Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed to find out the ability of the students in comprehending descriptive text, recount text, and narrative text in reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMP Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru. The try-out class was 8.3 with the number of total 35 students. The sample class was 8.1 with the number of total 32 students. The try-out class and the sample class were chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second grade students of SMP Tri Bhakti Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive text, recount text, and narrative text was fall into good level with the mean score of 61. The students’ highest score was in finding factual information with the mean score of 72.9. On the other hand the lowest score that students got was finding meaning of vocabulary with the mean score of 49. Meanwhile, the other aspects were such as finding main idea with the mean score of 61, finding the reference with the mean score 67.7, finding the inference with the mean score that is 55.2, finding generic structure with the mean score of 63, finding language feature with the mean score of 58.8, and finding the social function with the mean score of 59.3.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Descriptive Text, Recount Text, Narrative Text.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant effect of Jigsaw technique on the ability of the second year students of MTs Kota Intan in comprehending descriptive texts. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test, treatment and post-test design. There are two classes in the first year. Class VIII A in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 that consist of 25 students are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choices which consist of 25 items about descriptive texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using Microsoft excel 2010 and SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 59.36 and the mean score of the post-test is 70.40. It means that the value of t-test (7.440) is higher than t-table (2.064) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) of this research is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Jigsaw technique on the second year students of MTs Kota Intan in comprehending descriptive texts. The implication of this finding is to be beneficial for the teacher in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Keywords: Effect, Jigsaw Technique, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at improving students’reading comprehension and identifying the factors that influence changing of students’s reading comprehension with applying KWL technique at grade nine of SMP N 30 Pekanbaru. Using random cluster sampling, 30 students employed in this study were taken as the sample of this research. This study employed mixed method, combining quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The quantitative data were collected from a questionnaire while the qualitative ones were obtained through observation, interview, and field note. The questionnaire consists of five reading indicators; factual information, main idea, supporting idea, reference, and guessing the meaning). The findings of this study revealed that the improvement of students’ reading comprehension in every indicator. This result showed that the improvement of students’ reading comprehension happened because using KWL chart, giving reward to students, and familiar text. The strengths of using KWL technique are; most students were interested, active, and worked independently in doing exercise and test by using KWL technique. In addition, some students also confused in arranging the question and students who could not find their answer within the given time would be disappointed.Key Words: Reading Comprehension, KWL Technique, Students’ Improvement, Pekanbaru

Abstract

Abstract: The Purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMP Muhajirin Sei Galuh un writing recount text. In this research, the data was obtained from students’ writing scores. The test is in this form of a paragraph because the test required the respondents to write a paragraph in the form of written recount text. There are five components of writing: grammar, organization, vocabulary, content, and mechanic (Jacob:1981). The writer analyzed the ability of the second year students based on five category: Excellent, good, mediocre, poor and very poor. The participants in this study are 30 students from VIII A of SMP Muhajirin Sei Galuh. The result of this study described that a number of students faced a problem in grammar.Content is the highet average score. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the ability of the second year students of SMP Muhajirin Sei Galuh is in Mediocre level. Although the students still faced some difficulties in writing recount test.Key words: Writing ability, recount text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out the significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy to the eleventh grade studens’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. More than 50% students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru often face some problems in comprehending the text caused by some factors such as: lack of background knowledge, lack of vocabulary, the technique in teaching reading comprehension, and students’ background knowledge which has not been activated. To overcome the problems, the writer used Anticipation Guide Strategy in teaching and learning process. The population was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru, while the sample class was XI IPS 2. The writer used cluster sampling technique to decide the sample and the instrument of this research was test in the form of multiple choice. The test included five aspects of reading comprehension which are; main idea, inference, reference, factual information, and vocabulary, and three aspects of narrative text which are; generic structure, purpose, and language features. The students’ reading comprehension scores were analyzed using t-test formula. The writer used the level of significance at 0.05 (5%). After being calculated, the value of t-observed was 6.549, whereas the value of t-table on the df (degree of freedom) 33 was 2.021. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis that there is a significant effect of Anticipation Guide Strategy on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru was accepted and its null hypothesis was rejected. In conclusion, using Anticipation Guide Strategy has a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru.Keywords: Anticipation Guide Strategy, Reading Comprehension2

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of chain story on the ability of the second year students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru in writing narrative text. This research was conducted by using one-group pre-test post-test design. Class XI IPA 5 was chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling. A paired samples t-test was conducted to compare the students’ writing score before and after the treatment and to analyze the hypotheses. The result showed that the t-test score was 17.148 while t-table score in significance level 5%, df= 34 was 2.032. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be further understood that chain story has a significant effect on the ability of the second year students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts. Based on the research findings, it is suggested that chain story can be used by teachers in teaching writing narrative text.Key Words: Effect, Chain Story, Writing, Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: The goal of this study is to identify the students' perceptions in using theWhatsApp application as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning. To collect the data,this survey research used an online survey, then analyzed descriptively. Thequestionnaire in the survey used Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with threeindicators to measure the students' perceptions. The survey was distributed to studentsfrom class C of batch 2019 of the English Study Program of Universitas Riau by usingcluster random sampling. 41 respondents answered the survey using Google Forms.The results were Perceived usefulness (70,97%) is in the very good category, PerceivedEase of Use (87,85%) is in the excellent category, and Behavioral Intention (78,28%) isin the very good. The result shows that the level of the students' perceptions in usingWhatsApp as a Mobile-Assisted Language Learning, in general, is Very Good(79,03%). Perceived Ease of Use was the indicator with the highest percentage(87,85%) which explains that students use WhatsApp easily. This research suggests thelecturer use WhatsApp as an application in the Mobile-Assisted Language Learning(MALL) tool.Key Words: Perception, WhatsApp, Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL).

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of One Stay Three Stray method on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Kuras in comprehending recount text. The research design was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was selected by cluster random sampling. The mean score of post-test (76.30) was higher than mean score of the pre-test (53.50).Therefore, alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of Numbered Head Together technique on the first year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMAN 2 Tambang. The research design was one group pre-test post-test design. The population was the first year students in academic year 2019/2020. The selected sample was X Bahasa students which consisted of 35 students. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The tests consisted of 40 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (80.5>65.6). The value of t-test was higher than t-table (13.616>2.06) at 5% of significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Numbered Head Together Technique was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative text. There is a significant effect of Numbered Head Together technique on the first year students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts at SMAN 2 Tambang. There are some suggestions that can be given in relation to the writer’s conclusion. One of them is Number Head together can be alternative strategy in teaching English. Abstract

Abstract: In this modern era, technology has the potential to make life easier and more efficient, especially in education. Where technology is able to solve learning problems. Teachers are encouraged to use technology as a tool or medium to boost student excitement for learning English, especially vocabulary, because there are so many students who are not interested in studying. The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether the Duolingo app affects students' vocabulary mastery. This research was carried out using a quasi-experimental design. There were 68 students in the sample for this study. 34 students made up class XI IPA 4 (the experiment class), and 34 students made up class XI IPA 3 (the control class). This study was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Tapung Hulu. The post-test was administered following the use of the treatment for 4 meetings while utilizing the Duolingo app as a supplemental tool for learning English. The data was examined using the t-test. The t-count value was 12.57 and the t-table value was 1.99 according to the study's findings. This demonstrates the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that the Duolingo application has a significant impact on the vocabulary mastery of SMA Negeri 1 Tapung Hulu students in the 11th grade.Key Words: Vocabulary Mastery, Duolingo Application, Senior High School Students.
