Abstract

low interest of students in storytelling activities. Many students showed reluctance to participate actively, often engaging in off-topic conversations or joking with peers during class. This behavior reflected a lack of enthusiasm and motivation toward storytelling lessons. The purpose of this research was to improve the storytelling skills of fourth-grade students (Class IV A) through the use of animated films containing character values. The research method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The results demonstrated that the use of character-based animated films effectively enhanced students’ storytelling abilities. Improvements were observed in the learning process, including increased student engagement, focus, enthusiasm, and confidence in speaking in front of the class. In terms of outcomes, the average storytelling score improved from 55 in the pre-action stage to 68 in Cycle I, and further increased to 76 in Cycle II, reaching a good category. These findings indicate that both the process and product of students' storytelling skills significantly improved through the use of animated films with character values.

Abstract

Mandarin is becoming one of the most essential foreign languages to learn due to China's rapid and dominant economic and political advancements. This trend has led to the integration of Mandarin language instruction in both formal and non-formal education settings, including within the Economics Education Study Program at Tanjungpura University. To select teaching methods and materials that align with student needs, it is crucial to conduct a needs analysis of the Mandarin language courses for 46 students enrolled in the Economics Education Study Program at Tanjungpura University. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through a questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The findings indicate that the majority of students are beginner learners who require foundational learning strategies. These strategies should be reinforced with more interactive classroom activities, such as translation exercises, speaking practice, and group-based learning. The study emphasises the importance of providing materials and topics relevant to students' fields of study. It is anticipated that these findings will serve as a valuable reference for designing teaching methods and materials that are well-suited to the academic and professional needs of the students.

Abstract

The Wura Bongi Monca dance embodies the philosophical values of Bima culture, which can be contextualized to facilitate students' understanding of abstract mathematical concepts, such as set theory. Although most ethnomathematics research has focused on concrete elements such as geometric shapes and numerical patterns in cultural practices, little attention has been given to how cultural values can support the teaching of abstract topics. Yet, local traditions hold significant potential to provide meaningful contexts for such learning. This study addresses that gap by investigating the traditional Bima dance Wura Bongi Monca as a contextual learning resource to introduce set theory and enhance students' problem-solving skills. Problem-solving is a key mathematical competency, indicating conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge in new situations. It also serves as a benchmark for evaluating the impact of culturally contextualized instruction. Using an ethnography approach including literature review, field observations, and interviews with cultural experts, the study interprets the symbolic meanings of Gerak Wura, the dance's core movements, and connects them to set theory concepts. The findings demonstrate that dance can foster conceptual understanding and cultural awareness, support culturally responsive mathematics education while preserving local heritage and providing insights for innovative instructional design.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of photographic image media on students’ poetry writing skills, aiming to determine whether visual-based learning can enhance creativity and writing performance. The research was conducted with 57 Grade VII students during the 2023/2024 academic year using a quasi-experimental design and a simple random sampling technique. The participants were divided into two groups: 30 students in the experimental class, who learned poetry writing through photographic image media, and 27 students in the control class, who received conventional instruction. Data were collected through pretests and posttests to measure students’ poetry writing skills. The results revealed that the experimental class achieved a higher average posttest score (73.17) compared to the control class (51.85). The improvement in the experimental group (57.35%) was considerably greater than in the control group (29.01%). Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test indicated a significance value of 0.001, which is lower than the standard alpha level of 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected, confirming that the use of photographic image media had a significant positive effect on students’ poetry writing skills. The findings suggest that photographic image media can be a powerful instructional tool for teaching poetry writing. By stimulating imagination and visual thinking, this medium helps students express emotions, select appropriate diction, and develop creative ideas more effectively. The study contributes to the field of language education by demonstrating the practical value of integrating visual learning aids to improve students’ engagement and achievement in poetry writing.
