Abstract

Efficient and reliable public transportation systems, particularly bus services, played a crucial role in regional mobility and economic development. However, maintenance challenges impacted service quality, as seen in PT. SPS – Solo’s Scania fleet. Traditional reactive maintenance methods proved insufficient, leading to increased operational costs and unexpected failures. This study applied Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) to optimize maintenance policies, identifying critical components and establishing effective strategies. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) revealed the brake chamber as the most critical component, followed by the stabilizer and tie rod/slack adjuster. Maintenance interval analysis recommended Time-Directed (TD) intervals from 26,090 km to 35,084 km and Condition-Directed (CD) intervals from 25,900 km to 70,168 km, based on component degradation patterns. Cost analysis highlighted air bellows as the highest-cost component (Rp. 2,350,000), while brake chambers had the lowest cost (Rp. 150,000). The study demonstrated that RCM improved fleet reliability and reduced maintenance costs. Implementing structured maintenance schedules, training programs, and condition monitoring systems was recommended. These findings provided a foundation for enhancing longdistance bus operations and could be adapted for other transportation sectors to achieve cost-efficient and reliable fleet management.

Abstract

Microsleep presents a critical safety challenge for Indonesian drivers, particularly affecting long-distance transportation where existing detection methods remain costly and impractical for widespread deployment. This study introduces a novel application of Random Forest algorithm specifically tailored to Indonesian driving contexts, utilizing locally-sourced accident data combined with driver behavioral surveys to predict microsleep likelihood. Unlike previous studies that relied primarily on physiological monitoring or international datasets, this research leverages accessible vehicle and environmental variables including driving duration, road conditions, weather patterns, and work schedules from National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) records spanning 2013-2023. The Random Forest model, configured with 100 trees and maximum depth of 10, demonstrated 87.50% overall accuracy with perfect recall (1.00) for microsleep detection when validated using stratified k-fold cross-validation. This study uniquely contributes to the field by demonstrating that context-specific environmental and behavioral factors can effectively predict microsleep incidents without expensive physiological monitoring, offering a practical foundation for developing cost-effective vehicle safety systems tailored to Indonesian road conditions and driving patterns. The findings provide actionable insights for transportation policy development and establish a framework for implementing affordable microsleep detection in developing countries with similar traffic characteristics.

Abstract

The braking system was a crucial component in ensuring the safety of motor vehicles on the road. Brake failures, such as brake fade or total malfunction, could result in fatal accidents. Therefore, an accurate and realistic testing method was necessary to measure the effectiveness of a vehicle’s braking system. This study aimed to develop a deceleration measuring device based on GPS, which could be used in road test methods. The device was designed using an ESP32 microcontroller combined with a BN-220 GPS module, RTC real-time clock sensor, 16x2 LCD, thermal printer, and microSD storage media. Testing was conducted on a Mitsubishi L300 vehicle at the Depok Beach runway in Yogyakarta, with initial speed variations ranging from 10 to 80 km/h. Calibration results showed that the device had an accuracy of 99.64% with an average error of 0.36%. Meanwhile, the test results recorded deceleration values ranging from 0.74 to 3.26 m/s², depending on the initial speed and braking conditions. Based on these findings, the developed device proved to be accurate and feasible as an alternative method for field testing of braking systems.
