Abstract

This article seeks to understand the empowerment issues of persons with disabilities. Various development programs have been implemented to reduce stigma, prejudice and stereotypes that impede persons with disabilities from having greater access to education, employment or the labor markets and public services. However, research findings showed that many interventions and strategies to address disability issues focus more on individual or medical models. As a consequence, public stigma and social exclusion of persons with disabilities continue to occur, preventing them from participating in various activities in the society including in the tourism sector. The purpose of this study is to identify social reasons that lead to exclusion and lack of empowerment, as well as to establish programs at the community level to increase the engagements of persons with disabilities in tourist attractions and tourist destinations in Malang. The result of the study shows that the insufficient skills and knowledge of the community members of Desa Kalisanga (nicknamed Kampung Cempluk) in communicating and interacting with persons with disabilities cause the lack of awareness in regard to disability issues. Using macro perspective, this study exhibits community-based approach which requires participation of community members in the planning and organizing an inclusive arts and music festival in Kampung Cempluk. The community was successfully provided various accessibility facilities needed by persons with disabilities to participate, both attending and performing at the festival. This study shows that community-based approach could be employed as a model or strategy to empower persons with disabilities by providing them with equal opportunities to participate in tourist attractions or other activities in the society and wider access to tourist destinations and other public facilities.

Abstract

Abstract. This study wants to address how migrant workers and their choices to work abroad have impacted its family, especially for economy and infrastructure sector. This paper explains that community development tend to adopt two approaches: micro or macro perspective. Macro perspective focuses on the people or agencies only in terms of their relationship to the large-scale structure, whilst micro-perspective places a greater emphasis on the individual level as the main focus and objective in the development programs. The objective of this research is to seize the structural issues of the migrant workers, and therefore, social mapping method is used. Social mapping is a visual method of showing the relative location of households and the distribution of different types of people (such as male, female, adult, child, landed, landless, literate, illiterate, and so on) together with the social structure and institutions of an area. This research was conducted in Sukowilangun village, near Malang, East Java, as this regency is named one of the largest migrant workers origins. Keywords: Migrant Workers, Indonesia, Social Mapping, Community Development  Abstrak.

Abstract

This article seeks to understand the empowerment of women ex-migrant workers who have faced various problems before, during and after going back to the homeland as ex-migrant workers. These problems include unemployment, family’s affairs, exploitation, discrimination and domestic violence. Komunitas Perempuan Singkong Jaya has been established to carry out empowerment programs to overcome these problems. The purpose of this study is to identify the needs as well as the problems that hinder the implementation of the programs and seeks to find the solutions. This study employs descriptive qualitative approach to examine the implementation of the development programs which have been conducted by Komunitas Perempuan Singkong Jaya located in Desa Sukowilangun, Kec. Kalipare, Kab. Malang. Based on the findings, there are several problems in the implementation of development programs, including the lack of capital and facilities, packaging and marketing, as well as product license problems. Addressing these problems, some intervention programs have been conducted, including training and funding which have generated intended outputs. However, this study also found that the change in lifestyle of these women ex-migrant workers has resulted in their being reluctant to be involved in the development programs.

Abstract

Abstract

The need to build a safe and friendly environment has developed to respond to the increasing number of vulnerable issues which have been faced by children and women. Nevertheless, strategies to build a safe and friendly environment in rural areas are rarely discussed. This study outlined the macro perspective which considers structural and cultural change as a strategy to design a positive environment for women and children in the village. This perspective is adopted due to the fact that the places where women and children live, either in city or rural areas could become the factors causing women and children to live in a vulnerable environment. This design consists of two aspects which are the building of an institutional network and program recommendations. The implementation of an institutional network requires three principles or strategies which are participation, integration between women and children development programs, and involve various parties or community organizations including village government, professionals, scholars, as well as formal dan informal groups which are formed by rural community members, as facilitators and volunteers in the development programs. All these principles should be adopted to undertake program recommendations to meet the rights of children in health, education, legal advice, security, and peace.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between two variables: socioeconomic level and media literacy (variable X) and parental participation in stunting prevention (variable Y) in Indonesia. Socioeconomic level has long been considered the most dominant factor influencing the risk of stunting in children. This study introduces an additional variable, media literacy, hypothesizing that it may also impact parental participation in preventing stunting in children. The study employs a quantitative explanatory method using Kendall's rank correlation test. The population consists of parents with children under five years old. Sampling was conducted in two stages. First, the sample size was calculated based on the total population across eight Pre- and Postnatal Healthcare Information Centres (Posyandu) with a 5% margin of error. Second, the sample size obtained was distributed proportionally among each Posyandu using simple random sampling. The results show no significant relationship between socioeconomic level and parental participation in stunting prevention, with a significance level of 0.25. However, a relationship was found between media literacy and parental participation in stunting prevention, with a significance level of 0.023 and a very weak correlation coefficient of 0.109 (or 11%). This suggests that higher media literacy among parents has the potential to increase their participation in stunting prevention, albeit the relationship is very weak. This may be because parents do not directly use social media to obtain stunting information but rather for other purposes, such as entertainment or accessing nutritious recipes for children. Additionally, parents may receive stunting information from other sources, including stunting education provided by Posyandu cadres, village midwives, doctors, and nutrition consultants from local health centres.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the form or type of dilemma experienced by fresh rose farmers in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted in Gunungsari Village, Bumiaji Sub-District, Batu, the largest fresh flower cultivation center in East Java. This study used a qualitative research approach with a case study design to utilize James C. Scott’s theory of survival mechanisms in its analysis. The results showed that there were three types of dilemmas experienced by fresh flower farmers, namely (1) the dilemma of converting the type of work, (2) the dilemma of conversion of plant commodity types, and (3) the dilemma of the continuity of fresh flower farming. Although farmers essentially take action to minimize risk, as stated by Scott, there are differences in the causative factors because this study was conducted when a non-natural disaster of the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, which no one could predict when it would end. Keywords: dilemma, farmers, fresh flower farmers, survival mechanism, COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract

