Abstract

The objectives of this studywas to find out the cultural values of Batak Toba in the wedding ceremony. The study was conducted by using textual research. The data of this study were taken from Hula-hula utterances in the wedding ceremony of Batak Toba. It was focusing on giving tradition Batak Toba cloth worn covering shoulder event (mangulosi) to the groom’s family (boru). The data were analyzed by using theory of Harahap and Siahaan (1987). There were nine cultural values found in the wedding ceremony. They were kinship, religion, extended family, respect, wealth, modernization, justice, nurture, and conflict.

Abstract

This research deals with the analysis of language functions on oral tradition's Tangis in Karonese. The aim of this research is to: (a) describe how language functions are realized on oral tradition's Tangis in Karonese and (b) explain the reason why language functions are used on oral tradition's Tangis in Karonese. This research was conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research is taken from the utterances spoken by the pilgrims when did the Tangis. There are five language functions found in Tangis from the six language functions proposed by Roman Jakobson. They were referential 54,1%, conative 32,4%, emotive 8,1%, phatic 2,7 %, and poetic 2,7%. Besides the language functions found, there are also the reasons the language functions are used on oral tradition's Tangis in Karonese. They were thoughts, feelings, needs, and observation.

Abstract

Nowadays, English become a language that can give a significant impact in many aspects such as education and communication. Therefore people are demanded to master in language including students. For example researcher finding at class x of SMAN 6 Medan student have low competence in writing skill. This study aimed to Develop English Writing Material Using EGRA Technique of Descriptive Text for Grade X. The subject of this research was students’ grade X MIA 2 of SMAN 6 Medan consists of 34 students. Tomlinso (1990) state the EGRA is an effective technique to teach grammar in writing sentence. The letter standing for Exposure, Generalization, Reinforcement, and Application. This research used the model of Research and Development (R&D)of Brog and Gall (2003) has six stages: there are (1) Gathering information, (2) Analyzing data, (3) Designing new writing material using EGRA, (4) Evaluating or validating new writing material by experts, (5) Revising, (6) Final product. The instruments of data collection were syllabus, questioner and interview. The data was gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questioner to the students. The first design writing material of this research consists of three units: “hi iam arief” (describing people), “Mount Lesuer National Park” (describing place), “Water Castle” (describing bulding). The score of validating from expert there are: (1) English lecture, the score of content is 25, score of language is 12, score of presentation is 27,and score of graphic is 9  and the average of score material assessment were 3,17 in categorize good. (2) English teacher English lecture, the score of content is 26, score of language is 12, score of presentation is 25,and score of graphic is 12  and the average of score material assessment were 3,26 in categorize very good. Based on the result of the validation of the experts, there are two aspects that needed to revised such as to revise some grammatical mistakes and unclear the exercise. The final product of writing material consists of three units: “hi I am arief” (describing people), “Mount Lesuer National Park” (describing place), “Water Castle” (describing building). In each unit have four sections provided there are Exposure, Training, Grammar and WritingKey words: writing skill, EGRA  technique, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) To found out what types of verbal irony used in the novel, 2) To found out the literal meaning of the verbal irony, 3) To found out the realization of the verbal irony. The source of data was the novel, and the data were taken from the dialogue in the novel. The study conducted by using qualitative research. The data were analyzed by using Sperber and Wilson’s theory to classify the types of verbal irony. There were 13 data found and there were two types of verbal irony used in the novel spoken by the two main characters. The types were ironical understatement (92%) and ironical interjection (8%). The literal meaning and the realization of the verbal irony were known based on the context in the dialogue.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the semiotic meaning in Lapo Batak ornaments in Medan. The data of this study were taken from the interpretation of Batak Toba people who live in Medan in interpreting their cultural symbols. In analyzing the data, the research was conducted by using qualitative method. The result showed the semiotic meaning and how the cultural values were realized in Lapo Batak ornaments. The data were analyzed by using Roland Barthes’ order of signification theory; denotation, connotation, and myth to emphasize the interaction between the sign with the personal cultural experience of the viewers, and the interaction between convention in the sign with the conventions experienced and expected by viewers. The researcher found that the interpretations of the personal cultural experience from the viewers were still far from the Batak Toba convention (myth) in interpreting the ornaments.

