Abstract

The sources of DEHP exposure are very wide because it is used as a plasticizer and additive in cosmetics and personal care products. Epidemiological studies have shown that DEHP and its metabolites can increase the risk of metabolic syndrome. However, this observation is still debated. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between DEHP exposure and metabolic syndrome in adults. This study used three databases, namely Pubmed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect, with English-language publications from 2019 to 2024. Seven cross-sectional and cohort studies from South Korea, the United States, Mexico, and Taiwan met the inclusion criteria selected through the PRISMA stages They were assessed for quality using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. The findings showed that only studies conducted in the United States and South Korea showed a significant association between DEHP and its metabolites (MEHP, MECPP, MCMHP, MEHHP, and MEOHP) with metabolic syndrome. However, these findings were limited to men, white men, premenopausal women, and postmenopausal women. In conclusion, DEHP and its metabolites showed inconsistent results on metabolic syndrome in adults. Recommendations are that further studies are needed with more robust designs in the future in various countries to clearly describe the relationship between DEHP and metabolic syndrome and strong regulation of phthalate use to minimize exposure.

Abstract

Background Low birth weight (LBW) children are at risk of developmental delay, including impaired motor skills, cognitive function, and stress regulation. Brain Gym® activities have been shown to improve motor coordination, attention span, and fine motor skills in preschool and primary school-aged children. Evidence for the use of Brain Gym® is limited for infants and toddlers with medical vulnerabilities such as low birth weight (LBW), who are at increased risk of developmental delay and heightened stress sensitivity. Objective To evaluate the impact of Brain Gym® exercises on cognitive function, motor skills (fine and gross motor), and cortisol levels in children aged 12–23 months with a history of LBW compared to a control group. Methods  A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted in Sragen, Indonesia, involving 80 low birth weight (LBW) children aged 12 to 23 months. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups: an experimental group receiving Brain Gym® intervention and a control group. The experimental group received Brain Gym® exercises combined with routine baby massage, while the control group received only baby massage. Cognitive and motor development were assessed using the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST), while stress biomarkers were measured through salivary cortisol levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Assessments were conducted at baseline (pre-intervention) and after the 8-week intervention period. The evaluators who administered the DDST and laboratory staff analyzing cortisol were blinded to group allocation. Results The primary outcomes of this study were motor skills, cortisol levels, and cognitive function. At baseline, there were no significant differences between the Brain Gym® group and the control group in fine motor, gross motor, or cognitive function scores, as assessed by the DDST. After the intervention, between-group comparisons revealed no statistically significant differences in gross motor, fine motor, cortisol, or cognitive function outcomes. Within-group analysis showed that gross motor scores in the Brain Gym® group significantly increased after the intervention (P = 0.038), while fine motor scores demonstrated a non-significant trend toward improvement (P = 0.110). Cortisol levels in the Brain Gym® group significantly decreased (P = 0.009), whereas the control group exhibited no significant changes in gross motor (P = 0.548), fine motor, or cortisol levels (P = 0.118). Cognitive function scores remained statistically unchanged in both groups. Conclusion Our findings suggest that Brain Gym® exercises can improve gross motor function and reduce stress in LBW children. These findings highlight the potential of early interventions in enhancing development, but should be interpreted cautiously due to the modest sample size and short intervention period. Future studies should focus on the long-term effects and the mechanisms underlying these improvements.

Abstract

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an endemic disease. It has become a public health concern. Mosquito control activities are needed to control vectors and prevent DHF. Therefore, we conduct a literature review of mosquito control activities associated with DHF in Indonesia. This study applies the selected articles using PRISMA (Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses), and they are sourced from Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, ProQuest, Ebscohost, and Portal Garuda. The criteria for the selected articles are full-text articles, published in 2015-2020, and those which are published in national journals SINTA 2 or international journals. This study reviewed 683 articles, out of which were selected for further examination. The key variables, such as draining water containers, covering water containers, burying and recycling used containers, using mosquito repellent, using larvacide , keeping larva-eating fish, having mosquito repellent plants, installing wire mesh on ventilation, showed significant correlation with Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) incidence. Among the selected articles, 38.89% employed cross-sectional design, and the rest belonged to case-control studies. Most articles have variable draining water containers (55.56%), 50% covers water containers, 80% have a significant association between draining water containers and DHF incidence, and 66.67% have a significant association between covering water containers and DHF incidence. Most articles show that not implementing PSN (Pemberantasan sarang nyamuk) or PSN 3M (Pemberantasan sarang nyamuk, menguras, menutup, mengubur plus) is associated with the incidence of DHF and is a risk factor for the occurrence of DHF. On the other hand, the implementation of PSN or PSN 3M Plus will be a protective factor.

