Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (SLM) as well as its challenges in high schools in Bangka Belitung. The study combined a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Principals, instructors, librarians, and a number of student representatives from grades X through XII from three schools in Kab. Bangka Barat were the subjects of this study. In order to gather data for this study, observation, interviews, and documentation were used. The study's findings demonstrated that the SLM program had not been executed at SMA/MA in Kab. Bangka Barat in the most effective way possible. This was evident from the inadequate preparatory phase, which prevented the SLM program from being implemented to its full potential. The implementation of this SLM remained hampered by a number of challenges, according to this study. These included students' low reading interest, the school's limited supply of reading materials, its lack of time to give students reading assignments, and its inconsistent application. Also, it had not been shown how important parents of students were to the success of this program.

Abstract

Misogyny and sexism have become prominent issues in society, particularly in the workplace and daily life. Examining the role of media narratives in shaping public perception and framing events to serve specific agendas or ideologies can offer diverse perspectives. This study conducts of discourse analysis of two media sources: the BBC World Service video "Women fight back as South Korea tries to abolish its Gender Equality Ministry" and the interview video "What Koreans Think about Misogyny in Korea" by Asian Boss. By focusing on narrative structure, language, and representations of misogyny and sexism, this research aimed to reveal how these media platforms frame the issue. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzed and interpreted the language in these sources. By using Van Dijk's discourse analysis theory with three analytical frameworks (textual analysis, social cognition and social context) as a research tool to explore this issue through the media. These findings indicated that BBC emphasizes structural and systemic issues from a global feminist perspective, focusing on formal cases, while Asian Boss highlights personal experiences and local opinions, focusing on community attitudes. The differences in framing not only underscore the varying emphases in how each media outlet addresses misogyny and sexism but also reveal the impact of media perspectives in shaping public understanding of these issues in South Korea. This analysis suggested broader implications for gender equality policies and the ongoing discourse surrounding women’s rights in the country.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and analyze derivational morphemes found in the Smile Brush Webtoon by Waroo, focusing on their types, word-formation processes, and their effects on word class and meaning. Derivational morphemes played an essential role in vocabulary expansion by changing grammatical categories and enriching lexical meaning. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, using the morphological theory of Haspelmath and Sims (2010) to classify the data and focused on the role of affixation in word formation within digital media contexts. The data were collected from episodes 1 to 35 of the Webtoon, resulting in a total of 20 derivational morphemes, consisting of 16 suffixes and 4 prefixes. These morphemes were categorized into ten derivational processes, including verb to noun (dis-, -ment), adjective to noun (-ness), noun to noun (auto-, -ian), verb to verb (re-), noun to verb (un-), verb to adjective (-ful), noun to adjective (-less, -ous, -ful), and adjective to adverb (-ly). The most frequent derivation type was adjective to adverb, marked by the use of the suffix -ly, with a total of eight occurrences. The findings indicated that derivational morphemes significantly contributed to the transformation of grammatical categories and the expansion of word meanings. The dominance of suffix usage over prefixes suggested that suffixes were more productive in the morphological structure of digital narrative texts. This research provided insight into the use of derivational morphology in contemporary media and served as a reference for future linguistic analysis in digital content.

Abstract

The School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS), launched nationally in 2015, aims to cultivate a reading and writing culture among Indonesian students. In the post-pandemic era, however, its implementation faces new challenges and calls for revitalization. This qualitative descriptive study explored the implementation of GLS in senior high schools in the Bangka Belitung Islands, focusing on (a) current practices and challenges, (b) the roles of principals, teachers, and students, and (c) strategies for strengthening literacy culture. Data were collected from 8 senior high schools through semi-structured interviews with 42 participants (principals, teachers, and students) and classroom and school environment observations. Then, the data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Findings showed that while schools continued routine activities, such as the 15-minute reading program and the creation of reading corners, challenges persisted, including limited resources, uneven stakeholder engagement, and barriers specific to archipelagic contexts. Some schools, however, displayed strong leadership and community participation. To revitalize GLS, this study recommends integrating digital and print literacy resources, enhancing teacher capacity, promoting student-centered projects, and fostering collaboration with families and local communities. Unlike previous studies that primarily focused on policy-level implementation, this study provides contextual insights into literacy practices in an archipelagic region, highlighting the importance of geographically responsive strategies for literacy development. These findings underscore the need for contextualized, sustainable approaches to literacy development and provide guidance for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in advancing literacy culture in Indonesia’s post-pandemic education landscape.
