar asing di SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. Permasalahan yang ke dua fungsi atau intruksi apa yang terimplikasi dalam setrategi kesopanan tersebut oleh oleh siswa dan guru kelas delapan pada kelas bahasa Inggris bagi pelajar asing di SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. Permasalahan yang terakhir adalah implikasi yang ditimbulkan terhadap implikasinya terhadap proses belajar mengajar pada kelas bahasa inggris bagi pelajar asing di smp negeri 2 tabanan. Penelitian ini dirancang dengan menggunakan pendekatan penelitian kualitatif. Adapun data pada penelitian ini didapat dari percakapan pada proses belajar dan mengajar di dalam kelas dengan menggunakan rekaman video dan wawancara. Data yang di dapat dalam bentuk percakapan. Percakapan tersebut diidentifikasi dan dianalisis secara deskriptif untuk mengetahui strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh guru dan siswa. Kemudian, analisisnya dilanjutkan dengan mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis fungsi yang terkandung dalam strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh mereka, dan terakhir, dilanjutkan dengan menganalisis dan mendiskusikan implikasi dari kesopanan dalam tutur kata dalam interaksi kelas pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan kesopanan mengadung lima strategi, yaitu; secara langsung dan blakblakan tanpa kemasan kesantunan, secara langsung dengan kemasan kesantunan positif, secara langsung dengan kemasan kesantunan negatif, secara tidak langsung, dan secara diam. Fungsi dari kesopanan bisa dibagi menjadi tiga, yaitu; ekpresif, intruksi/perintah, dan bersifat member pentunjuk atau penjelasan. Kesopanan juga menimbulkan implikasi terhadap hubungan antara guru dan siswa, motivasi dalam belajar, dan sukses dalam belajar. Kata Kunci : Kesopanan Tutur Kata, Strategi Kesopanan, Tindak Tutur, and Interaksi Kelas bagi Pelajar Asing This study aimed at investigating the politeness in EFL classroom interactions and its implications toward EFL teaching-learning in Smp Negeri 2 Tabanan in Academic Year 2013/2014. The first problem was to reveal the kinds of politeness strategies which were used in the classroom interaction by the grade-eight EFL teacher and students of SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. The second problem was the kinds of instructional function implied in the politeness strategies used by the grade-eight EFL teacher and students of SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan in EFL classroom interaction, and the last problem was the implication of politeness strategies towards English teaching-learning process in SMP Negeri 2 Tabanan. The research was designed by using qualitative research. The data were taken from the conversations of the teaching and learning process in the classroom through video recorded and interview. The obtained data were in the form of conversation. The conversation was identified and analyzed descriptively in order to know the politeness strategy used by teacher and students. The analysis was continued by identifying and analyzing the functions which were included in the politeness strategies used by them, and the last, it was continued by analyzing and discussing the implication of the politeness are occurred at the EFL classroom interaction. The result of the study show politeness was conveyed through five strategies, namely; bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record, and saying nothing. The functions of the politeness can be divided into three, namely, expressive, directive, and representative function. The politeness were found to bring implications toward teacher-students relationship, motivation for learning, and success in lerning. keyword : politeness, politeness strategies, speech acts, and EFL classroom interaction.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan, menganalisis dan menjelaskan tentang macam-macam kepatuhan dan ketidakpatuhan terhadap maksim Grice, percakapan implikatur, dan faktor ketidakpatuhan terhadap maksim yang diproduksi di dalam kelas. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru-guru dan siswa-siswa kelas tujuh dan delapan dari Sekolah Internasional Gandhi. Sebagai sebuah penelitian kualitatif naturalistik, data di kumpulkan melalui observasi dan interview yang kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teori Cooperative Principle Grice (1975). Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa guru-guru dan siswa-siswa mematuhi semua maksim Grice dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar. Dalam penelitian ini juga ditemukan bahwa guru memproduksi persentase yang tinggi dari flouting maksim. Guru sering memilih untuk memberikan instruksi secara tidak langsung di dalam kelas dan berharap siswa untuk mencari makna tersembunyi. Di sisi lain siswa memproduksi persentase tinggi dalam violating maksim dan infringing maksim. Dalam hal ini, siswa gagal mematuhi maksim karena mereka tidak mampu untuk berbicara dengan jelas dan kurangnya kemampuan dalam berbahasa Inggris. Lebih jauh lagi ditemukan bahwa guru dan siswa lebih sering menggunakan flouting (53.55%) dan violating (46.66%) dalam interaksi kelas. Penelitian ini juga menunjukan bahwa guru dan siswa memproduksi flouting dan violating dari maksim quality, quantity, relation dan manner. Guru dan siswa memilih ketidaklangsungan dalam berbicara dan tidak mematuhi maksim Grice yang bertujuan untuk menunjukkan kesopanan dan membuat lelucon. Ketika konsep dari face threatening act dilibatkan, maka guru dan siswa akan menggunakan percakapan implikatur dan sering tidak mematuhi prinsip-prinsip dalam percakapan. Kata Kunci : Kepatuhan terhadap Maxim, Ketidakpatuhan terhadap Maxim, Percakapan Implikatur, Kesopanan This study was intended to describe, analyze and explain types of observance and non-observance of Gricean Maxims, conversational implicatures and factors of non-observance produced in the classroom. The subjects were the teachers and students of grades seven and eight of Gandhi Memorial International School (GMIS). The data for this naturalistic qualitative study were collected through observation and interviews which were then analyzed by using Paul Grice?s (1975) Cooperative Principle theory. The study showed that both teachers and students observed all of the Gricean maxims in certain part of classroom teaching activities. This study also found that the teachers produced high percentage of flouting the maxims. Teachers often preferred not blatantly giving instructions in the classroom but hoped the students to find the implied meaning. Meanwhile the students produced high percentages of violating the maxims and infringing the maxims. In this case, the students failed to observe the maxims because they were unable to speak clearly or lacked language ability in English. Furthermore, in conversational implicature, it was found that teachers and students used flouting the maxims most (53.33 %) than violating the maxims (46.66 %) in classroom interaction. The study showed that both teachers and students flouted and violated maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. However, teachers and students preferred indirectness and did not observe Gricean maxims with the intentions of showing politeness and making jokes. When a face threatening act was involved, they employed conversational implicature and often violated the cooperative principle of conversation. keyword : *Observance of maxims, Non-observance of maxims, Conversational Implicature, Politeness*

Abstract

The central intention of this study was to analyze the English teachersâ?? strategies in teaching speaking and reading comprehension skills in SMPN 1 Selong. It was conducted to get detailed information about the studentsâ?? responses toward their teachersâ?? strategies in teaching speaking and reading comprehension skills. This study employed a qualitative research design. Necessary data were gathered using open-ended question, classroom observation, interview, and questionnaire. The result of this study revealed that the three teachers applied teaching speaking and reading comprehension skills strategies in three stages; Pre-stages, Whilst-stages and Post-Stages. From the three teachers observed, they employed various stategies in each stage with different reasons. In general the studentsâ?? responses toward their teachersâ?? strategies in teaching speaking and reading comprehensions skills were good enough as their instructions were clear and understandable. Based on those finding, it can be concluded that the English teachers need to increase their knowledge and experience in order to understand the concept and reasons in using the strategies for teaching speaking and reading comprehension. This study recommended that English teachers should have awareness to the significance in choosing the appropriate strategies for teaching speaking and reading comprehension skills. Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing representation of ten sociocultural sub aspects, namely: age; gender; social distance and status; politeness strategies; genres; registers; major dialects; and Background Knowledge of the Target Language Group (BKTLG) and Crosscultural Awareness (CcA), in an e-textbook, Developing English Competencies (DEC). Discourse Qualitative Content Analysis was the research method and DEC was the data corpus. Data were gathered through e-textbook observation and were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings showed that: age group of >12-18 years contributed 40% of the total 117 units; 1.098 units signified man, and 321 units were of women; 71% of conversational texts showed intimate social distance and the rest 29% indicated distant one; negative politeness strategies were employed most often (40.12%); non-drama/prose/poetry genres occupied 66% of the entire units; informal words and/or expressions were the most frequently appeared register; British English dialects gained 70% of the total 197 occurred units; 62% of the texts were BKTLG-related, leaving the rest 38% of them CcA-related. Abstract

