Abstract

This research discusses the community of women writers in Sidoarjo using a feminist sociological perspective. The purpose of this research is to formulate the pattern of relations of this community with the structure of the field of authorship using Bourdieu's perspective. The research method used is qualitative with descriptive patterns. Data were collected using a combination of interview and documentation techniques using library research procedures. The results showed that this community of women writers had an awareness of the existence of dominant-dominated binary opposition structures and included aspects of gender considerations in their authorship strategies, but they chose patterns as used in universalist feminism.

Abstract

In this study which aims to analyze P5 activities at SMP Negeri 1 Wonoayu with the theme of local wisdom, which includes the preparation stage which provides findings that the Junior High School provides training to all teachers every month to develop their abilities, so that teachers at this Junior High School can implement P5 well. At the implementation stage, P5 activities at this Junior High School are carried out every Tuesday with different themes. This research uses a qualitative method using descriptive research. In collecting data, the techniques used were interviews, field observations and documentation of activities. Interviews were conducted to find out more in-depth things about P5 activities that could not be found through observation. Documentation includes notes during research, other documents, and photos as documents that support evidence of research implementation and to complement research data. The subject of this research is science learning in the independent curriculum. In obtaining the data through several school parties, namely the lead teacher, facilitator teacher and P5 team, and several students involved in the implementation of P5 activities. The data analysis technique used is the Milles and Huberman model in (Rijali, 2018). This research applies differentiated learning to the independent curriculum in obtaining data from the deputy principal, academy, facilitator teachers, as well as the P5 team, and several students involved in implementing P5 activities in the independent curriculum. The results of this study have a stage where the first stage of P5 implementation is carried out in two weeks where students are given material and practice democracy in the classroom and school scope. At the evaluation stage, the principal and facilitator hold a meeting that discusses the obstacles faced and provides solutions or reflections for the day of the P5 meeting. The second stage is the implementation of differentiation that has been successfully carried out for P5 activities in the content differentiation strategy, the problem process and also produces a product. The third stage in P5 activities that have been carried out as a form of differentiated learning in the independent curriculum has a good impact on character building, especially on students in democracy that is close to students in accordance with the profile of Pancasila students.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' interest and motivation in reading in English language learning at Junior High School. A qualitative approach was used to gain an in-depth understanding of this interest and motivation in reading. Data was collected through classroom observations, interviews with English teachers, and interviews with students. The results showed that reading interest and motivation have a significant impact on students' English learning achievement. The findings provide an in-depth understanding of how a learning approach that focuses on increasing interest and motivation to read can improve English learning outcomes in junior secondary schools. The implication of this finding is the need to develop learning strategies that can encourage students' interest and motivation in reading, as well as increased cooperation between teachers, students, and educational stakeholders to create a supportive learning environment.

Abstract

Considering the importance of English as one of pivotal courses in compulsory education, Indonesian students are liable to error produced during their language acquisition phase. This paper’s aim is to unveil what is the most frequent language interference presents in students’ writing that centered upon grammatical context, along with its correlative factors and the very process of interference, encountered by senior high school learners within their second or foreign language acquisition phase. This was carried through library research, which relies towards other articles from researchers, under the same concerns of language interference, as the main objective. There are 4 researches taken as primary sources that issued or published within the last 5 years. The findings of each studies are assessed in gaining a better insight for this paper’s inquiries. From the analysis, the outcomes proved that the errors mostly occurred were caused by interference came in a form of incorrect use of verb as well as copula ‘be’ omission during sentence composing. Such errors were not solely caused by the entity of language interference alone, yet also compounded by the lack of motivation in using English as a communication medium both inside and outside the classroom activity.