Abstract

This study was aimed at identifying the types and the dominant type of the Politeness Maxim of Character’s Utterances in Wuthering Heights Novel by Emily Bronthe and the reason why it used in the novel. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from a novel written by Emily Bronthe entitled Wuthering Heights. The results showed that there are 6 types of politeness maxim namely tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim totalling 64 utterances with the dominant type is agreement maxim totalling 22 utterances (34,37%). There was only 1 type of politeness maxim that not used in the novel which is modesty maxim. The reason why politeness maxim used by the main character was that to politely express his message and intimate the relation to other characters.

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether students’ achievement trough using Project Based Learning is higher than trough discussion method in writing procedure text. The research was conducted by experimental research used in two groups. They are experimental use Project Based Learning and control use Discussion Method. The subject of this were the students of SMP Negeri 2 Babalan class VII-2 and VII-3 consisted of 30 students for each class. To collecting the data was taken from writing test. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t-obs was 4.16 with degree of freedom (df) = 58 at the level of significance p(0.05) = 2,000. It means that t-obs is higher than t-table. It was found that teaching procedure text by using Project Based Learning is higher than discussion method. Project Based Learning has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.   Key words: Project Based Learning, Writing achievement, Procedure Text.

Abstract

This study deals with verbal interaction between teacher and students at SMP Swasta Pahlawan Nasional. The objectives of this study were to find out the category of verbal  interaction  between  the  teacher  and  the  students  in  the classroom, and the dominant category of verbal interaction in the classroom between teacher and students. Data of the research was taken from 28 students of eight grades which took an English class involved one English teacher who taught in the class. The data in this research collected by using interview and videotaping. The result of the study showed that both the teachers and the students were aware and understood that interaction was important in English learning. They also understood that to be able to interact well, they needed to practice. But, the understanding was not supported by what they did in classroom. The teacher did not give much interactive activity in class. It seemed that the teachers did not believe in the students' competence. The students were not active in practicing their English by asking questions or expressing their idea or opinion, and the most dominant interaction between teacher and students were direct teacher interaction. Keywords : verbal interaction, teacher and students

Abstract

The thesis deals with the dominant category used by teacher and the students during English classroom interaction, and the percentage of teacher’s talk and students’ talk during English classroom interaction using Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS). Moreover, this study used descriptive qualitative design .The data of this study were utterances between English teacher and students during English classroom in XI-2 IPA of SMA Negeri 11 Medan.The instruments for data collection were observation tally sheet and video recording. The result showed all of the categories used in the teaching and learning process. It found from the percentage of all categories , the dominant category used by the teacher was Giving Direction (40.41% ). In the other hand the dominant category used by students was Student Talk-Response (57.60%). In addition, the percentage of Teacher Talk was 59.76%, and the percentage of Student Talk  was 36.72% during classroom interaction in English lessons .It showed, the teacher more active and dominant talking than the students during verbal classroom interaction.Key words: Verbal Classroom Interaction, Teacher Talk, Student Talk, Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at investigating the effect of applying Brainstorming Technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. The population of this study was  the Grade 8 students of of SMP Negeri 3 Aek Kuo, Labuhan Batu Utara. There were 8 classes which contained around 240 students. 2 classes out of eight classes were randomly taken as the sample of the research. The sample was divided into two groups. The first group (30 students) as the experimental group, while the rest (30 students) as the control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Brainstorming Technique., and the Control Group was taught by using Conventional Technique. The instrument for collecting the data was essay test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer used the inter-rater formula. The result of the study showed that the reliability of the test was 0.55. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students of the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level significance 0.5 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 the  is 4,650. while the  is 1,671.  Therefore, the hypothesis  is accepted. It means that that Brainstorming Technique significantly affects the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.   Key words: Brainstorming, Writing, Descriptive Paragraph
