Abstract

A group of farmers in Sawah Baru Village work at the Kampar Gurami fish hatchery. The Pulai Jaya farmer group used natural techniques for gouramy spawning in the hatchery activities. Due to insufficient spawning eggs and intermittent seed production, this group has a challenge that results in very little revenue from its operations. The following goals of community service projects are : 1) Transfer technology for semi-natural gourami spawning to a farmer group in Pulai Jaya so they can produce more kampar gourami seeds. 2) Raise the revenue of the Pulai Jaya Farmers chairman and members and generate jobs, 3) In Sawah Baru Village, information agents and skills about the hatchery technology for semi-natural Kampar Gourami are being developed in order to be shared with other villages. The chairman and members of the Pulai Jaya farmer group have been motivated once again to carry out seeding activities as a result of this activity, according to the findings of observations made of them. They can also effectively absorb and put to use the provided information.

Abstract

Asian redtail catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) is one of the freshwater fish commodities with high economic value and already cultivated in Riau Province. Food that is given does not fully all the nutrition needed for larvae growth. One way to improve the feed quality is to enrich it with fish oil. This study aimed to determine the best oil sources in feed on the growth and survival rate of larvae. This research was conducted from August to September 2023 at the Fish Hatchery and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, University of Riau. This study used the experimental method of Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replicates. The treatments used were P1 (commercial feed,) P2 (shark oil 8%), P3 (pangasius catfish 8%), P4 (squid oil 8%), and P5(cod liver oil 8%). Larvae were reared for 40 days with a stocking density of 5 individuals/L. The result of the research showed that enrichment feed with different oil sources had a significant effect (P<0,05) on the growth of absolute weight, absolute length, specific growth rate, and survival rate. Enrichment of feed with squid oil results the higher growth than the other treatments with absolute weight of 0,71 g, absolute length of 3,06 cm, specific growth rate of 14,03%/day, and survival rate of 68,00%. Larvae’s response to feeding was very aggressive and nothing was left. Water quality parameters during the study were still in the good category for Asian redtail catfish with temperatures 28,7-30,1°C, pH 6,5-6,8 and dissolved oxygen 4,0-5,3 mg/l. Abstract

The growth and survival rate of the Asian redtail catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) during larval stage are inconsistent due to low quality of available diets. One of the options to improve the larval diets is through enriching fermented fish with fish-derived oils. This study aimed to determine the optimal combination of pangasius waste oil and squid oil in fermented feed to improve larval growth performance and survival. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and three replications was applied: P1 (Tubifex sp.), P2 (fermented feed + 12% pangasius waste oil), P3 (fermented feed + 12% squid oil), P4 (Fermented feed + pangasius waste oil + squid oil at a ratio of 1:1 [10 g pangasius waste oil + 10 g squid oil] with a dosage of 12%), P5 (Fermented feed + pangasius waste oil + squid oil at a ratio of 1:2 [10 g pangasius waste oil + 20 g squid oil] with a dosage of 12%), and P6 (Fermented feed + pangasius waste oil + squid oil at a ratio of 1:3 [10 g pangasius waste oil + 30 g squid oil] with a dosage of 12%). Larvae were reared for 40 days at a stocking density of 5 individuals L-1. Results demonstrated that feed enrichment significantly affected (p<0.05) absolute weight, absolute length, specific growth rate (SGR), and survival rate. The best performance was obtained with the 1:3 combination, yielding an absolute weight of 0.80 g, an absolute length of 3.45 cm, an SGR of 14.07%/day, and a survival rate of 75.11%. Larvae exhibited active feeding behavior with minimal feed residues.

Abstract

Striped catfish hatchery production of the Pustina strain (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) is highly dependent on the availability of high-quality seed, particularly during the larval stage, which is characterized by relatively high mortality and cannibalism rates. One of the key factors determining success at this stage is feed quality. Striped catfish larvae are commonly fed natural diets such as Artemia sp. and tubifex worms, followed by commercial feed (PF-0). However, this feeding strategy has not yet fully optimized larval growth and survival. Therefore, feed innovation through fermentation and the addition of natural feed additives is required to improve larval performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn.) powder supplementation in fermented paste feed on growth, survival rate, and cannibalism level of striped catfish larvae. The experiment was conducted for 40 days at the Fish Hatchery and Breeding Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Universitas Riau, using a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications, namely P1 (0.0 g kg−1), P2 (1.5 g kg−1), P3 (3.0 g kg−1), P4 (4.5 g kg−1), and P5 (6.0 g kg−1) turmeric powder supplementation in the feed. The results showed that turmeric powder supplementation had a significant effect (p<0.05) on absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate of striped catfish larvae. The best performance was obtained in treatment P5, with an absolute weight gain of 1.53 g, an absolute length gain of 6.06 cm, a specific growth rate of 15.91% day−1, and a survival rate of 86.22%. Compared with the control treatment (P1), P5 increased weight by 25.24%, length by 34.82%, specific growth rate by 3.66%, and survival rate by 10.23%. During the experimental period, water quality parameters remained within optimal ranges, with temperatures of 26.6–28.6°C, dissolved oxygen levels of 5.7–6.8 mg L−1, and pH values of 6.5–7.1. Turmeric powder has the potential to be used as a feed additive that is easy to apply and can support the sustainable improvement of Pustina strain striped catfish  fingerling production.

Abstract

The growth of gurami fish larvae (Osphronemus gouramy Lac.) is often hindered by a limited supply of natural feed such as silkworms. Fermented paste feed supplemented with moringa leaf meal (Moringa oleifera) is expected to serve as an alternative feed that can reduce dependence on silkworms. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of fermented paste feed supplemented with moringa leaf meal (MLM) on the growth and survival of gurami fish larvae. The study was conducted over 40 days using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of six treatments with three replicates: P1 (0 g/kg MLF), P2 (20 g/kg MLF), P3 (40 g/kg MLF), P4 (60 g/kg MLF), P5 (80 g/kg MLF), and P6 (Tubifex sp.). The results showed that the addition of moringa leaf flour had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on absolute weight gain, absolute length gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate of gurami fish larvae. The best results were obtained in treatment P4 (60 g/kg TDK), with an absolute weight gain of 0.37 g, an absolute length gain of 1.58 cm, a specific growth rate of 8.36%/day, and a survival rate of 88.87%. Water quality parameters during the study remained within the optimal range, with temperatures ranging from 26.1–27.9 °C, a pH of 6.6–7.1, and dissolved oxygen levels of 5.2–6.6 mg/L.
