Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of alkali treatment using NaOH solution on the mechanical properties and microstructure of hybrid composites based on epoxy resin reinforced with petung bamboo fiber and fiberglass. Bamboo fibers were immersed in five NaOH concentration variations (0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%) before composite fabrication using the hand lay-up method. Tensile testing was performed according to ASTM D-638 standard and microstructural characterization using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results showed that 9% alkali treatment produced the best mechanical performance with a tensile strength of 58.68 MPa, elongation of 4.15%, and elastic modulus of 1413.49 MPa. SEM analysis indicated improved fiber-matrix adhesion due to removal of lignin and hemicellulose. Optimal alkali concentration enhanced composite performance, making it a potential candidate for eco-friendly vehicle interior applications.

Abstract

Pertumbuhan penduduk meningkatkan kebutuhan akan bahan bakar. Hal ini berbanding terbalik dengan penurunan ketersediaan bahan bakar fosil. Oleh karena itu, pemerintah Indonesia bertujuan untuk meningkatkan bauran sumber energi terbarukan. Salah satu kemungkinannya adalah memanfaatkan limbah kulit singkong untuk diolah menjadi bioetanol. Salah satu langkah terpenting terfokus pada proses hidrolisis dan fermentasi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh suhu hidrolisis dan waktu fermentasi terhadap hasil kadar etanol dengan melakukan pengulangan sebanyak 3 kali. Penelitian ini menggunakan variasi suhu hidrolisis dan waktu fermentasi dengan variasi suhu 90°C, 95°C, 100°C dan waktu fermentasi selama 3 hari, 5 hari dan 7 hari dengan melakukan pengulangan sebanyak 3 kali. Dari hasil penelitian hidrolisis dengan kadar gula reduksi tertinggi diperoleh pada sampel suhu 100°C mendapatkan nilai rata-rata kadar brix sebesar 31°Brix. Sedangkan kadar etanol tertinggi diperoleh pada suhu 100°C dengan waktu 7 hari pengulangan ke 3 memperoleh nilai sebesar 58% kadar etanol. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah peningkatan suhu hidrolisis dapat menaikan kadar gula reduksi karena mempercepat laju reaksi hidrolisis. Selain itu juga dapat membantu penguraian lignoselulosa karena lebih mudah terpapar enzim dan pengaruh dari waktu fermentasi semakin lama waktu fermentasi yang digunakan semakin tinggi pula kadar etanolnya karena ragi memiliki waktu lebih banyak untuk mengubah gula (glukosa, fruktosa) hasil hidrolisis kulit singkong menjadi etanol dan CO?.

Abstract

Abstrak Limbah organik jika tidak dikelola dengan baik akan menimbulkan berbagai masalah, baik bagi kesehatan, maupun lingkungan. Pengelolaannya menjadi pupuk cair dapat membantu petani memanfaatkan ulang limbah dapur dan pertanian mereka menjadi lebih berdaya guna bagi usaha tani mereka. Petani di Desa Jatimulyo, Jenggawah, Jember, Jawa Timur telah mengenal dan memanfatkan pupuk organik cair (POC) dengan proses pembuatan secara manual. Karena manual, proses pembuatannya memerlukan waktu sekitar enam pekan. Proses pembutaan POC dapat dipercepat dengan pengadukan masinal, terutama pada periode fermentasi yakni dengan pengadukan berkala dan teratur. Tim pengabdian terdiri atas gabungan mahasiswa Teknik Mesin dan Teknik Industri Pertanian melihat peluang ini dan membuat mesin pengaduk untuk POC. Pengenalan teknologi ini ke  masyarakat membuat kelompok tani sangat bergembira, karena dapat memercepat proses pembuatan POC menjadi tiga pekan. Para petani mengharapkan keberlanjutan program mahasiswa mengabdi di desa dengan berbagia inovasi dan teknologi yang lain untuk kemajuan mereka. Kata kunci: limbah organik, pupuk organic cair, mesin pengaduk, pengabdian masyarakat Abstract If not managed properly, organic waste can cause various problems, both for health and the environment. Processing it into liquid fertilizer can help farmers reuse their kitchen and agricultural waste, making it more effective for their farming businesses. Farmers in Jatimulyo Village, Jenggawah, Jember, East Java, have become familiar with and utilize liquid organic fertilizer (POC) through a manual manufacturing process. Due to the manual process, the manufacturing time is approximately six weeks. The POC manufacturing process can be accelerated by mechanical stirring, especially during the fermentation period, which requires periodic and regular stirring. A community service team consisting of Mechanical Engineering and Agricultural Industrial Engineering students saw this opportunity and created a mixing machine for POC. The introduction of this technology to the community greatly delighted the farmer group, as it can accelerate the POC manufacturing process to three weeks. The farmers hope for the continuation of the student service program in the village, along with various other innovations and technologies to further their progress. Abstract

The cutting fluid is one of the essential factors in machining to increase machinability. The issuance of ISO 14000 about reducing the use of cutting fluid for its danger for operator and environment has encouraged many researchers to find ways to minimize its use. The Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) is an answer to it. To further reduce the use of cutting fluid, a device that complies with MQL criteria for controlling the spray based on the tool temperature has successfully designed. This paper is discussing the effect of applying this device to the chips formation. The experiments were on turning of AISI 4340 using carbide tools. The Taguchi method L9 used to design the experiments. The variations made on the method of applying the cutting fluid, depth of cut, and cutting fluid composition. The chips formation was calculated based on the value of the degree of serration. Analysis of the S/N ratio, followed by ANOVA, revealed that the cutting fluids application method is the least factor affecting the chips formation. In contrast, the depth of cut influences the chips formation by 75 per cent more. The highest degree of serration achieved when applying the combination of depth of cut of 1.8 mm, the composition of 5:5, and flood method of applying cutting fluid.

Abstract

Waste management remains a critical challenge in rural and semi-urban communities in Indonesia, where limited infrastructure and low public awareness often lead to environmental degradation. Jelbuk Village in Jember Regency produces approximately 1,200 kg of household waste per day, most of which is disposed of in rivers or vacant land. This condition has resulted in pollution, health risks, and flooding, while the economic potential of waste recycling remains untapped. To address these issues, the Universitas Jember community service team implemented an integrated waste management program that combines technical innovation with community empowerment. The technical approach involved designing and fabricating a portable organic waste chopper machine with a capacity of 120 kg/hour, enabling the production of compost from organic waste. In parallel, inorganic waste such as plastics and metals was separated for recycling. The non-technical approach included training, awareness campaigns, and mentoring in simple bookkeeping to strengthen community capacity for sustainable waste management. The program successfully reduced waste accumulation, improved sanitation, and created new economic opportunities through compost production and the sale of recyclable materials. Furthermore, the involvement of students in design and implementation enhanced academic outcomes and knowledge transfer. This initiative demonstrates that integrated technical and social approaches can effectively transform waste problems into community-based solutions with long-term sustainability.
