Abstract

In this study, activated carbon was prepared using hydrochar derived from oil palm shell through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), and activated by 5% kalium hydroxide (KOH). The activation process was carried out using a temperature of 700 °C - 800 °C, with activation time of 60-120 minutes. The parameters of the activation process were optimised by response surface methodology (RSM). The central composite design (CCD) is used to determine the effect of activation temperature and activation time on some responses i.e. proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, methylene blue number, iodine number, electrical conductivity, yield percentage, and some gas pollutants adsorption. The results showed that almost all of activated charcoal met the technical standard of activated charcoal of SNI 06-3730-1995 for moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, iodine number, and methylene blue number. The optimum conditions for the activation process involving the response observed were at 787.85 °C for 116.52 minutes

Abstract

Physical and mechanical properties of ply bamboo made from various bamboo species and adhesive type were studied. Bamboo species used in this study were tali (Gigantochoa apus), andong (Gigantochloa verticillata), and betung (Dendrocalamus asper). Five types of adhesives were used for the experiment, namely methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI), phenol formaldehyde (PF), melamine formaldehyde (MF), urea formaldehyde (UF), and poly vinyl acetate (PVAC). Three layer of ply bamboo with (40x40x0,4) cm3 in size was made by weight spread of adhesive 200 g m-2, compression temperature at 140 ºC for MDI and PF, 110 ºC for MF and UF, and room temperature for PVAc adhesives, with specific pressure of 15 kg cm-2 for five minutes. Especially for PVAc, cold compression was carried out using a clamp for 24 h. Fundamental properties of ply bamboo was tested according to SNI 01-5008.7-1999. The results showed that the development dimension of the ply bamboo from the largest to the smallest was in the side of thick, wide, and long, while for timber and plywood were in the side orientation of tangential (width), radial (thick), and longitudinal (long). The best physical and mechanical properties of ply bamboo were obtained from betung bamboo using MDI adhesive.Key words: melamine formaldehyde, methylene diphenyl isocyanate, phenol formaldehyde, ply bamboo, poly vinyl acetate

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the properties of particleboard made from mixtures of jatropha fruit hulls (JFH) and wood particle in several mixture ratios. JFH, and mangium wood (Acacia mangium Wild) particle were untreated and treated with 1% acetic acid solution for 24 h. Urea formaldehyde (UF) resin with 10% resin content (SC: 63%) was used as binder. The ratio of JFH and wood particles were set at 100:0, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, and 0:100. The target density of particleboard was set at 0.70 g cm-3. The temperature and pressure of hot pressing were set at 130 ºC and 2.544 N mm-2 for 10 minutes. The physical and mechanical properties of particleboard were evaluated according to JIS A 5908-2003 standard. The result indicated that addition of untreated mangium wood particle onto JFH particles improved mechanical properties of board especially modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) parameters. However, the internal bond (IB) parameter was found to decrease with addition of wood particle. The higher amount of wood particle added resulted in the better the MOR and MOE parameters. Addition of acetic acid treated mangium wood particle onto JFH particleboard resulted in lower physical and mechanical properties.Key words: Jatropha curcas, fruit hulls, particleboard, wood particle

Abstract

This study is an attempt to evaluate surface roughness of commercially manufactured particleboard in Indonesia. Four different types of particleboard panels were used to measure their surface roughness on a stylus type of profilometer. Three roughness parameters, namely average roughness (Ra), mean peak-to-valley height (Rz), and maximum roughness (Rmax) were employed to quantify roughness of the samples.  Panel type-D had the roughest surface characteristics with an average Ra value of 14.20 µm while panel type-A had the smoothest corresponding value of 6.13 µm. Panel types C and D had relatively rough surface as compared to surface of typical commercially manufactured particleboard panels due to having large particles on the surface layers. In further studies surface roughness of such samples could be investigated following a sequence of sanding process to improve their surface qualities.

