Abstract

Abstract

Statins are a family of drugs used to treat hyperlipidemia with a recognized capacity to prevent disease occurrence. Widespread use of statins is limited by the presence of associated toxicity or intolerance, which affects the level of drug monitoring. Statin toxicity or intolerance varies from 10-15%. Statin-associated muscle symptoms are the most common statin toxicity (SAMS). In this review, we aim to report on the mechanism of action of statins causing the muscle symptoms of SAMS. The results showed that statins cause mitochondrial dysfunction due to oxidative stress. The mechanism of oxidative stress due to statins is due to the inhibition of ubiquinone protein, activation of iNOS, decreased mitochondrial biogenesis, reduction of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. the data reported as a whole may suggest that statins have a major effect on mitochondrial function related to oxidative stress

Abstract

Introduction: Academic self-efficacy, defined as an individual's belief in their ability to overcome academic challenges, has consistently been linked to improved academic performance. However, its impact on key assessments in medical education, such as the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and the Student Oral Case Analysis (SOCA), remains underexplored. This study examines the influence of academic self-efficacy on knowledge achievement in the CBT and SOCA exams among medical students in the Neuropsychiatry block at the Faculty of Medicine, Muslim University of Indonesia. Objective: This study aims to assess the impact of academic self-efficacy on students’ knowledge achievement in both the CBT and SOCA exams and to provide insight into the role of self-efficacy across different exam formats. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved 376 students from the 2022 cohort. Academic self-efficacy was measured using a validated questionnaire, and test scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The relationship between self-efficacy and test scores was evaluated using Pearson’s correlation test. Results: The study found a significant positive correlation between academic self-efficacy and SOCA exam scores (r = 0.183, p = 0.000), although the correlation was weak. No significant relationship was found between self-efficacy and CBT scores (r = -0.075, p = 0.148). The majority of students reported high self-efficacy, with the average SOCA score (83.78) significantly higher than the CBT score (60.08). Conclusion: Academic self-efficacy significantly influences performance in interactive, communication-based exams like SOCA but has minimal impact on multiple-choice exams like CBT, which rely on recall or recognition. These findings emphasize the importance of fostering self-efficacy in medical education. Educational institutions should consider interventions such as self-efficacy training, learning strategies, and critical thinking development to enhance students' confidence and academic success.

Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease that causes high morbidity and mortality globally. The prevalence of hypertension continues to increase, including in Indonesia, including Barru Regency with a high incidence rate. One factor that is thought to play a role is high uric acid levels or hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia can trigger activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and oxidative stress, which contribute to increased blood pressure. Several studies have shown a close relationship between uric acid levels and the incidence of hypertension. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the relationship between uric acid levels and the incidence of hypertension in Takkalasi Village, Barru Regency. Methods: This type of research is a cross sectional study approach with a sampling technique, namely purposive sampling with a total of 23 samples each in the hyperuricemia group and non-hyperuricemia group so that the total sample is 46 samples. The research data is primary data taken directly in August - September 2024 in Takkalasi Village, Barru Regency which was then analyzed using the chi square test. Research Results: It was found that non-hyperuricemia respondents who suffered from hypertension were 21.7% and hyperuricemia sufferers who experienced hypertension were 32.6%. The chi square test that has been carried out shows a value of p=0.0139 (p>0.005). Conclusion: Uric acid levels are not significantly associated with hypertension. Even so, people are still asked to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
