Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the ability of the students in writing procedure texts made by the third year students of SMP Negeri 2 Kubu Babussalam. This is quantitative descriptive research. The populations of this research were the third year students of SMP Negeri 2 Kubu Babussalam. The sample of this research was 25 students of 9.1 classes who have been selected using cluster-sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test. The data were analyzed by applying the rules of Brown (2007) through three raters. The findings of this study revealed that the students ability of the third year students of SMPN 2 Kubu Babussalam in writing procedure texts in the 2020/2021 academic year is in good level. The students’ mean score in writing a procedure text is 69.1. To be more specific, 5 students are categorized as excellent, 17 students are categorized as good, 3 students are categorized as mediocre, and there are no students categorized as poor. Based on the findings, there are have recommendations given to the students to improve their ability in writing; to pay attention to vocabulary and grammar, so the students should doing more writing activity especially in writing procedure text and learn more also understand about grammar used.Key Words: Ability, Writing, Procedure Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the writing process which makes the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau feel anxious in writing essays. This is a descriptive quantitative research conducted by survey design. The population of this research was 107 of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau and all of it was appointed as the sample. The data were collected through a questionnaire containing 24 close-ended statements. The questionnaire was adaptred from Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) designed by Cheng (2004) and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) designed by Rezaei and Jafari (2014). The result of data analysis showed that the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau felt anxious in drafting process of essay writing. The factors that contributed to that were: linguistic problems (18.02%), time pressure (17.75%), lack of topical knowledge (16.80%), and lack of vocabulary mastery (16.66%). Furthermore, it is recommended that students need to find out the factors that contribute to their writing anxiety and try to find the best way to cope with their anxiety. Students also need to do more practice in English essays writing and discuss their problems in writing with the lecturer. In line with that, the lecturer should create a comfortable situations in Writing class to make the students more relaxed in expressing ideas through writing and the lecturer also need to pay more attention in students’ problems of writing essays that can lead them to anxiety.Key Words: Writing, Anxiety, Writing Anxiety, Writing Essays

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research is aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Kuras in reading descriptive texts. The research data were collected in July 2018. The sample of this research is class VIII H which consists of 33 students. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice types. The test contains 25 items. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that the highest score obtained by the students was in comprehending main ideas with the mean score of 79,39 which is categorized into good level. The lowest score was in comprehending factual information with the mean score of 72,72 which is categorized into good level. As a conclusion the ability of the second year students in reading descriptive texts was in good level with the mean score of 75,51.Keywords: The Ability, Reading Ability, Descriptive Texts

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research was to find out whether there is a significant effect of concept mapping on the students’ ability of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing descriptive texts. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group was selected to be a sample by using cluster random sampling. There were 36 students as the sample. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre-test and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses, t-test formula was used. After analyzing the data, it was found that t-test score was 7.779 while t-table score in significance level 5% df= 34 was 2.032. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be further understood that “there is a significant effect of concept mapping on the students’ ability of SMPN 14 Pekanbaru in writing descriptive texts”. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that concept mapping can help the students to improve their writing ability especially in writing descriptive text.Key Words: Effect, Concept Mapping, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to find out the ability level of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Lesung in writing descriptive texts. The population of this research are the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Lesung. The number of sample is 46 students who are chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data are collected using a writing test which contains one topic about “my favorite place”.The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the students’ ability in writing descriptive text is 61.68. It can be stated that the ability of the first year students of SMAN 1 Pangkalan Lesung in writing descriptive texts is good. Based on the result of the students’ ability in each writing aspect, the lowest score is in organization aspect and the highest score is in vocabulary aspect.Keywords: Study, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the types of grammatical errors in writing descriptive text made by the first year students of SMP Islam As-Shofa Pekanbaru. This is quantitative descriptive research. The population of this research were the first year students of SMP Islam As-Shofa Pekanbaru. The sample of this research was 25 students of 7.5 class who have been selected using cluster-sampling technique. The data were collected by using writing test 1 and writing test 2. The data were analyzed by applying the rules of Corder (1974) through three raters. The findings of this study revealed that the students made 190 grammatical errors from