Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of MTs Daarun Nahdhah Thawalib Bangkinang in comprehending recount texts. The research data were collected in November 2016. The subject of this research was class VIII-A which consisted of 31 students. The data were collected by giving a test to the students in the form of multiple choice test. The test contained 40 items. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second year students in reading comprehension is in good level with the mean score of 63.71. Second, the students? mean score in finding the main idea is in good level with the mean score of 63.87, finding the factual information in event is in good level with the mean score of 70.97, finding the factual information in re-orientation is in good level with the mean score of 70.32, in finding the meaning of vocabulary is in average level with the mean score of 58.39, in finding references is in good level with the mean score of 63.23, in finding inference is in good level with the mean score of 63.23, in finding social function is in good level with the mean score of 61.29. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding factual information in event with the mean score of 70.97 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding the meaning of vocabulary, with the mean score of 58.39 which is categorized into average level. It is recommended that the students must do more practice and read books to improve reading skills, especially in finding meaning of vocabulary, because the students got the lowest score in that term. Next, English teachers are recommended that be more creative and use or apply any strategies to teach the reading strategies that can be used in answering reading comprehension questions. The last, other researchers are recommended that conduct this research in other skills.Keywords: Students? Ability, Reading Comprehension, Recount Texts

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to acquired data of students’ perception of Korean Wave in their general knowledge of English listening, reading, and vocabulary as perceived by them. this research was conducted with survey and analysed descriptively. The broad area of survey research encompasses any measurement procedures that involve asking questions of respondents. This method was used to get a clear picture, and to describe students' perception about the Korean Wave in improving students’ general knowledge of English. The practical part of this study is conducted on junior and senior high school students who in Pekanbaru from which The sample includes fans who are keeping up with K-pop and K-drama for more than one year in order to detect traits that are more influential. Moreover, 100 participants responded to the questionnaire used as a research instrument for achieving the goal of this study. The result in general that students in Pekanbaru have a positive perception of Korean Wave in improving their English. It is also found that Korean Wave has motivated them to learn English by themselves. Based on the research findings, it is showed that Korean Wave give positive perceptive on students in their general knowledge of English and can be used by teachers to increase students’ English.Key Words : Perception, Korean Wave, English General Knowledge

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed to finding out the effect of PLEASE strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMP N 5 Pekanbaru in paragraph writing. This study was a pre experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. A single group was chosen to be the sample of this study by cluster random sampling to get six treatments. There were 36 students joined this study as experimental group. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses, t-test formula by Hatch and Farhady (1982) was used. After analyzing the data, it was found out that t-test score was 19.50 while t-table was 2.03 with the level of significant 5% and 2.72 with the level of significance 1%. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted and there was a significant effect of PLEASE strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMP N 5 Pekanbaru in paragraph writing.Keywords: PLEASE strategy, writing ability, junior high school students

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate the level of the eleventh grade students’ ability of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text. The research design is a descriptive quantitative research. There were 32 students chosen as the samples of this research and it was from XI Science 4 class. The instrument of this research was a writing test analyzed by using scoring system adapted from Anderson in Huges (1989) and the students’ scores were matched with ‘The Student Mastery Level’ adapted from Harris (1974). The data show that there were no students who reached excellent level and 1 student (3.13%) was in very good level. Then, there were 13 students (40.63%) who were in good level and 10 students (31.25%) who were in fair level. Moreover, 7 students (21.88%) were in poor level and 1 student (3.13%) was in very poor level. From the collected data, it could be concluded that this eleventh grade students’ ability level of MAN 1 Pekanbaru in writing hortatory exposition text was categorized into fair level. Besides, from the five writing indicators assessed, it was found that the students did the best in vocabulary and style with 3.51 as the average score and the students found it difficult in organization indicator (2.98).Key Words: student, ability, writing, hortatory exposition

Abstract

Abstract: This research is a descriptive-quantitative research design which is aimed at investigating the vocabulary size of International Relations students of Social and Political Science Faculty at University of Riau. The subjects of this study were the sixth-semester students majoring in International Relations of Social and Political Science Faculty at University of Riau. 96 students employed in this study were given the Vocabulary Size Test created by Nation I. S. P. and Beglar D. in 2007. The findings of this study revealed that the student knew about 7,400 word families. This result showed that the participants had good vocabulary mastery. Based on Nation (2006) the mean score of students of International Relations of Social and Political Science Faculty at University of Riau in sixth semester were able to read authentic materials which contains many vocabularies.Key Words: Vocabulary, Vocabulary Size Test, International Relations

Abstract

Abstract: This research belongs to descriptive research which used quantitative approach. It aimed to find out the level of grammar knowledge of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the second year students of the school, while the number of populations was 265 students. Thirty one of them were the samples and selecting by cluster sampling technique. To collect the data, completion test was used as the instrument with the total number of items was fourty questions. It consist of verb to be, modal, singular and plural, demonstrative adjective, degree of comparison and simple present tense. The result of research shows that the mean score of students in grammar knowledge was 70.26 and it categorized into good level, and the most difficult component is degree of comparison with the mean score 65, and the easiest aspects is in term of verb to be with the mean score 77. In brief, the second year students have good ability in grammatical knowledge that has been learned in odd semester.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Grammar, Knowledge

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out what culture and how culture were implemented in English textbooks for third grade students of Junior High School. The data of this research were the English textbooks entittled Bahasa Inggris Think Globally Act Locally revised 2018, English in Focus for grade IX Junior High School and Bright an English Course for Junior High School revised edition. The sample in this research was word, pictures,illustrations, reading passages and other many activities in each textbooks. The data were collected by using a checklist format based on the framework from Cortazzi and Jin (1999). There are two aspects have been analyzed: Big C and little C. The findings of the research revealed that Source Culture was the most appeared in these three English textbooks as categories of culture, and Product was the most frequently appeared in these three English textbooks. As the result of research, it found that the textbook is more likely to promote our local culture ( Source culture) in learning English and make into product of culture rather than any aspect of categories of culture and elements of culture..Keywords: English Textbook, Junior High School, Cognitive, Psychomotor.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to identify both types of grammatical errors and dominant errors made by the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau in writing recount texts. The population as well as the sample (Total Sampling) of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau. The research findings revealed that all types of grammatical errors and error of formation was the most dominant with 195 errors (54.92%); then, followed by error of omission with 93 errors (26.20%), and error of addition and ordering were below 10%. Error of addition with 34 errors (9.60%) and error of ordering with 33 errors (9.30%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the second grade students of SMAN 6 Kundur Kabupaten Karimun Kepulauan Riau committed the errors because of the influence of their mother tongue, the way of thinking, and generalization of the rule of the target language.Keywords: Error Analysis, Omission, Addition, Formation, ordering.

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research was to find out the reading comprehension ability on report texts of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. This is a descriptive research with only one variable. The data were collected from April to August 2018 by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice . The population of this research is the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The sample was XI TKJ 2 (36 students) chosen by using cluster random sampling techniques. The findings of the research are as the following: finding main ideas (73.3), finding factual information (78.9), finding the meaning of vocabulary in context (82.2), finding reference (78.3), finding inference (78.9) and finding social function (80.6). As a conclusion, the highest score was in finding the meaning of vocabulary in context (82.2) which categorized into excellent level while the lowest score was in finding main ideas (73.3) which categorized into good level. Therefore, the writer recommended the students to improve their reading skills in order to get deep understanding of report texts and could reach excellent level.Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Ability, Report Text