Abstract

The nondestructive testing using stress wave velocity method is known as most important tool to be used in quality control purposes. The aim of this study was to investigate the stress wave velocity (SWV) and to determine correlation between its velocity and dynamic MOE on static bending strength properties (MOE and MOR) of wood wool cement particleboards (WWCB). Thirty six WWCB particleboards from 3 tropical fast growing species (Paraserianthes falcataria, Maesopsis eminii, and Acacia mangium) and three different particleboards density of 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0 g cm-3 were made in this study. SWV value was determined using stress wave timer and it used to measure dynamic MOE. The measurement results of static bending strength method (MOEs and MOR) and by stress wave method were compared. The result showed the higher density of CBWW the higher of stress wave velocity. The WWCB particleboard of sengon possessed the highest value for both SWV and MOR. The dynamic MOE measured by stress wave method was about 80% higher than that static test. The good correlations were found between SWV and static MOE, MOR and it was statistically significant for linear regression model developed.Key words: fast growing species, nondestructive testing, static bending strength, stress wave velocity, wood wool cement particleboard

Abstract

Wood from plantation forests can be used to make glued laminated lumber (glulam) products for structural applications. Wood from two species, namely pine (Pinus merkusii) and jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba), and polyurethane and tannin mahogany adhesives (glue spread 200 g m-2) were used to manufacture glulams. The aim of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of glulam made from pine and jabon woods. Wood densities of pine and jabon were 0.71 and 0.43 g cm-3, respectively. The glulams consisted of three layers of the same wood species, and samples were (3×6×120) cm3 in thickness, width, and length, respectively. The physical and mechanical properties of glulam were tested according to Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) 234-2007. The results showed that glulam made from pine met the standard for modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture (MOR) values. Glulam made from jabon wood fulfilled the standard for MOR, shear strength, and hot- and cold-water delamination tests. In the formaldehyde emission test, jabon glulam fulfilled the F*** (low emission) standard and pine glulam met the F**** (very low emission) standard according to JAS 234-2007.

Abstract

Striped catfish tetraploid induction through heat shock that carried out in this study is not intended to produce on growth fries. But to form a broodstock to produce triploid on growth fries through cross breeding without any physical shock induction process. The fries from the heat shock induction in the previous study were screened or selected by observing the maximum number of nucleoli in fin cells. The number of tetraploid individuals used in the performance test was 105 which were placed in three different concrete tanks. The results showed that the growth of tetraploid striped catfish was more significant than diploid with a difference in the daily weight percentage about 0.497% and 0.158% for length but insignificant differences in FCR and SR.In gonadal development based on histological observations, it was shown that each tetraploid and diploid both male and female striped catfish were at the same level of gonadal maturity.Female gonads were at the previtellogenic oocytes and vitellogenic oocytes, but males are dominated at the stage of spermatocytes and spermatozoa. This histology also shows us that the female gonad was still at the development stage, while the male had entered the mature stage and ready to be spawned.

Abstract

The high of pH of jatropha fruit hulls causes the negative properties of particleboard made from this material. Adjusting the particle acidity and pressing conditions (temperature and time) is among the technical modifications available to improve this particleboard’s properties. Particle acidity has been adjusted in a previous research project, and immersing the particles in acetic acid was found to be the best treatment in this preliminary research. In order to improve the particleboard’s properties, an experiment was conducted to determine the best pressing temperature and time. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of pressing temperature and time on the physical and mechanical properties of the board. Jatropha fruit hulls were immersed in 1% acetic acid solution for 24 hours. UF resin was used as the adhesive in the amount of 10%. The pressing temperatures and times used in this research were 110 °C, 120 °C, and 130 °C for 8 and 10 minutes, respectively. The particleboards were tested to determine their physical and mechanical properties according to JIS A 5908-2003. The result showed that pressing at 130 °C for 10 minutes resulted in the best physical and mechanical properties. Increasing the pressing temperature at a constant time or increasing the pressing time at a constant temperature caused the particleboard to exhibit decreased water absorption. The thickness swelling and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the particleboard did not fulfil JIS A 5908-2003.
