Abstract

Mangrove forests in Jakarta Bay have been degraded and deforested, resulting in flooding, intrusion, abrasion, and reduced fishery production. Mangrove forests have the characteristics of common property resources that tend to be damaged because their rights difficult to enforces. The parties involved in carrying out their role are not optimal so that conditions remain degraded. This study was conducted to find  a form of the arrangement of the party's role in the mangrove forest management. Research conducted at Muara Angke, North Jakarta and Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency. The results showed that key players have not made a comprehensive plan of mangrove forest management. In order to realize sustainable mangrove, it's required to increase the role of the people who originally only  as Subjects to become Key Players through community development activities. NGOs and Research Institutions need to increase the role from Crowds into Context Setters which have great impact in policy making. It is needed to form the Coordinating Team of Mangrove Ecosystem Management Strategy at the provincial and regent levels to synergize the policy and management program of mangrove ecosystems. Empowerment activities need to be carried out intensively to promote changes in the role of mangrove management.

Abstract

Implementing green, eco-friendly, and sustainable development is difficult, hence highly dependent on attainable economic profit, and tends to be exploited massively and destructively to attain the desired benefits. It leads to environmental degradation and, consequently, the diminishing of several natural resources. Therefore, an alternative approach involving effective and Islam-based conservation as well as land restoration is required. In this study, in-depth individual interviews on pesantren Al-Zaytun were conducted to collect the qualitative descriptive data, including biotic aspects, such as plant diversity and wastewater treatment in water management and conservation. The results showed the pesantren Al-Zaytun utilized Tectona grandis and Eichhornia crassipes to carry out land and water management as a sustainable approach to conservation as well as food, water, and energy security development. Therefore, it can become a role model for eco-pesantren development in the modern era, as well as the utilization and management of natural resources for ecological development.

Abstract

Coal mining changed forest structure and composition, it caused large negative impacts on the orangutan. In order to mitigate those negative effects, it is crucial to understand their nesting behavior adaptation in mining area. We investigated 74 times nested event in coal mining rehabilition area (CMRA) in East Kutai and 123 times in the Kutai National Park (Prevab) from October 2013 to September 2014 and include only night nests. We compared both habitats. Orangutans in CMRA built the nest later than in Prevab and used 15 species of trees as nests sites intensively on Senna siamea and Gmelina arborea. In Prevab, 35 species with the higher frequencies on Eusideroxylon zwageri and Dracontomelon dao. The average diameter of nest trees in CMRA smaller than Prevab. The height of nest trees in CMRA with the highest frequency was in 10.1-15 m, while in Prevab was as in 20.1-25 m. Orangutans in CMRA nested at the height of <15 m, lower than in Prevab was >20 m. Reused nest in CMRA was higher than in Prevab. Orangutans in CMRA more often built nests at the peak and limb, while in Prevab at the limb and peak. Orangutans in CMRA had learned to utilize various species and dimensions of trees as the place to build nests.

Abstract

The daily activities of the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus Wurmb) living inrubber forests are poorly understood. The objectives of the research were to studyits daily movement pattern and to determine the time proportion of daily behaviors. The movement of the monkeys was followed by researchers on foot. The behaviorswere observed by scan technique in 15 second intervals for 30 minutes. In rubberforests, lowlands (baruh) were places where the monkey began and ended dailymovements and also conducted most activities. Most inter-water movements of themonkey (about 70%) were conducted twice a day. Statistically, movement distanceand rainfall were negatively and significantly correlated (ґs = -0.58; p < 0.05; n = 14).The monkey spent more time for feeding in the morning and afternoon, and restingat midday. Most behaviors of feeding, resting, playing, and grooming (84.01%) wereconducted at a tree height of less than 15 m. The monkeys moved farther during thedry season to get water and did activities in accordance with height strata to getvarious foods, avoided disturbances, and got comfortable and safe places.

Abstract

National Park is a nature conservation area has a wild  ecosystem and managed by zone system. Baluran National Park (BNP) is one of conservation area in Indonesia covered 25,000 hectare consists of 420 hectare of Bekol’s savanna and 150 hectare of Bama’s savanna. From  4.345 grass-feeding mammal  in BNP, it has estimated that their total weight about  777,000 kg  and  the total feeding need  about 77,700 kg  per day. On the other hand, the biomass of the grasslands only 86.125 kg/ha/day, and both Savannas could only produce biomass about 40,478.75 kg  per day which was  not enough to support the daily animal feeding. Decreasing of the biomass in BNP was assumed as a result of habitat destruction by animal step printings.  The purpose of  this study is to know the effect of animal step printing to the biomass production.  Samples was taking from April to December 1999 using quadrates method which was applied following the animal step printing and the control (non-stepped area). The plant samples were kept in plastic pocket and then identified  in the laboratory. The total  number of quadrates could be detected in this study were 150.  From this study it was concluded that  Grassland which was stepped by banteng, water buffalo and deer  decreased the number of plant species  until 38.88%, 27.27% and 18.18% respectively.

Abstract

Bandung Regency is experiencing increased of air temperature, particularly in the urban area. High air temperature in urban areas is caused by increasing built-up areas and declining green open space. Green open space should be built to lower air temperature and to create a comfortable micro climate. Green open space should be developed at locations with high air temperature to reach its efficacy. This research used spatial analysis to generate air temperature distribution map. The map was used as the basis in developing green open space. The map showed that green open spaces should be developed at several sub-districts, namely Margahayu, Margaasih, Dayeuhkolot, Baleendah, Bojongsoang, Rancaekek, Cileunyi, Pameungpeuk, and Majalaya sub-districts.