Abstract

The Troso weaving industry in Jepara, Indonesia, is a traditional craft sector that relies on synthetic dyes and manual production, thereby exposing workers to chromium (Cr) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) with potential respiratory and neurological risks. This study aimed to analyze their association with respiratory and neurological disorders among workers. A cross-sectional design was applied involving 101 weaving workers from four production sites. Environmental sampling measured Cr concentrations in wastewater and PM2.5/PM10 in the ambient air, while worker characteristics and health complaints were assessed using the ECSC-87 and Q18 questionnaire. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and odds ratios. Cr concentrations in wastewater ranged from <0.010 to 0.104 mg/L, remaining below the effluent quality standard of 1.0 mg/L but confirming the continuous use of chromium-based dyes discharged without treatment. Average PM2.5 and PM10 levels were 108.75 µg/m³ and 117.75 µg/m³, both exceeding national air quality standards (55 and 75 µg/m³). Bivariate analysis showed that respiratory disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration ≥40 hours/week (OR=7.333; p=0.0001) and working period >5 years (OR=20.935; p=0.0001), whereas dye type, dyeing frequency, and PPE use were not significant. Neurological disorders were significantly associated with exposure duration (p=0.001), working period (p=0.001), type of dye (p=0.0001), frequency of dyeing (p=0.018), and PPE use (p=0.0001). Environmental monitoring confirmed elevated PM levels and chromium-based dye use, while statistical analysis showed that prolonged exposure and long working periods associated with respiratory disorders, and neurological disorders were linked to multiple occupational factors.

Abstract

Background: Wonogiri Regency is one of the dengue endemic areas in Central Java with a fluctuating number of cases during 2014-2018. The number of dengue cases drastically increased nearly 4 times amounting 52 cases in 2016 to 207 cases in 2017. Weather factors such as rainfall, humidity, temperature, and wind velocity can affect the reproduction and spread of DHF vectors. Objectives: This study was aimed to analyze the association between weather factors (rainfall, humidity, temperature and wind velocity) with the incidence of dengue fever in Wonogiri Regency in 2014-2018. Research Metodes: This research was an analytic observational study using cross sectional approach. The type of data used was secondary data about the weather (rainfall, humidity, temperature and wind velocity) in Wonogiri Regency which was obtained from the Wonogiri Meteorological Station and data on the number of dengue incidents in Wonogiri Regency which were obtained from the Health Office of Central Java Province. The data were used each month for 5 years, from January 2014 to December 2018. Data were analyzed by using univariate and bivariate analysis (Rank Spearman correlation test), because only the humidity variable is normally distributed. Results: The highest number of dengue cases during 2014-2018 as many as 30 cases in November 2018 with an average of 6 cases, the highest rainfall was 887 mm with an average 191.05 mm, the highest humidity was 91.55% with an average of 86.77%, the highest temperature was 28.75oC with an average of 27.50oC and the highest wind velocity was 7.86 knots with an average of 0.89 knots. The results of the Spearman Rank correlation statistical test showed that there was a significant association with moderate strength and a positive direction between rainfall and the incidence of DHF (p = 0.001 and r = 0.420), which means that the increasing of rainfall, the more the number of DHF incidents. There was no significant association between humidity and the incidence of dengue fever (p = 0.925 and r = 0.012). There is a significant association with moderate strength and a negative direction between temperature and the incident of DHF (p = 0.001 and r = -0.415), which means that the increasing the temperature, the number of dengue cases decreases. There is no significant association between wind velocity and the incident of dengue (p = 0.577 and r = -0.073). Conclusion: Rainfall causes the breeding place of Aedes mosquitoes to increase, as a result it has an effect on the increase of the mosquito population. Temperature affects the number of eggs produced by Aedes mosquitoes, so that the density of adult mosquitoes increases.
