Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degradation of broccoli agroecosystem in Batu caused by a longterm of intensive farming and of synthetic chemical exposure using some biotic indices. Evaluation covered on quality of habitat, biodiversity, and environmental services in three organic and intensive farm, each Batu, Bumiaji, and Junrejo Regencies, using five repetitions in each location. Habitat quality was evaluated by measuring the soil organic matter, water irrigation and soil suspension pH, electric conductivity, and water turbidity in situ. Biodiversity quality was evaluated by determining the score of Importance Value Index (IVI), Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H’) and Margalef’s Richness Index (R) soil fauna using handsorting within the area of l m2, as well as refugial vegetation. Environmental service quality was evaluated by scoring using the Ecosystem Integrated Assessment (EIA). The data were analyzed statistically using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The result showed that soil organic matter and pH were obviously higher, while the irrigation water was less turbid in organic farming rather than the intensive one. Furthermore, the H’ and R indices proved that biodiversity quality in organic farming field was higher (H’ score 1.4-1.9 and R 3.5-4.0) comparing to those of intensive farming (H’ score 0.6-0.9 and R 1.2-1.6). Whereas, the ecosystem service based on EIA index revealed that the organic agroecosystem showed a fair to good quality with the score 3.0-4.3. It was higher than those of intensive farming which was classified as poor to fair with the score 1.7-2.8. Therefore, the organic broccoli agroecosystem in Batu provided a better habitat for biodiversity conservation and greater the environmental service as a sustainable farming system.Key words: Agroecosystem, Biodiversity, Ecological services, Intensive, Organic

Abstract

Sediments of Porong River estuary suspected of containing a high concentration of heavy metals. the Sediment sample was collected from Porong Estuary river at two different location. The purposes of this study to determine the distribution concentration of metals geochemical fraction (Cd, Pb and Zn) at sediment Porong River estuary and correlation Against Physico-chemical properties of sediments. Analysis of sediment includes determining the concentration of Cd, Pb and Zn and determining of physicochemical properties of sediments such as pH, salinity, redox potential, cation exchange capacity, organic materials and sediment particles size. Extraction Method performed by BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) three steps sequential extraction, where a geochemical fraction of metals divided to 4 fractions, such acid soluble, reducible, oxidized and residual fractions. Research showed Zn has the highest concentration of each fraction and followed by Pb and Cd. Concentration of Zn in Fraction 1-4 ranged from 31,909 – 84,966 mg/Kg, Pb concentrations range 3,354 – 18,956 mg/Kg, whereas Cd concentrations range between 0,221 – 0,611 mg/Kg. The order of metals geochemical fraction concentration at Fraction 1, 2, 3 and 4 is Zn>Pb>Cd. There is some correlation between metals concentration against physicochemical properties of sediment. Where the physicochemical properties of sediment influence heavy metal content and concentration in the sediment of Porong River Sidoarjo.

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to calculate the carrying capacity and growth rate ofisolated Microcystis result in Sutami reservoir on a variety of nitrate and phosphateconcentrations in the B-12 selective medium. Research was conducted in the laboratory withpure experiments using completely randomized factorial design with factors of nitrateconcentration variation (8, 16, 32, and 64 ppm) and phosphate (0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 ppm) in B-12medium. Repetition of the study was conducted three times at the same time. Microcystispopulation abundance which was counted every day until the stationary phase (day +30) wasused to calculate the rate of growth (β) and maximum abundance of Microcystis can besupported by each medium treatment (γ). The results showed that the growth rate of Microcystiswas not significantly influenced by levels of phosphate in the medium but significantly positivelycorrelated with increasing nitrate concentration in the medium. Carrying capacity or themaximum abundance (γ) of Microcystis was influenced by the combination of nitrate andphosphate in the B12 medium. Concentration of phosphate 0.4 ppm in medium combined withnitrate 8−64 ppm could support the highest abundance of Microcystis.

Abstract

Heavy metals in the aquatic sediment could be fractioned into five geochemical fractions. Assessment of these fractions is valuable to determine the bioavailable metals provided by the aquatic sediment. Physico-chemical properties of sediment determine the distribution of the fractions. The aims of this research were to determine the physico-chemical properties of sediment sample and to determine its effect to the distribution of heavy metals fraction. Sediment samples were collected from the Porong River at two stations by using Eickman Grab sampler. The samples were stored in 4oC until analysis. Physico-chemical properties of sediment were investigated, including texture, pH, salinity, cationic exchange capacity (CEC), redox potential, and organic material concentration. The geochemical fractions of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) were determined after sequential extraction using modified BCR method. As a result, texture of sediment correlated to the organic material concentration while the amount of organic material determines the third fraction of heavy metals, i.e. the oxidation fraction. CEC and pH, and salinity determined the amount of the first fraction, i.e. the exchangeable fraction. Redox potential of sediment affected the amount of the second fraction of heavy metals, i.e. the   acid reducible fraction.

Abstract

Abstract

This research was aimed to study the role of riparian trees and ecosystem degradation to determine water quality in some springs and its channels located in East Java. The research was held in some selected degraded springs in Kediri, Pasuruan, Malang, and the Meru Betiri National Park located in Jember, as a reference site. In each spring, three sites including upstream, midstream, and downstream were observed. The field observation consisted of several steps such as land use quality at river land side, geographical conditions, riparian tree diversity and water quality, quality of springs physical condition, and its channels. Riparian trees role to determine the water quality was analyzed by applying Partial Least Square analysis with Smart PLS software. Structural modelling of the interaction of riparian trees diversity with some determining variables of water quality revealed that there was an important role of riparian diversity quality towards water quality. The value of predictive relevance (Q2) was 99.11% and the model could be accepted. The riparian trees diversity and geographical conditions directly influenced the water colour and its turbidity. The quality of land use at several water bodies did not directly influence the water colour and its turbidity. Therefore, water colour and its transparency at channels were directly influenced by riparian width, ecosystem degradation shown by naturalness index, hemeroby index, environmental services index, and the slope of landside.
