Abstract

ABSTRACT  This community service activity aimed to improve the technical compliance of qurban animal slaughter based on halal principles and animal welfare standards at Darul Ulum Mosque, Amban Village, West Manokwari District, Manokwari Regency. A case study approach with participatory techniques was employed, involving certified Halal Slaughterers (Juleha), qurban committees, university students, and experts. The activities covered antemortem inspection, slaughtering, postmortem examination, and meat distribution. The results showed that the slaughtering process was conducted in accordance with Islamic Sharia principles, ensuring the proper severance of the three main channels efficiently and swiftly. Postmortem inspection revealed parasitic infestations (fasciola hepatica and parampistomon) in several organs, which were handled appropriately following established protocols. Improvements are still needed in animal holding facilities, particularly regarding feed, water supply, and sanitation prior to slaughter. This program significantly enhanced the technical capacity of Juleha and the qurban committee, strengthening the implementation of halalan thayyiban and animal welfare principles at the mosque community level. Keywords: Animal welfare; halal slaughter; Juleha; postmortem inspection; qurban   ABSTRAK Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kepatuhan teknis penyembelihan hewan qurban sesuai prinsip halal dan kesejahteraan hewan (animal welfare) di Masjid Darul Ulum, Kelurahan Amban, Distrik Manokwari Barat, Kabupaten Manokwari. Abstract

ABSTRACT  A livestock contest is a strategic approach that can encourage improvements in maintenance quality and motivate farmers in developing their livestock. This activity was carried out in Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua, involving 30 Indigenous Papuan (OAP) farmers with a total of 50 Bali cattle. After administrative selection and health checks, 34 cattle were assessed based on morphometric parameters, Body Condition Score (BCS), estimated body weight, and maintenance management. The results showed significant variation in livestock performance and the level of adoption of maintenance practices. Farmers’ involvement in the measurement process provided direct educational experiences and increased awareness of the importance of data-based management and livestock breeding selection to improve productivity. In addition to identifying livestock individuals with superior genetic potential, the contest also encouraged a shift in farmers’ mindset toward sustainable livestock development. This model is recommended as a replicable approach for regions with similar socio-economic conditions. Abstract

Agricultural land in Papua suffers from a deficiency of macro-nutrients essential for plant growth. This shortfall is attributed to the prevalence of utisol soil types, which make up 49.21% of the total land area. However, by implementing suitable processing technologies and innovative practices, livestock waste can be transformed into a high-value product. The innovative processing of livestock waste into fertilizer has the potential to enhance soil structure and fulfill the nutritional needs of plants. The Tunas Siaga Livestock Farmer Group and the Tunas Bangsa Youth Organization, facing challenges in the production and marketing of livestock waste products, have been identified as the target partners for this initiative. A field observation study revealed that only 20% of the total livestock waste is currently utilized for composting. The proposed solution involves using livestock waste, supplemented by natural phosphate, to improve product marketability, quality, and quantity. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive training program will be initiated, consisting of the following components: (1) training on processing livestock waste into solid and liquid organic fertilizers, enhanced by Krandalite Phosphate Deposited Soil (KPDS); (2) training in product packaging and marketing. The training program will be delivered through a combination of digital and traditional marketing channels. The effectiveness of this initiative will be assessed through a pretest and posttest administered to participants during the activities. Evaluation results indicate that the innovation involving the inclusion of KPDS in solid and liquid organic fertilizers is likely to be well-received by the target partners. Additionally, evaluation findings demonstrated that most participants experienced a significant increase in knowledge and skills in livestock waste management, with an overall improvement of 64.4%. This increase was evident in the pretest and posttest results, which showed an average score improvement among participants.

Abstract

This study assessed the production performance and technical efficiency of independent broiler farmers in Sorong Regency, Indonesia, using a stochastic frontier framework. The objective of the research is to quantify the influence of major production inputs on output, estimate technical efficiency levels, and evaluate the extent to which inefficiency contributes to variations in broiler performance under open-house production conditions. Primary data were collected from active broiler farmers and analyzed using a Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier production function estimated through maximum likelihood procedures to obtain input elasticities and individual efficiency scores. The results indicated that broiler production performed competitively, with a performance index of 456, low mortality, and an efficient feed conversion ratio. The production frontier estimation showed that day-old chicks and feed were the dominant determinants of output, while medication, electricity, and fuel inputs did not exert statistically significant effects. Average technical efficiency reached 0.89, with 86.6 percent of farmers operating at high-efficiency levels. The gamma parameter of 0.83 indicated that most output variation stemmed from technical inefficiency rather than random disturbances, underscoring the relevance of managerial capacity in shaping production outcomes. The study concludes that improving the quality of biological inputs and strengthening managerial practices is essential for sustaining productivity among independent broiler farmers. The findings provide empirical guidance for technical training programs, input quality improvement, and targeted interventions to enhance production efficiency in eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

Remote regions of Eastern Indonesia face complex food security challenges, particularly in accessing sustainable protein. Frozen chicken has emerged as a potential solution, yet comprehensive analyses of its multi-dimensional role in household food security systems are scarce. This study employs an integrated mixed-methods approach to examine the socio-economic, perceptual, and behavioral determinants of frozen chicken consumption and its implications for food security policy.  A cross-sectional survey (n=131) was complemented with in-depth interviews (n=25) and focus group discussions (n=4) in Fakfak Regency. Advanced statistical analyses, including structural equation modeling (SEM) and cluster analysis, were employed to identify complex relationships and consumer segments. SEM revealed that consumption behavior was directly influenced by perceived quality (β=0.42, p<0.001), accessibility (β=0.38, p<0.001), and price fairness (β=0.29, p=0.003). Cluster analysis identified four distinct consumer segments: "Practical Adopters" (34.4%), "Quality-Sensitive Consumers" (28.2%), "Price-Driven Users" (22.9%), and "Reluctant Acceptors" (14.5%). Qualitative analysis uncovered nuanced perceptions of frozen chicken as both a "lifeline" during shortages and a "compromise" when fresh options are unavailable. Frozen chicken serves as a strategic buffer for food security, but complex consumer perceptions and market dynamics moderate its effectiveness. Policy interventions require segment-specific approaches addressing quality assurance, supply chain reliability, and consumer education.