This study explores how farmers in Bulukerto Village, Batu City, rationally diversify their livelihoods amid an agricultural crisis and expanding tourism. It addresses three core questions; (1) how farmers respond to agrarian decline through diversification, (2) how unequal access, social capital, and agrarian identity influence their decisions, and (3) how theoretical synthesis explains this dynamic within structural constraints. The research combines James S. Coleman’s Rational Choice Theory, which highlights decisions based on material and non-material resources, cost-benefit logic, values, and social norms, with Henry Bernstein’s political economy approach, which emphasizes power structures, asset control, and class relations. To bridge these perspectives, the study also draws on the concepts of bounded rationality and embedded agency. A qualitative case study approach was used, focusing on farmers in Bulukerto Village, Bumiaji Subdistrict, Batu City. Data collection techniques included semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document review. Thematic analysis identifies three diversification types: (1) capital-based, involving formal tourism ventures by farmers with financial or institutional access; (2) labor-based, such as driving or guiding, pursued by low-capital farmers through informal networks; and (3) informal household-scale strategies led by women or youth, often using digital platforms. This study concludes that sustainable rural diversification requires equitable access to productive resources, digital upskilling, and inclusive tourism programs that preserve agrarian identity. It offers a multi-level analytical lens that integrates agency, social structure, and local context in understanding livelihood transitions in post-agrarian rural areas. Policy recommendations call for transparent resource allocation in tourism, empowering farmer cooperatives for fair benefit-sharing, and promoting agritourism that balances traditional land use with new income streams.

Abstract

The rapid conversion of agricultural land into tourism areas in Batu City has driven many farmers to shift into the tourism sector. However, some farmers rationally choose to remain in agriculture despite increasing pressures and attractions of tourism. This study examines the rationality behind farmers’ decisions to sustain farming and the strategies they adopt amid agrarian crisis and tourism expansion. Guided by James S. Coleman’s rational choice theory, the analysis emphasizes actors’ calculations of resources, risks, and values. A qualitative case study was conducted in Bulukerto Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City, using semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. The findings show that farmers’ persistence is shaped by the availability of land and agricultural resources, strong socio-cultural attachments, and careful assessments of tourism’s uncertainties, which are often unstable and capital-intensive. Rather than abandoning farming, they adapt by diversifying to more resilient or profitable commodities, including oranges, vegetables, cut flowers, and multi-purpose tree species. The study concludes that sustaining agriculture constitutes a rational choice grounded in economic stability, ecological sustainability, and cultural identity. The novelty of this research lies in showing how farmers’ rationality is formed not only by material resources but also by non-material values and perceived risks of tourism, offering new insights into agrarian transformation.

Abstract

This research discusses the role of families and nursing homes in improving the quality of life of the elderly. Social problems facing the elderly include the ability of families and nursing homes to meet their needs. The elderly are part of the demographic bonus challenge and need support for physical, economic, psychological and social well-being. Shifts in family functions have led to an increase in the number of elderly people in nursing homes. The International Convention on the Elderly emphasizes the importance of access to basic needs and employment opportunities, but Indonesia has not ratified this convention, even though there are local policies that recognize the elderly as a vulnerable group that must be empowered. This research uses a constructivist paradigm and qualitative methods with in-depth interviews and participant observation to collect data. The results show that the pattern of caring for elderly people in families and nursing homes is different, with nursing homes often being a place for elderly people who have been neglected by their families. Families have an important role in caring for and supporting elderly people, which can significantly influence their quality of life. Nursing homes also play a role in providing care and support, but face challenges such as limited resources and social stigma. This research highlights the importance of a holistic approach in elderly care, both in the context of families and nursing home institutions. Well-functioning families and well-managed nursing homes can improve the quality of life of seniors, by taking into account their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
