Abstract

The objective of the present study was to investigate whether there was a correlation between students’ characteristics and students’ English proficiency. The sample was made up of 44 English Education students in a private university in Bandarlampung.A set of online questionnaire with a total of 30 questions was distributed in order to collect information about students’ characteristics as well as their English proficiency score.Results suggest that there was a significant difference between extroverted and introverted students in relation to their English proficiency. The findings indicate that the significance value of the p-value is 0.005 (<0.05). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The magnitude of the correlation is -0.440 which indicates that the correlation is a moderate negative (downhill) linear relationship. As the EPT score increases, the students tend to be more introverted.

Abstract

The advancement of technology has given an impact on education, especially in comprehension way. This means in the world of literature, especially reading people get the benefit of improving their capability in terms of comprehension everywhere and anywhere. Comprehension has given the best impact to develop skills like listening, speaking, and reading. The main focus of this will be reading comprehension with the tools of technology advancement. This is leading to a better quality of learning for the people, especially the EFL students and language learners. There are so many media that allow the reader to access the easiest way to gain information or to develop themselves. Especially in the era of 4.0 where technology became the main media for the people to reach. This is important to give an analysis of the effectiveness of electronic media for the readers in this era. The effectivity allowed the reader to gain easy access, to the improvement and any other kind.

Abstract

Pandemi Corona-19 yang telah melanda sejak 2019 ini sangat berakibat pada berbagai askpek kehidupan dikarenakan beberapa kebijakan untuk menekan penyebaran virus tersebut. Salah satu kebijakan dari pemerintah yaitu pembelajaran dalam jaringan (daring) yang dimulai pada tahun 2020 hingga awal 2022. Hal ini menyebabkan siswa baru sangat minim bertatap muka pada hampir dua tahun masa belajar disekolah dan membuat pembelajaran kurang maksimal, utamanya dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing. Oleh karena itu, tim pengabdian dari Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia memberikan pelatihan tips dan trik mahir Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa siswi kelas XI di SMA Padang Cerimin di masa pembelajaran yang sudah mulai dilakukan secara luar jaringan (luring). Pada kegiatan ini, tim pengabdian menggunakan metode pendidikan masyarakat. Hal ini bertujuan agar siswa siswi lebih mudah dalam memahami Bahasa Inggris dikarenakan kegiatan ini fokus langsung kepada tips dan trik untuk mendukung materi yang diterangkan oleh guru.

Abstract

Keterampilan berbicara di depan umum atau public speaking masih belum sepenuhnya dimiliki oleh para siswa. Keengganan tampil di depan publik ini akibat rendahnya rasa kepercayaan diri, dan minimnya penguasaan teknik berbicara di depan umum. Ketidakmampuan ini menyebabkan komunikasi yang seharusnya efektif, menjadi tergradasi. Bahkan seringkali terjadi kesalahpahaman komunikasi di depan publik. Kesalahpahaman ini didokumentasikan dan tersebar di dunia maya. Para siswa pun menjadi rentan dengan tindakan perundungan atau bullying di dunia maya. Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang dilakukan di MAN 1 Lampung Tengah bertujuan untuk memberikan pendampingan kepada para siswa di sekolah tersebut untuk memiliki kemampuan public speaking yang baik. Terdapat empat sesi dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu: 1) penyampaian materi mengenai Public speaking, 2) tips and trik, serta best practice dalam Public speaking, 3) performance dari siswa-siswi MAN 1 Lampung Tengah dan mahasiswa Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukan bahwa para siswa yang pada awalnya memiliki kemampuan public speaking yang rendah mengalami peningkatan kemampuan public speaking mengikuti kegiatan pendampingan pembelajaran Public Speaking dalam Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini ditunjukan dengan respon positif siswa selama mengikuti kegiatan dan hasil kuesioner terkait persepsi siswa terhadap kegiatan. Kegiatan serupa sebagai kelanjutan proses pembelajaran juga diharapkan guna tercapai tujuan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris secara menyeluruh.

Abstract

The phenomenon of fossilization as the feature of interlanguage has been acknowledged and studied many times since the emergence of the theory proposed by Selinker which came into existence in the field of SLA in 1972. The premise of interlanguage as a separate language system used by second language learners as well as foreign language learners in learning their target language is credited to Selinker. Fossilization in interlanguage is coined by Selinker and is generally defined as a cessation of learning the target language. Nevertheless, the notion that interlanguage is fossilized is still open to question. Thus, this present study aims to provide insight to the reader about the concept of fossilization by defining and characterizing interlanguage and fossilization in second and foreign language acquisition, discussing the causes of fossilization in interlanguage development, as well as examining the relationship between interlanguage development and Universal Grammar principle in an attempt to help the reader better grasp and comprehend the phenomenon.

