Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, the amount of family speaking more than one language recently increase in intensity. They not only speak their official language and mother tongue for daily communication, but do they also be fluent in another foreign language for example English. Purpose: The present study closely examines spontaneous interactions between parents and children and explore the family members’ efforts to shape children’s foreign language use and learning outcomes. The focus is on the parental discourse strategies which presents a sequential analysis of the child’s language mixing in interaction which each parent and how the parent reacts to that mixing. Design and methods: To obtain the data, open-ended questionnaires were sent out to five families in which the children actively use English in their daily conversation. Using Lanza’s (1997) parental discourse strategies. Results: the result reveals that parents mostly follow code-switching in negotiating and enforcing their children to maintain their communication in English.

Abstract

Background: There was a different technique when the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework came into effect, from elements, Fairclough analysis frameworks that explained the historical side of text production to the impact on society and the framework of CDA van Dijk that characterized the cognition of the producer of the text (journalist). Purpose: This study tries to find elements of cognition and sociocultural from the article Evaluation of Evaluasi Pemilu Serentak Mendesak from Tempo newspaper with the framework model of CDA Fairclough and van Dijk model. Design and methods: This research uses a qualitative approach with data collection methods using library methods. Content analysis techniques. Results: The authors found several techniques in dissecting the text; 1. CDA Fairclough model focuses more on changes in social patterns, 2. Abstract

Evaluating the learning outcomes of a certain course implementation can improve the quality of education. This study is focused on Indonesian EFL undergraduates’ perceptions of the relationships between teacher performance, technological resources, online project-based learning (OPJBL), and ESP learning outcomes. Participants of the study have attended English for specific purposes (ESP) online courses during school closures due to Covid-19. A survey was addressed to 350 undergraduates after a one-semester implementation of the OPJBL. The students were requested to rate their perceptions on validated items using a 7-point Likert-type scale for the data collection. The data were modelled and computed through partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The main findings of the study revealed that teacher performance and technological resources were significant in predicting OPJBL. Similarly, OPJBL was found to play a significant role in affecting ESP learning outcomes. Teacher performance and technological resources were also correlated to ESP learning outcomes. Significant differences were found among students’ locations for all variables. The findings highlight the benefits of the SEM approach for establishing the proposed framework and assessing the links between variables concerning the OPJBL and learning outcomes.

Abstract

The background of this study relates to an exploration of the role of technology in the classroom learning process, especially in terms of shifting the role of the teacher as the main instructor. The rapid and ever-changing development of technology has had a huge impact on education systems around the world, such as ChatGPT. This study will conduct an in-depth analysis of ChatGPT's ability to replace the role of teachers in the classroom learning process. This research is qualitative in nature. The methodology used to collect data includes attentive listening and careful documentation of relevant information, which is then subjected to analytical procedures such as data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study arrived at the conclusion that in the context of using ChatGPT in learning, it should be noted that technology can only be a tool and cannot replace the role of the teacher entirely. Therefore, it is necessary to integrate technology in learning in an appropriate and effective way and develop competence for teachers in managing learning with technology.

Abstract

Background: Science learning holds paramount significance in the advancement of science and technology. Two pivotal theories, falsification theory and the constructivism paradigm, profoundly influence the landscape of science education. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of falsification theory and the constructivism paradigm on the development of science learning. Falsification theory, pioneered by Karl Popper, underscores the necessity of rigorous testing and validation of scientific hypotheses, forming the bedrock for the evolution of scientific knowledge. Conversely, the constructivism paradigm accentuates the active role individuals play in constructing knowledge, emphasizing a student-centered approach that involves collaborative learning, and problem-solving. Design and methods: In this study, we delve into the implications of falsification theory and the constructivism paradigm in shaping science education. Falsification theory advocates for empirical proof and stringent testing of scientific hypotheses, while the constructivism paradigm promotes active student involvement in building their comprehension of scientific concepts. The study investigates how the integration of these two approaches can foster robust science learning environments, encouraging critical thinking, exploration, and profound understanding. Results: The synthesis of falsification theory and the constructivism paradigm in science learning holds promise for cultivating a rich educational experience. By finding a delicate balance between rigorous empirical testing and providing opportunities for active student engagement, educators can create a profound and meaningful learning journey for students. This integrated approach not only instills an appreciation for the scientific method but also nurtures a deep understanding of science concepts, ultimately shaping students into critical thinkers with a genuine enthusiasm for scientific exploration.
