Abstract

Malaria remains a public health problem in Indonesia. Controlling malaria vectors (Anopheles sp.) using synthetic larvicides carries the risk of developing resistance and environmental pollution, requiring natural alternatives from Japanese papaya leaves (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius). This study aimed to analyze the effect of concentration and exposure time of n-hexane extract of Japanese papaya leaves on mortality of Anopheles sp. larvae and to determine LC50 and LT50 values. The experimental method used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six concentrations (0%; 0.5%; 0.75%; 1%; 1.25%; and 1.5%) and four replications, using 20 third instar larvae for each experimental unit. Mortality observations were conducted after 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours of exposure, while morphological changes were observed using a digital microscope. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, LSD, and probit analysis. The results showed that n-hexane extract had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on larval mortality. 100% mortality was achieved at a concentration of 1.5%, followed by a concentration of 1.25% at 95% after 48 hours. The LC50 value obtained was 1.088% at 24 hours of exposure, while the fastest LT50 was at a concentration of 1.25% for 16.34 hours. Exposure to the extract also induced morphological damage, including body darkening, swollen thorax, severed digestive tract, and transparent body. Therefore, n-hexane extract of Japanese papaya leaves has the potential to be developed as an environmentally friendly natural biolarvicide.

Abstract

Zinc deficiency can cause growth and health problems, whereas protein from soy sources contributes to essential nutritional intake. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of soy plus zinc (SPZ) supplementation on growth and kidney health in Wistar rats. This study used a randomized controlled trial design with 24 rats divided into five treatment groups, including a control group. SPZ supplementation was administered daily for 14 days with varying zinc doses (0.020 mg and 0.035 mg per gram of body weight) and palatability enhancement using vanilla flavoring. Data obtained through measurements of initial and final body weights and kidney weights were analyzed using ANOVA to determine significant differences between groups. The results showed that SPZ supplementation positively contributed to growth, as evidenced by a significant increase in the final weight of rats compared to their initial weight (p < 0.05). Histological analysis of the kidneys indicated no visible structural damage, and the average increase in kidney weight was approximately 26.5%. The combination of soy and zinc in SPZ was shown to have a synergistic effect that benefits the development and kidney health of rats, demonstrating its potential application in the context of animal nutrition.

Abstract

The utilization of marine resources as an alternative source of natural antibacterial agents has been increasingly developed in recent years. Gracilaria sp., a type of red algae, is known to contain biologically active compounds with potential antibacterial properties, particularly against Escherichia coli. This study aims to determine the antibacterial potential of methanol extract from Gracilaria sp. against E. coli using an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test. The stock solution of the extract was prepared at a concentration of 100 mg/mL and tested at concentrations of 0.05%, 1%, 5%, and 10%, with ciprofloxacin as the positive control and sterile distilled water as the negative control. The experiment was conducted with three replications. The results showed that the methanol extract of Gracilaria sp. formed inhibition zones at the highest concentrations of 10% and 5%, with an average diameter of only 0.075 mm. Thus, the methanol extract of Gracilaria sp. exhibits weak antibacterial potential against Escherichia coli, as the inhibition zone formed was significantly smaller than that of the positive control, which reached 1.7 mm.

Abstract

Aedes aegypti mosquito is the main vector for Dengue Fever (DHF), a type of disease that remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Even though various control efforts have been carried out, cases of this disease continue to be reported every year in changing numbers. One effective control strategy involves fostering community-wide engagement to eliminate mosquito breeding sites through improving environmental cleanliness—an important factor influencing the existence of breeding sites, both inside and outside the home. To achieve these activity objectives, an educational program and information dissemination has been implemented for the community in Candimas Village Natar Region, South Lampung Regency. The results show an increase in knowledge and understanding among the target group namely the residents of Candimas Village as evidenced by an increase in scores from 73.9% in the initial assessment to 87.85% in the final assessment, which represents an average increase of 42.14%.
