Abstract

The present study is a content analysis that aims to investigate cultural dimension in an English textbook prescribed for senior high school in Indonesia which is officially published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017. The data include 11 conversations, 17 reading texts, and 83 visual elements that are analysed qualitatively by employing Byram’s checklist. The findings show that stereotypes and national identity dominate the cultural dimensions with 28.05% and followed by social interaction and socialisation and life cycle with 15.9%. The occurrence of national geography is significant with 12.2%. However, social identity and social group, belief and behaviour, national history and social and political institutions are prescribed with less than 10%. The inclusion of various cultural dimensions has certain purposes. The inclusion of national identity, for instance, is pivotal for learners since the textbook is prescribed for senior high school students who are tremendously curious to determine their characters. This idea is aligned with the aim of the curriculum to facilitate the development of students with good character, good behaviour and strong nationality. It is concluded that the English textbook in Indonesia is on the way to its perfection in terms of proportionally represented cultural dimensions. However, the presence of various cultural aspects of the target culture and international target culture is also important to help students develop cultural competence and a certain level of respect as well as tolerance for others. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of online English learning during the covid-19 pandemic at State Islamic Secondary School (MTsN) 3 Mataram. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Data was collected through a questionnaire which involved 40 students from class VIII-A. Based on the data analysis from questionnaire, it can be concluded that the students neutrally perceive the utilization of Google Classroom as they found several challenges such as absence of interaction room, lack of internet access etc. However, the interview results indicated that most of them have a positive perception on the use of Google Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic due to ease of use, the flexibility and effectiveness as well as its access. It is suggested that teachers should be able to adjust their teaching strategy by considering students' factual condition as well as preferences.

Abstract

Teacher mentors play a crucial role in supporting and guiding student teachers during their teaching practicum. While the benefits of teaching practicum and mentorship are well-documented, this qualitative study aims to delve deeper into the experiences of five EFL student teachers to understand the role of  teacher mentor during student teacher practicum. Through in-depth interviews, the research explores the perceptions of student teachers towards the practicum and mentorship. The results reveal that the role of teacher mentors is positively perceived by most of the students, because most of the mentors play a pivotal role in providing guidance and motivation, desiging a lesson plan and giving constructive feedback.  However, some students experienced lack of guidance, support as well as constructive feedback from the teacher mentors. In general, the mentorship aspect is particularly valued, as it offers essential support and professional growth opportunities. However, amidst the positive experiences, the study also uncovers various challenges encountered by student teachers such as lack of class management skill, limited student engagement and active involvement in the learning process, inadequate facilities, limited technology or classroom space and lack of sufficient preparation.

Abstract

Despite its significance particularly when it comes to writing competence, numerous studies have revealed that grammar is still considered complicated to grasp and used by students. The purpose of this study was to determine how video-based instruction affects students' understanding of grammar in writing assignments. This sequential explanatory mixed-method study aimed to investigate how students' grammatical skills especially in degree of comparison might be improved. Quantitative evaluations such as creating written test materials for the students and qualitative interviews with both teachers and students were employed. The findings showed that students' comprehension of grammatical rules for statistical tests had improved. Descriptive data evidenced that the students were clearly excited, enthralled, and actively involved with the tactics; served as a scaffold to lower obstacles; enhanced language learners' understanding; and increased students' vocabulary. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches evidenced the significance of implementing English videos to promote students’ grammatical competence in writing skills. The study's implications and suggestions are discussed.

