Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Guessing Game method in improving descriptive text writing among seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Beji. A quasi-experimental design was employed, utilizing pre-test and post-test measures in both an experimental class (7H) and a control class (7i), each consisting of 34 students. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Guessing Game method significantly enhanced students' descriptive text writing skills, as demonstrated by a t-test value of 0.003, which was below the significance level of 0.05 (0.003 < 0.05). This suggests that the Guessing Game method is an effective instructional approach for teaching descriptive text writing to seventh-grade students. The advantages of using this method include its simplicity, requiring minimal steps in writing, and its facilitation of students' ability to draw upon their prior gameplay experiences. This research provides implications for educators to employ interactive and engaging approaches, such as the Guessing Game, to foster students' writing abilities effectively. Highlights: The Guessing Game method significantly improves seventh-grade students' descriptive text writing skills. The method simplifies the writing process and incorporates students' prior gameplay experiences. Interactive and engaging approaches, like the Guessing Game, enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in writing. Keywords: Guessing Game method, descriptive text writing, seventh-grade students, quasi-experimental design, writing instruction.

Abstract

During the current pandemic, some schools have to implement hybrid learning, where some students come to school, and some have to go online. After the teacher gave the learning materials, some students who took online classes still did not understand it was different from students who took offline classes. The research used the qualitative method. The data was collected from 33 students in the 7b class and ten selected students based on their descriptive English writing text. It is revealed that the students have achieved reasonable control in writing descriptive text. However, in terms of writing, some students make spelling mistakes, and the use of tenses still needs more understanding. The result showed that the difficulties of descriptive writing are spelling, tenses, punctuation, sentence pattern, pronoun, conjunction, and preposition. They must consider schematic structures and use the appropriate language. Thus, their text will be well-organized and understandable.

Abstract

Speech acts determine classroom interaction. Speech acts consist of all verbal utterances used in classroom communication. This study identified and described the forms of speech acts based on Searle’s illocutionary act theory produced by the teacher to the seventh grader of the International class program at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sidoarjo. The primary focus was on the utterances of the English as a second language teacher. In this study, researchers employed a descriptive qualitative method. Observations and recordings were used to acquire the data. The obtained data were then transcribed and analyzed using NVivo 12 Pro. The teacher produces two hundred and sixty-six utterances and four kinds of Searle’s illocutionary acts in the English as a second language classroom. Sixty-eight of their statements were representative, one hundred fifty-one were directive, five were commissive, and forty-two were expressive. The teacher’s frequent use of instructions suggests that she was conscious of her position as a more powerful individual than her students and efficiently managed and commanded the classroom.

Abstract

The pervasive use of English has a significant effect on language development. It has demonstrated that English is crucial in many facets of contemporary life, including commerce, the economy, politics, and tourism, notably in education. Code-switching is a teaching method that provides explanations and tools for students with limited English skills. The short duration of the English specialization class encourages the teacher to code-switch so that students can receive and understand the material well. This study aims to analyze the types and reasons for code-switching used by teachers in teaching English as a foreign language in Islamic boarding schools. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were teachers who taught English specialization classes at one of the boarding schools in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. Data collection was carried out through observation and interview techniques. Research data were analyzed using analytical methods. This study’s results indicate three types of data on the use of code-switching by teachers: tag-switching, intra-sentential switching, and between-sentence switching. The reasons teachers use it in the learning process in the classroom are four types: facilitating learning, getting good feedback from students, making the classroom atmosphere more interactive, and establishing good relationships with students. This research found that using code-switching to deliver learning can positively impact teachers and students in the classroom

Abstract

This current research intends to identify and explain the forms of speech acts produced by the teacher in a learning video published on a YouTube channel. This research applies a qualitative descriptive method to respond to the problems studied. The findings indicate that among the various speech acts used, directive speech acts are more produced by the teacher in the video. It can be concluded from the results that 26 utterances produced by the teacher (25.2%) belong to representative speech acts, 52 utterances (50.5%) to directive speech acts, 2 utterances (2%) to commissive speech acts, 23 utterances (22.3%) to expressive speech acts. Directives are mostly produced by teachers inside the classroom while asking and questioning and become the most dominant directive speech acts produced by the teacher. It may happen because, in the learning video, the teacher gives students the opportunity to study a problem and try to solve the problem independently.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine student responses to the use of the google classroom application in online learning of English subjects for class VIII-C SMPN 1 Prambon. Therefore, to support the smooth process of learning activities during the pandemic, teachers are emphasized to be more creative and innovative so that learning activities remain effective even though they are carried out online. As part of supporting the teaching and learning process, teachers use online learning application media. The online learning application media currently used by teachers at SMPN 1 Prambon is the Google Classroom application media. By using the google classroom application media, teachers can share materials and assignments for students while students can access materials and assignments that have been shared by the teacher and can be done in the application provided by the teacher. In this study used descriptive qualitative research methods by conducting direct interviews. The research location is at SMPN 1 Prambon. The results of student responses to the use of the Google Classroom application in online English learning have positive and negative responses. There are benefits that are felt by students, namely saving time, being easy and practical in carrying out learning process activities and being considered effective in the current pandemic conditions. In learning English, students are more interested in paying attention to the material provided in the form of learning videos. While for the negative response, learning English using the Google Classroom application is not fun and enough to make students feel bored because students often face obstacles, namely related to poor signal constraints and limited quotas, applications that sometimes have errors and must be updated, limited cellphone storage space makes students have difficulty in downloading the material provided, lack of communication between teachers and students.