This study aimed at describing and explaining the experiential meaning, interpersonal meaning and textual meaning as well as the nature of schematic structure in the students? writings under study. This study used descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis as its technique. In collecting the data, some techniques were used such as content analysis, document analysis and also interviewing. This study involved 24 students of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Kubu in the academic year 2013/2014. Thus, the object of this study was 24 students? expository writings analyzed through Systemic Functional Linguistics. From the result of the study, it was found out that the students expressed the experiential meaning by using six process types. Mostly, they used material process in their writings. The students expressed the interpersonal meaning of the text through the use of declarative, imperative, modality and personal pronoun. It was revealed that the expository texts under study were mostly constructed in declarative forms. The students expressed the textual meaning of their expository texts through developing themes and rhemes of the clauses constructing the texts. For that reason, the thematic development or progression was analyzed to recognize the textual meanings. Meanwhile, it was identified that twenty three expository writings were built in three main stages, while there is one text which was constructed in two stages or generic structures. The three stages cover introduction (thesis), main body (arguments) and conclusion (reiteration).keyword : Discourse Semantics, Expository Writing, Systemic Functional Linguistics.

Asril Marjohan, M.A This study attempted to describe and explain (a) the cohesion of English narrative writings produced by the students under study; (b) the coherence of English narrative writings produced by the students under study; (c) the problems encountered by the students under study in creating cohesion and coherence in their English narrative writing. This study was designed as qualitative study. This study was conducted on 30 students of the ninth grade in SMP Negeri 2 Banjar. The data were collected through students? narrative writings, students? questionnaire and teachers? interview. The data were analyzed by using the theory introduced by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The analysis was concerned with grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction), lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation) and aspect of coherence that were found in the students? writings. The results of this study show that (a) the students were able to use the five types of cohesive devices to make their writing coherent. The first cohesive devices used were reference (70.77%) with personal reference as the dominant use. Then, it was followed by conjunction (28.51%), substitution (0.57%), ellipsis (0.14%). Lexical cohesion was used 137 item dominated with repetition (78%). (b) The students? produced coherence of the narratives through the development of themes, and the generic structure. (c) Some problems of coherence identified were the problems with reference (personal, demonstrative), conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal) and limited choice of lexical item. Asril Marjohan, M.A Penelitian ini bermaksud mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan (a) penanda kohesi tulisan narasi siswa; (b) koherensi tulisan narasi siswa; (c) masalah kohesi dan koherensi dalam tulisan narasi siswa. Bentuk penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada 30 siswa kelas Sembilan SMP Negeri 2 Banjar. Data diperoleh melalui tulisan narasi siswa, kuesioner siswa dan wawancara guru. Data yang diperoleh dianalis berdasarkan teori Halliday and Hasan (1976). Analisis fokus pada kohesi gramatikal (referensi, substitusi, ellipsis, konjungsi), kohesi leksikal (pengulangan dan kolokasi) dan aspek koherensi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan (a) Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (a) siswa pada dasarnya mampu menggunakan lima piranti kohesif untuk membuat tulisan mereka menjadi koherensi. Penanda kohesi yang dimaksud adalah referensi (70,77%) yang didominasi dengan penggunaan referensi personal. Kemudian, diikuti oleh konjungsi (28.51%,) substitusi (0,57%), ellipsis (0,14%). Penggunaan kohesi leksikal 137 butir yang didominasi dengan pengulangan (78%). (b) Koherensi teks narasi diciptakan dengan pengembangan ide utama dari teks itu yang didukung oleh ide setiap paragraf, penggunaan generic structure dari teks narasi. (c) Beberapa masalah dalam koherensi yang diidentifikasi dalam tulisan siswa yaitu menyangkut penggunaan referensi (personal, demonstratif), konjungsi (penambahan, pertentangan, sebab-akibat, urutan) dan pemilihan kata dari butir leksikal.keyword : kohesi, koherensi dan tulisan narasi