Abstract

This study involves the issues of teaching writing in English skills in junior high school in the context of the digital world, highlighting the need to utilize technology-driven tools. Canva, an effective design tool, is included in the study as a possible alternative for improving students writing skills. The study aims at looking into the impact of utilizing Canva on students' writing skills and their assessment of the application's contribution to writing creativity. The report examines six connected research that illustrates Canva’s beneficial effects on several aspects of learning and teaching. A mixed-method approach is used in the methodology, employing a randomized pre-test-post-test control group design. Thirty-eight eighth-grade SMP Negeri 2 Sukodono students participated in the study. To examine Canva's effectiveness in developing writing skills, quantitative data obtained through pretest and posttests is analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Furthermore, data from a questionnaire are used to investigate students’ impressions of Canva’s usefulness, ease of use, and suitability for supporting writing abilities. The results show significant improvements in the experimental group, validating that Canva improves students’ writing skills positively. The results of the questionnaire show that students have a high level of acceptance and good impressions of Canvas's utility, ease of usage, and suitability for improving writing skills. The findings add to the expanding research proving Canva's effectiveness as an English language learning tool. The report encourages additional research to investigate Canva’s long-term impact in various learning contexts and deployment methodologies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine student responses to the use of the google classroom application in online learning of English subjects for class VIII-C SMPN 1 Prambon. Therefore, to support the smooth process of learning activities during the pandemic, teachers are emphasized to be more creative and innovative so that learning activities remain effective even though they are carried out online. As part of supporting the teaching and learning process, teachers use online learning application media. The online learning application media currently used by teachers at SMPN 1 Prambon is the Google Classroom application media. By using the google classroom application media, teachers can share materials and assignments for students while students can access materials and assignments that have been shared by the teacher and can be done in the application provided by the teacher. In this study used descriptive qualitative research methods by conducting direct interviews. The research location is at SMPN 1 Prambon. The results of student responses to the use of the Google Classroom application in online English learning have positive and negative responses. There are benefits that are felt by students, namely saving time, being easy and practical in carrying out learning process activities and being considered effective in the current pandemic conditions. In learning English, students are more interested in paying attention to the material provided in the form of learning videos. While for the negative response, learning English using the Google Classroom application is not fun and enough to make students feel bored because students often face obstacles, namely related to poor signal constraints and limited quotas, applications that sometimes have errors and must be updated, limited cellphone storage space makes students have difficulty in downloading the material provided, lack of communication between teachers and students.

Specific Background: While the use of these linguistic strategies is acknowledged in language teaching, there is limited research focusing specifically on their application by teachers during English language instruction. Knowledge Gap: Existing studies often overlook the practical implications of code switching and mixing in the classroom setting, particularly regarding teachers' motivations and the types employed. Aims: This study aims to analyze the implementation of code switching and code mixing by teachers in English learning environments and to understand the underlying reasons for their usage. Results: Employing a qualitative research method, data were collected through direct classroom observations and interviews with a teacher. The findings reveal that teachers utilized all recognized types of code switching and mixing, primarily to enhance student understanding of the material and to ensure the achievement of learning objectives. Novelty: This research contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence of the strategies employed by teachers in real classroom settings. Implications: The insights gained from this study underscore the significance of code switching and mixing as effective pedagogical tools, suggesting that educators can leverage these strategies to improve student comprehension and engagement in English language learning. Highlights: Comprehensive Use: Teachers employed all types of code switching and mixing as per theoretical frameworks. Enhancing Understanding: The primary motivation for using these strategies was to improve student comprehension of the material. Abstract

General Background: Speaking skills are essential for effective communication, particularly in the context of learning foreign languages such as English. Specific Background: Despite the importance of English proficiency for academic and global opportunities, many junior high school students struggle to master the language. Recent trends in social media, particularly TikTok, have emerged as potential tools for enhancing language learning engagement among youth. Knowledge Gap: While there is a growing body of research on the use of technology in education, limited studies have specifically focused on the application of TikTok to improve speaking skills in a structured learning environment. Aims: This study investigates the effectiveness of TikTok as a tool for improving English speaking skills among seventh-grade students in a junior high school. Results: Utilizing a pre-experimental case study design with 30 students, the study measured fluency, pronunciation, grammar, and comprehension through pre-tests and post-tests. The findings indicated a significant increase in average speaking scores from 58.67 to 68.67, demonstrating improvement after the TikTok-based intervention. Novelty: This research offers new insights into the innovative use of social media for language education. Implications: The results suggest that incorporating platforms like TikTok into English language instruction can create a more engaging and effective learning environment, fostering greater student interest and participation in language learning. Highlights: Improvement in Scores: Students' average speaking scores increased from 58.67 (pre-test) to 68.67 (post-test) after using TikTok. Abstract

General Background: Effective learning media are crucial for enhancing language acquisition among elementary school students. Specific Background: Traditional teaching methods may not adequately engage students, highlighting the need for innovative approaches that foster interactive learning environments. Knowledge Gap: There is a lack of research on the application of three-dimensional teaching tools, such as dioramas, in vocabulary acquisition for English language learners. Aims: This study aims to develop a diorama as an interactive medium to teach house-related vocabulary in English to elementary school students. Results: The diorama features a visually appealing three-dimensional design and incorporates vocabulary targets identified by numbered sections. It employs velcro or fabric adhesive to facilitate the removal and placement of vocabulary terms, allowing students to match words with corresponding parts of the diorama. Novelty: This approach combines tactile and visual learning strategies, enhancing students' engagement and motivation in learning English vocabulary. Implications: The implementation of the diorama as a learning tool can significantly improve students' understanding of vocabulary, making it easier for them to connect words with their meanings through interactive activities in reading and speaking exercises. This innovative resource offers educators a novel method to enhance language learning in a classroom setting.