Abstract

EFL Students’ Perceptions and Experiences on the Utilization of Ling App in Learning Pronunciation. Objectives: This study investigates the use of the Ling app, an AI-driven tool, in learning pronunciation among EFL students in Islamic higher education. The research aimed to explore students' perceptions and experiences regarding the app's effectiveness in improving pronunciation skills. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative data from questionnaires completed by 103 participants and qualitative data from interviews with 10 students. The questionnaire assessed perceptions of the app's usability and impact, while the interviews provided deeper insights into students' experiences and challenges. Findings: The findings indicate that the Ling app significantly enhances pronunciation proficiency, fosters learner confidence, and supports autonomous learning. Key features, such as speech recognition, real-time feedback, and gamified exercises, were particularly effective in enabling students to correct errors and practice independently. The app's interactive nature and gamification elements maintained student engagement and motivation. However, challenges were identified, including limited access to premium features, dependence on internet connectivity, and occasional inaccuracies in AI feedback when recognizing diverse accents. Despite these limitations, the app proved to be a valuable supplementary tool for pronunciation learning, offering flexible and engaging practice opportunities. The results underscore the app's potential to address significant gaps in traditional learning methods by providing self-paced and interactive learning experiences. Conclusion: The study concludes that the Ling app is a promising tool for EFL students, but further development is needed to enhance customization, address technical limitations, and cater to a wider range of learner needs, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Keywords: ling app, pronunciation, utilization.

Abstract

Distance learning is an alternative way to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. In this situation, learning was conducted through electronic media and internet connection independently. So, in this case, students must take the initiative to understand the material without having a face-to-face guide from the teacher which might increase their learning autonomy. This research aims to examine students’ reflections on how they learned English autonomously during the Covid-19 pandemic unveil the perception of learner autonomy, and find out the factors that influence learner autonomy after experiencing distance learning. The present research implemented a mixed-method of research design by administering the questionnaire and conducting a semi-structured interview. The respondents were the students of the English Language Education Study Program at the State Islamic University of Mataram. The findings showed that students gain autonomy in English learning by utilizing the internet resources optimally, such as YouTube, Google, social media, and learning applications during distance learning. They also have a very positive response to learning autonomy, in terms of the role of the learner, the role of the lecturer, the type of task, and the role of the environment

Abstract

The present research aims to explore English teachers’ perception of intercultural competence in English language teaching at one of the Islamic schools in Lombok, Indonesia. Cultural categories and aspects were analyzed using Cortazzi and Jin’s category of culture and Byram’s checklist of cultural aspects. This qualitative case study employed observation, textbook analysis, and interviews to gain the primary data. Three English teachers were involved in an in-depth interview. The findings revealed that the teachers positively perceive intercultural competence in ELT. Furthermore, local culture was still dominant in the textbook and the teachers confirmed that local culture exposure was pivotal for students as they might be able to introduce the cultural content or products to foreigners. In terms of cultural aspects, the teachers recommended food and historical or famous places that should be recognized by the students to enhance intercultural competence. It is suggested that English teachers should introduce cross-cultural values toward intercultural competence to the students.

Abstract

This research examines the utilisation of ProWritingAid, an AI-driven writing instrument, by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students at Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, with 104 participants from several institutions in Lombok, to assess the efficacy of ProWritingAid in enhancing writing skills, specifically in rectifying grammatical errors, improving sentence structure, and advancing vocabulary growth. The results indicate that 53.9% of students had significant vocabulary enhancement, whereas 39.4% noted increased writing confidence. Notwithstanding these favourable results, over 47% of participants expressed uncertainty regarding the tool's overall effect on their writing proficiency, indicating a need for additional investigation. Qualitative data obtained from interviews highlighted the tool's accessibility and user-friendliness, with students often comparing ProWritingAid to a personal writing instructor.Nevertheless, the report also underscores difficulties. Several students indicated challenges with the interface and articulated the necessity for enhanced training to effectively leverage the tool's functionalities. The findings indicate that ProWritingAid has considerable potential as an auxiliary educational tool within Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) frameworks, although its efficacy relies on user assistance and interface refinement. This research underscores the significance of incorporating technology-based tools into language instruction while tackling user problems. ProWritingAid can improve both academic and personal writing; nevertheless, maximising its advantages necessitates focused training and ongoing enhancements to the platform's usability. Such developments would reinforce its position as a transformative instrument for EFL learners in their pursuit of writing proficiency.
