Abstract

Linguistic features of tourism brochures can describe the distinctive ways of expressing persuasiveness in advertising which have a significant impact on teaching English as a foreign or second language. This study determined how linguistic features and functions characterize the advertising stance of the Philippines’ and Thailand’s tourism brochures. It sought to explore the fundamental contributions of linguistic forms and structures in these tourism brochures to facilitate persuasiveness. A collection of tourism brochures were randomly acquired online and coded for qualitative and quantitative analyses. However, only the verbal expressions were analyzed, disregarding other components of the brochures such as semiotics. The results show that the Philippines’ and Thailand’s brochures used rhyme in their lines minimally. Most of their lines were simple narratives and descriptive statements. There were instances of neologism but no anagrammatical structure. Structural parallelism in both brochures is evident. Thailand’s brochures used minor sentences more often than the Philippines’ brochures.  Both showed a degree of informal styles. These informal styles suggested an easy-going social relationship between the audience and the advertisers. Based on the single verbs used, the Philippines’ tourism brochures capitalized on what the senses can experience and the enjoyment and satisfaction derived from such while Thailand’s tourism advertising brochures focused more on movement, both spatial and temporal. In terms of memorability, Thailand’s samples have very limited use of alliteration and metrical rhythm, while the Philippines’ samples were poetic and were fond of using alliteration.

The research was qualitative with a case study approach. The sites for this study were two national senior high schools in Jambi Province, Indonesia. Eight teachers of English were involved as the research participants to provide a broad perspective of implementation of classroom management. The researchers used four techniques for collecting data: interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and document review. To assess the trustworthiness of the research, the researchers did triangulation, member checking and reflexivity. The findings, describing the implementation, processes and problems of classroom management, are divided into three themes: (i) teaching standards, rules and procedures, (ii) classroom climate, and (iii) timing and scheduling. Policy recommendation proposed such as to limit the number of students (in a class), to provide up-to-date technology and to provide more training for teachers are not only for teachers but also for school authorities, and other stake holders for the betterment of Indonesian education.

Abstract

Starting to write is often the most challenging stage for students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Few studies, however, have examined how students initiate writing rather than focusing on the final product, leaving a gap in understanding the emotional and cognitive processes involved in writing initiation. This study addresses this gap by exploring how Photovoice supports students in beginning ESP writing. A qualitative case study was conducted with 15 undergraduate students from a Management Study Program at a private Islamic university in South Sumatra. Data were collected from students’ written texts, reflective responses, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed thematically. The findings indicate that Photovoice provides a concrete starting point for writing, helping students generate ideas from familiar daily-life contexts and reducing hesitation when facing a blank page. Participants reported feeling more emotionally prepared and confident, and Photovoice also facilitated early draft organization, allowing a natural progression from description to reflection and connections with management-related topics. The study contributes to ESP writing pedagogy by demonstrating that multimodal, experience-based approaches like Photovoice can enhance students’ engagement and support the initiation phase of writing in EFL higher education contexts.

Abstract

Financial Technology (FinTech) has significantly changed the landscape of Indonesia’s digital economy. On the other hand, the increasing non-domestic population in Indonesia, especially the student age group, also reflects the broadening demographic dynamics. This group plays a crucial role as a consumer in national economic growth. Despite the increasing growth of the national digital economy, the non-domestic population, especially the student age group, is doubtful about the acceptance of using FinTech. This paper investigated non-domestic students’ intention to use FinTech in Indonesia. The authors employed mixed methodology with an explanatory sequential design. Thus, this paper explored this narrative based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and external factors such as Performance Expectancy (PE) and Social Influence (SI). Using the partial least squares (PLS) approach, data from the 75 non-domestic students in Indonesia were analyzed. In addition, this paper also utilized in-depth interviews to gather further information from participants. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews was conducted to explore the non-domestic students’ experience of using Indonesian FinTech.

Abstract

A pronunciation-learning attitude is essential to help students improve their pronunciation proficiency. It is problematic when students do not care about learning proper pronunciation in the process of teaching and learning. Several studies have investigated EFL students perceptions toward attitudes of pronunciation learning. However, little research focused on the role of gender on students attitudes in this context. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate students attitudes toward English pronunciation learning related to gender. An explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, integrating questionnaires of Gardner 1985s Attitude Motivation of Test Battery (AMTB) and Elliot 1995s Pronunciation Attitude Inventory (PAI) and interviews, was employed in this study. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were used to analyse quantitative data gathered from 151 students. For qualitative data, the semi-structured interview transcripts of eighteen participants were analysed using thematic analysis. The questionnaires reveal that the students had positive pronunciation learning attitudes, and no significant differences were found between females and males. Moreover, based on the results of the interviews, the students believed that proper pronunciation learning is important to make the message understood. Reflecting on the study results, it is hoped that English lecturers select more practical pronunciation teaching media that can make students more involved in the teaching and learning process and contribute to English pedagogy about the importance of improving learners positive attitude in pronunciation learning.

Abstract

The This study aims to reconceptualize the validity of cross-paradigm research through a critical examination of the evolution of the meaning and function of reliability, credibility, and trustworthiness in the methodological literature. This study departs from the problem of conceptual fragmentation and epistemological tension that arise due to the application of validity criteria ahistorically and procedurally in various research paradigms. The method used is a non-systematic literature review of conceptually relevant Scopus indexed journal articles, with a thematic-conceptual analysis approach and cross-paradigm critical synthesis. The results of the study show that validity has shifted from technical-instrumental attributes to epistemic justification processes that are contextual, reflective, and paradigmatic. Reliability no longer serves as a universal prerequisite for validity, but rather as a technical mechanism whose relevance depends on certain epistemological assumptions. Credibility develops as an interpretive justification mechanism in qualitative research, while trustworthiness serves as a reflective evaluative framework that emphasizes transparency and accountability. This study also found epistemological tensions, conceptual inconsistencies, and theoretical limitations in the use of these three concepts across paradigms. In conclusion, the validity of research needs to be understood as a dynamic practice of epistemic justification and not reduced to a methodological checklist. This research contributes to the development of research methodology by offering a conceptual synthesis that goes beyond the classical dichotomy of validity–reliability and trustworthiness–credibility.