Abstract

Nowadays, a wide range of professions around the world employs English as an International Language. Many people learn English to keep up with the worldwide advances in areas like education, technology, tourism, health, and economics. English is widely utilized in many facets of human life. English is additionally necessary for graduation. Students must pass the English proficiency test to graduate from university (EPT). Self-esteem, an essential component of personality, affects people's attitudes and behaviors. Self-esteem is frequently associated with good mental health, effective living, successful learning, and even a good quality of life. How people view themselves, whether favorably or unfavorably, is a measure of their self-esteem. Since self-esteem and academic performance are intertwined, the researchers want to know whether or not students' self-esteem correlates with their level of English proficiency. This study, which involved 38 participants from Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia, used the quantitative method. This study's conclusions showed a connection between students' self-esteem and their EPT score. The researchers conclude that students' self-esteem did have an impact on their EPT score, i.e., the greater their self-esteem, the higher their EPT score.

Abstract

The number of schoolchildren fluent in English has increased significantly over the past decade. The amount of English lessons per week is one explanation, but media influence is perhaps even more important. Video games are massively marketed to college students. In this study, a survey was conducted to examine the relationship between playing video games and English proficiency. Many students responded to the survey. This included a range of questions about how often and how well video games are played. Researcherss have concluded that video games have a significant impact on language acquisition. Vocabulary and pronunciation were the most helpful areas. Video games are a highly rewarding pastime and create a comfortable and stimulating environment perfect for learning a foreign language.

Abstract

English children's storybooks are real sources for children's language acquisition. A student's preference for reading books is determined by their teachers, who should be able to convey English subjects via a variety of media, including children's storybooks. The majority of English teachers in elementary schools are graduates of the English Education Study Program (EESP) who have completed the Teaching English for Young Learners (TEYL) subject. Thus, this study aims to implement an online learning application known as storyweaver.org.in in Teaching English Young Learners (TEYL) subject for EESP who are teachers want-to-be in the future. The qualitative method is employed here. Overall, the findings showed that planning, implementing, and evaluating can be three stages in using storyweaver.org.in in a classroom. Creating and using storybooks occurred to improve Foreign Language skills and cultural customs for young learners who find that storybooks are simple and pleasing methods to learn their culture.

Abstract

This current study aimed to find out lexical and grammatical errors in Indonesian to English translation texts made by Indonesian EFL learners in a private senior high school in Lampung. A qualitative case study design was adopted in this research. Documentation and literature review were used as the research instruments. To obtain the data, the researchers used 15 simple sentences and a short text in Indonesian. A total of 25 students participated as the sample in this research. The results suggested that there was a total of 402 errors made by the students and the students made more grammatical errors than lexical errors. Regardless of the discrepancy in students’ CEFR level, the most frequent errors found in students’ translations were omissions (97 items), confusion of sense relations (73 items), misformations (46 items), and distortions (40 items). After identifying the errors, the researchers also attempted to describe the possible sources of errors to fill the gap in previous studies. Based on the analysis, the possible factors influencing the errors were the transfer of phonological system, transfer of lexico-semantic errors, transfer of morphological elements, transfer of grammatical elements, transfer of stylistic and cultural elements in interlingual errors, and communication strategy-based errors and learning strategy-based errors in intralingual errors. HIGHLIGHTS: Both intralingual and interlingual errors played essential roles in influencing students to commit errors when translating texts from Indonesian into English. The students committed more grammatical errors than lexical errors. It is evident that errors are rule-governed and systematic in nature, meaning that the errors committed by the students are not randomly produced but are systematic deviations of patterns in the input of language norms in which the learners have been exposed or have learned.

Abstract

Jagung marning Mesuji merupakan usaha di bawah Usaha Mikro, Kecil dan Menengah berada pada kategori usaha mikro yang bergerak di bidang penjualan makanan ringan. Beraneka ragam cemilan ringan seperti jagung marning masih banyak diminati, tidak hanya untuk sekedar cemilan ataupun makanan selingan saat santai dirumah. Kondisi seperti ini dapat dijadikan sebagai peluang usaha untuk menekuni pembuatan makanan tradisional. Melihat keadaan tersebut, sehingga tersedia peluang bisnis yang sangat besar, yaitu bisnis usaha mendirikan usaha jagung marning. Permasalahan utama pada mitra yaitu pihak UMKM Marning Mesuji belum adanya kemasan marning menggunakan vakum dan penggunaan penyerap oksigen (oxygen absorber), kemasan yang digunakan belum menarik untuk dijual di toko ataupun supermarket, kemasan belum tersedia berbagai jenis ukuran dan branding yang belum dikenal banyak masyarakat luar karna kurangnya marketing. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian agar tercapai solusi dan luaran yang ditawarkan dalam pelaksanaan program PKM ini, yaitu: perencanaan, pelaksanaan, monitoring dan pelaporan. Solusi yang ditawarkan oleh tim pengusul Program Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) kepada mitra yaitu dalam menyelesaikan masalah yaitu mengadakan Teknologi packaging vakum dan penggunaan penyerap oksigen dapat mempertahankan kualitas jagung maring yang telah dibuat, adanya kemasan yang lebih menjual dan desain yang menarik dan adanya aplikasi digital marketing masyarakat luar akan lebih mengenal UMKM Marning Mesuji.
