Abstract

Low Back Pain (LBP) is a collection of several clinical symptoms that are marked by pain or discomfort in the lower back, which may or may not extend to the legs. Incorrect ergonomics is the primary factor contributing to lower back pain (LBP) among nurses. The objective of this study was to establish a correlation between the extent of ergonomics knowledge and the occurrence of lower back pain (LBP) complaints among nurses who work with hospitalised patients. This study employed a correlational quantitative design, utilising a cross-sectional technique. The sample size for this study consisted of 158 nurses working in the inpatient unit of a private hospital in Indonesia. The sampling technique employed was a total sampling, resulting in a sample size of 158 nurses. The research employed questionnaires that were both valid and trustworthy. The questionnaires assessing knowledge of ergonomics were devised by Bunga et al. (2019), whilst the questionnaire pertaining to low back pain was formulated by Deria (2021). The findings of the Pearson chi-square statistical test indicated a p-value of 0.105, suggesting that there was no statistically significant association between the level of knowledge of ergonomics postures and complaints of low back pain among inpatient nurses. Inpatient nurses have the ability to discover and implement ergonomic postures in their regular tasks. Further research could be undertaken on the elements that can induce low back discomfort.

Abstract

Proficiency in spoken English is commonly seen as avital aspect of language learning. Regrettably, a significant portion of ESP learners exhibit reluctance to engage in oral communication inside the language learning classroom, which can be attributed to various reasons. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the relationship among linguistic factor, psychological factor, and sociocultural factor on nursing students’ hesitancy to engage in oral communication exercises. The data were collected using a questionnaire, while the association between variables was tested using the Gamma statistical test. The participants of this study consisted of second-year nursing students in a private university in Tangerang. The sample was determined using the convenience sampling technique, which yielded a total of 195 respondents. A noteworthy correlation had been observed between the linguistic factors (p-value 0.001), psychological factor (p-value 0.001), and sociocultural factor (p-value 0,004) in connection to nursing students’ hesitancy. The correlation between factors is moderately strong, with the variables of all factors indicating a positive association with reluctance. Consequently, the higher the factors, the greater the nursing students’ willingness to speak English, and vice versa. The lecturers should hence foster a safe and accepting environment in the classroom through fostering connections between themselves and the students.

Abstract

Nursing students learn General English (GE) to prepare them to study English for Nursing as their core subject. The primary goal of GE is to prepare them to be able to talk about daily topics and grammar points including simple past tense which was taught implicitly. In fact, teaching grammar is assumed to be trivial lately as teachers shift to more into English teaching trends. Therefore, it is important to go to the root and find ways to help students with their grammar struggle. This study seeks to find the nursing students’ error in simple past tense through scrutinizing their writing and thus can evaluate the teaching grammar method. The methodology was descriptive quantitative where 50 students’ writing assignments were the data. The errors were identified in the table and were classified based on the error types based on Duly’s surface strategy taxonomy. The errors were then analysed quantitatively to find percentages of the errors. The excerpts from the students’ writing were included in the result to support the analysis. The findings indicate that mis-formation were the biggest errors with 57.59%, mis-ordering with 20.98%, addition with 12.95%, and omission with the smallest error with 8.48%. The analysis indicates that the interlingual and intralingual transfer contribute to these errors made. Thus, there needs to be a reflection on the grammar teaching done in nursing students now. Teachers should focus on helping the students with their grammar difficulties and flexibly switch the teaching implicitly and explicitly to suit the students need.

Abstract

This research aims to disclose the influence of the Korean wave toward the Indonesian beauty standards reflected in the skincare advertisements. A descriptive qualitative method with the approach of critical discourse analysis is employed to obtain the research objective. The media are Viva moisturizer advertisement appeared in the early 2000s, Wardah White Treatment Essence advertisement published in 2019, and Laneige BB Cushion Korean advertisement as a part of intertextuality. The 19 year-publication gaps is deliberately presented to show how the shift of beauty myth takes place. The data taken were in words, phrases, and sentences, which were then analyzed using Fairclough's three-dimensional approach. The results showed that Viva attracted consumers' attention using similes, simple present tense, keywords repetition, and positive adjectives. On the other side, Wardah used hyperbole, possessive pronoun, and scientific terminology to convince the consumers of their product's superiority, in line with Laneige's advertisement. Regarding the discursive features, these three advertisements were similar in that they used logos, flattery, puffery, and positive image representation. Lastly, the analysis of social practice indicated that the influence of the Korean wave was clearly seen on Wardah's commercial, which portrayed beauty as Laneige did. They tried shaping consumers' beliefs that beauty means having a white, flawless, and glowing face. Thus, the beauty myth had changed from the previous era. This resembles Bourdieu's notion of field, capital, and Doxa.

Abstract

Academic stress is a common phenomenon in academic environments, particularly among first-year students. Several students have reported that academic stress can influence their learning motivation, as evidenced by findings from this study. This research aims to examine the relationship between academic stress and academic motivation among first-year nursing students at a private university in Indonesia. A non-experimental quantitative research method with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The study population consisted of 419 first-year nursing students, with a sample size of 205 students selected through simple random sampling. The research instruments included the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA) by Sun et al. (2011) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) by Vallerand et al. (1992). The ESSA instrument demonstrated high validity and reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.932. The AMS questionnaire, validated and adapted into Indonesian by Natalya (2018), assessed intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as well as amotivation, showing robust psychometric properties (RMSEA ≤ 0.08; GFI ≥ 0.9; CR ≥ 0.7; α ≥ 0.7). Data analysis utilized Pearson correlation tests, revealing a significant relationship between academic stress and academic motivation (p = 0.001, p < 0.05). The findings indicate that increased academic stress can enhance academic motivation, highlighting the concept of positive stress (eustress). Future studies are encouraged to design interventions aimed at helping students balance academic stress and motivation using experimental methods.

Abstract

Engaging students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly large ones, remains a persistent challenge due to rigid structures and limited opportunities for interaction. While gamification is commonly used to boost engagement, its competitive elements can trigger anxiety and hinder participation, especially among less confident learners. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods design to explore the effectiveness of Padlet—a non-competitive, collaborative digital platform—in promoting student engagement. A total of 202 first-year nursing students participated in a 14-week course in which Padlet was integrated into classroom activities. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with selected participants. Quantitative findings indicated high levels of agreement across five engagement dimensions: motivation, interactivity, learning opportunities, ease of use, and language learning support. Qualitative analysis revealed four dominant themes: Padlet's social media-like appeal, its role in facilitating safe and active collaboration, the creation of an interactive classroom atmosphere, and peer learning through shared content. Students reported increased willingness to participate, reduced anxiety, and greater comfort in expressing ideas. Padlet functioned as a low-anxiety, learner-centered space that encouraged participation, particularly among shy or low-proficiency students. While it may not directly improve language proficiency, its affective benefits foster a positive foundation for language development. Padlet offers an inclusive, psychologically safe alternative to competitive gamification, making it a valuable tool for enhancing student engagement in large EFL classrooms.