the total frequency of writing test 1 and writing test 2. Those grammatical errors were classified into four types which belong to Surface Strategy Taxonomy, they are omission (28%), addition (13%), misformation (48%), and misordering (11%). The cause of errors are the presence of intralingual transfer and interlingual transfer. Based on the findings, there were several recommendations given to the students to minimize the errors that will occur such as improve their skills in writing English with do more practice to write a text and understand to the grammar used.Key Words: Error, Writing, Desciptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to develop and to find out the validity level of English instructional tools (lesson plan and students’ worksheet) by using Picture series as one of learning media which is done through some steps: BKOF (Building Knowledge of Field), MOT (Modeling of the Text), JCOT (Joint Construction of Text), ICOT (Independent Construction of Text) suggested in the 2013 Curriculum. The research design is developmental research design applied which 4D model by Thiagarajan (1974). To develop English instructional tool, there were three stages involved in this research, (a) defining stage which is done to set and define the product development requirements, (b) designing stage which is done to plan the draft of instructional tool and arranged it into the right format and (c) developing stage which is done to modify and validate the instructional tool. In order to find out the validity level of developing English instructional tools, the data were collected by using validation sheet of lesson plan and students’ worksheet that validated by experts. Based on data analysis, the validation score of lesson plan is 91,61% and the validation score of students’ worksheet is 92,01%. Those results showed that the instructional tools as a media in the form of lesson plan and students’ worksheet were very valid. Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out whether there was a significant effect of using realia in teaching writing descriptive text on the writing ability of the second year students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test) which contained writing activities in describing objects. The population of this research was the Second Year Students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi. The sample of the research was the class VIII.4 which contains 29 students. The needed data were collected by giving test about writing descriptive text (pre-test and post-test) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed that the mean score of pretest is 29.88, and the mean score of posttest is 63.74 and the difference between the two mean score is 33.85. Besides that, t-test of this research is 25.758 and t-table of this research is 2.048. It means that the t-test score is higher than t-table (25.758>2.048). It can be concluded that there is significant effect of using realia (real objects) in teaching writing descriptive text on the writing ability of the second year students of SMPN 2 Tebing Tinggi. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted. Thus, the use of real objects can be used as media in teaching writing descriptive texts.Key Words: Real Objects, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to determine the effect of Team Word Webbing strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 1 Tunas Bangsa Pulau Burung in comprehending descriptive text. This pre-experimental research used the design of one group pretest-posttest and was carried out at SMAN 1 Tunas Bangsa in Pulau Burung. A total of 32 students from class X MIPA 1 were selected as samples, they were selected by using the cluster random sampling. The Sample class was treated using the Team Word Webbing strategy. The instrument used was a multiple choices that consisted of 40 questions. Then, the data obtained from the pre-test and post-test were analyzed by SPSS version 22.0. The results show that the value of the pre-test is 38 and increased in the post-test to 60. Then the T-test was tested and obtained T-test > T-table (12,351 > 2,04) with a significant level of 5% which means there is a significant effect of the Team Word Webbing strategy on the ability of the first year students of SMAN 1 Tunas Bangsa Pulau Burung in comprehending descriptive text.Key Words: Reading, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text, Team Word Webbing Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to investigate the ability of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text. The problem discussed in this study is : How good is the level of the tenth grade students ability in writing recount text? The methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative research. The data of the study are recount texts made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah. In this study, the instrument used in this research was a written test in the form of a report of science experiment. There are 7 classes for population of this research consists of 174 students. Since the material which investigated was a report of science experiment, so the writer took 69 students (X IPA 1, X IPA 2, X IPA 3) as the sample of the research selected by purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected by conducting a written test. The writer asked the students to write the scientific report based on the experiment that they have done. It might be chemistry, biology, or physics experiment. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of students’ ability in writing recount text was 70.71. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the ability of tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text is in good level based on Brown’s analytical scale for rating composition tasks. In relation with the result of the study, it can be suggested (1) for the students, they need more practice in writing and should pay attention to grammar and mechanics aspects, since the score of these writing aspects were low, (2) it is better to English teachers to apply appropriate methods and techniques in teaching recount text in class to the students so that they are able to write recount text well, and (2) for the next researchers, it is hoped that this research can be a source of literature review to conduct similar researches.Keywords: Writing, Ability, Students’ Writing Ability, Recount Text
