Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is the primary mineral component of bone and tooth tissue. Submicron-sized HAp offers enhanced osteoconductive properties, enabling it to serve effectively as a scaffold to support osteoblast activity and new bone formation. In this study, HAp was synthesized from calcium nitrate tetrahydrate using the precipitation method. The main variable investigated was the pH, adjusted by the addition of ammonium hydroxide, which influenced the yield and Ca/P ratio of the resulting HAp. The synthesized HAp was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS Flame), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The optimal HAp product was obtained at pH 11 and sintered at 800 °C, yielding a Ca content of 2.56% and a P content of 4.28%, resulting in a Ca/P ratio of 1.6719; consistent with the theoretical stoichiometric value of 1.67. This was supported by XRD analysis, which showed the highest intensity peak at 2θ = 31.74°, confirming the presence of hydroxyapatite. SEM analysis revealed a particle size of 460.8 nm and a porosity of 20.15%. These findings demonstrate that hydroxyapatite can be successfully synthesized via precipitation using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate under optimal conditions of pH > 11.

Abstract

The organosolv method of delignification uses organic solvents such as ethanol to remove lignin from biomass. The aims of this research to determine mass transfer coefficient in the delignification process of coffee husk. The White rot fungus, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, was used to degrade lignin component in incubation process of coffee husk biomass, then acid hydrolysis process was carried out by using citric acid to degrade the polysaccharides content (cellulose and hemicellulose). The lignin removal process was conducted at temperature of 50°C, an ethanol concentration of 25%, stirring rates (500-700 rpm) and stirring time (30-180 minutes). The effects of mass transfer were evaluated for variation of stirring rates and stirring time. The results of mass transfer coefficient ranged on 0.0550/s and 0.6710/s. This result indicates an increase in stirring time and stirring rate leads to a higher mass transfer coefficient.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a major component of bone and tooth tissues used to repair and rebuild malfunctioning bone. Hydroxyapatite synthesis widely utilizes materials that have a high calcium content. In this study, limestone was used as an economical calcium precursor. Gelatin was added in situ during the sol-gel process to improve biomechanical properties such as porosity and reduce the particle size. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of in situ gelatin addition at different concentrations (30%, 40% and 50%) and pH variations (10, 11 and 12) during the sol–gel synthesis of limestone-based hydroxyapatite, focusing on its influence on porosity, particle size, and Ca/P ratio to evaluate its potential for biomedical applications. Highest yield was obtained when the hydroxyapatite was prepared using 30% gelatin concentration with pH 12. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of the characteristic functional groups of hydroxyapatites, namely phosphate (PO₄³⁻), carbonate (CO₃²⁻), and hydroxyl (OH⁻). SEM-EDX analysis revealed granular and irregular crystal morphology with particle size below 600 nm, while image analysis of SEM-EDX micrographs using ImageJ estimated the highest apparent porosity of 60.73% at pH 10. These results indicate that the in situ addition of gelatin during the sol-gel process successfully produced hydroxyapatite with biomechanical properties suitable for implant applications, especially in teeth, with optimal porosity and adequate particle size to support cell growth.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral that makes up bones and teeth so that it has a level of similarity with the mineral parts of bones and can be used as an alternative bone substitute material. As an alternative material for bone substitution, hydroxyapatite has a fairly high economic value and is still dominated by imports from foreign countries. In an effort to reduce the level of imports of hydroxyapatite, research was carried out on green mussel shells as a source of calcium for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was carried out using the sol-gel method with raw materials for calcium precursors obtained from green mussel shells and varied concentrations of phosphoric acid (0.1 M, 0.5 M, 1 M; 1.5 M; and 2 M). Based on the analysis of the hydroxyapatite product produced using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry analysis, it was found that the ratio of Calcium-Phosphate (Ca/P) for H3PO4 concentrations was 0.1 M, 0.5 M, 1 M; 1.5M; and 2 M respectively by 1.73; 1.70; 1.67; 1.63; and 1.61. In addition, based on the results of the Fourier Transform Infra Red analysis, a random sample also found a Ca-O group; PO43; and OH- which is the main group of Hydroxyapatite and from SEM analysis the crystal morphology is known to be spherical, uneven and agglomerated so that in this study the synthesis of Hydroxyapatite using the sol-gel method was successfully carried out..
