Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the process and perception of students in the use of wordwall media to enrich the size of students' vocabulary in the EFL class. The research used a qualitative case study method in conducting the research. Participants of this study is students of the seventh grade at Junior High School, students aged about 12-13 years who will be selected as research subjects. The data collection technique in this study is observation checklist and interview, the data analysis technique used in this study is a descriptive analysis method. The result of this study is The results showed that word wall media is the right medium in enriching students' vocabulary and helping students find out the names of objects in class according to their vocabulary and make it easier for students to memorize vocabulary. Students have no difficulty in using wordwall media in vocabulary learning, and they are very enthusiastic about feeling very happy, enjoy, not bored because the word wall media with colorful writing is pasted on the wall. Most seventh graders have positive responses about the use of word walls in learning vocabulary in junior high school. This can be seen based on pictures and words that are matched by students appropriately this media makes students very interested and easy to memorize some difficult vocabulary and also students' perception of word wall media is that students can enrich vocabulary and more easily understand it some vocabulary

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine how well students were engaging in games of "show and tell" when learning English. To collect the data and respond to the research questions that formed the foundation for this research, this study conducted a qualitative research with descriptive case study. At junior high school students from a 9th grade class, who were between the ages of 14 and 15 at the time of the research, were used as the sample, along with six other students. By observing students, the data for this study were gathered. A checklist of observations was used to get the instruments. In this study, the theory of Miles and Huberman was used to analyze the data. According to this theory, analysis consists of three flows of activity: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Data analysis and evaluation of student engagement revealed that there was active and positive student interaction. This may be observable in the way they develop effective communication and self-confidence in front of the class, pay attention to their friends when they take turns explaining objects in front of the class, and grow more engaged about studying English. keywords: Speaking, Engagement, Show and Tell.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui secara ilmiah (1) bagaimana frekuensi menonton tayangan media televisi bagi peserta didik di tingkat SMKN, (2) bagaimana akhlak peserta didik di tingkat SMKN serta, (3) bagaimana frekuensi menonton tayangan media televisi peserta didik hubungannya dengan akhlak mereka di tingkat SMKN. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif korelasionner dengan metode explanatory research. Adapun teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah angket, wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Sedangkan teknis analisis datanya dilakukan dengan dua tahap, yaitu analisis deskriptif dan regresi linier sederhana. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa (1) skor relatan frekuensi menonton tayangan media televisi  peserta didik di tingkat SMKN, sebesar 64 dengan kategori kurang setuju (2) skor relatan akhlak mereka, sebesar 52 dengan kategori kurang setuju.(3) Adapun hasil analisis pada pengujian statistik inferensial yaitu uji t diperoleh hasil uji hipotesis bahwa t0 = 16,705 dan t tabel = 1,662. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara frekuensi menonton tayangan media televisi terhadap akhlak peserta didik di tingkat SMKN di Bandung. Oleh karena itu, guru dan orang tua harus dapat mendampingi dan mengarahkan peserta didik untuk dapat memilih tayangan media televisi yang baik.

Abstract

The aim of this study focusses on the use of flipped classroom model in grammar learning: students’ responses. This study used a qualitative approach and case study as a research design. This research took place in one of junior high school at Klari, Karawang. The participants of this study were an EFL Teacher and six seventh grade students. This research used observation and interview as data collection technique. The observation was conducted in three times. For the interview session, the researcher interviewed six students where these students were two people who had low level, two people who had intermediate level and two people who had high level in English. The findings of the research showed that the use of flipped classroom model in grammar learning has 3 activity phases, namely before the class, in class, and post class activity. In addition, the findings of this research showed that students’ responses towards the use of the flipped classroom model in learning grammar are positive. The students’ responses are presented into four categories, namely flipped classroom makes grammar learning easier, flipped classroom makes students more active in the class, flipped classroom stimulating students' autonomous learning, and flipped classroom makes grammar learning interesting. Abstract

A research study that raises issues regarding the challenges faced by students regarding the online learning system due to the pandemic. There are two participants who will be interviewed in this study. Semi-structured interview is the type of interview chosen in this research study there will be three indicators in making interview questions; emotional experiences, the challenges faced, how to deal with the problems. Phenomenology is the research design chosen by the researcher to conduct this research study, and thematic analysis is the method used to analyze the data. From the data that has been taken, the results describe that students are not happy to take part in online learning, because of several obstacles felt by students. Keywords:  Students’ Perception, English Learning Strategies, COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This study aims to determine the extent to which students understand English learning by using Edmodo in Flipped classroom media. To find out students' experiences in speaking skills, there are many features that can be used or utilized by Edmodo in Flipped classroom. The method used is Narrative inquiry with a qualitative approach. The sample used in this study was only 3 students taken from one class. The data analysis used consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. First, Emodo media is very helpful in the online learning process. With Edmodo media, students can easily access and carry out learning activities, especially discussing speaking skills in the Flipped classroom. Second, for the past 1 year several schools have implemented a flipped classroom system where students are required to take part in online and offline teaching and learning activities. And finally, Edmodo media can make students independent in learning English. Students can learn on their own without the help of a teacher when they understand the use of Edmodo, students can immediately practice their speaking skills with the features available on Edmodo.

Abstract

  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengalaman siswa kelas 12 dalam pembelajaran tata bahasa secara mandiri. Data diambil dari 6 siswa di SMAN 1 Karawang semester I tahun ajaran 2022/2023. Pendekatan kualitatif digunakan dalam melakukan penelitian ini. Hasil yang diperoleh berdasarkan wawancara semi terstruktur dan instrumentasi kerangka naratif dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 9 konsep kunci yang dibuat oleh Oswalt (2003) dibagi menjadi 3 kelompok besar; situasi belajar yang mengandung kemungkinan, dukungan, dan kerjasama, kemudian atribut siswa yang meliputi proses SDL, kemauan, dan isi. Hal ini menunjukkan dengan menggunakan berbagai media yang selain dari guru memberi, membantu mereka mengalami proses belajar yang lebih menyenangkan dari biasanya. Dan selanjutnya, siswa menjadi sadar bahwa metode dan media pembelajaran yang tepat dan menarik berperan sangat penting dalam membantu mereka memahami materi grammar. Dan temuan lain menunjukkan bahwa ada satu siswa yang berada pada tingkat satu keterampilan SDL, satu siswa pada tingkat 2, dan sisanya empat siswa pada tingkat tiga. Sebagai rekomendasi, penulis menyarankan pada penelitian selanjutnya untuk menambahkan instrumen tes dalam menemukan tingkat keterampilan siswa SDL dengan tujuan membuat penelitian lebih baik dan lebih dapat diverifikasi.

Abstract

Pronunciation is essential in oral communication in order to convey messages effectively. Nevertheless, pronunciation can be challenging to master for EFL learners. One of the reason is because the different phonetic system between the native language and English as the target language. Particularly for Indonesian EFL learners, some research found that one of the difficulties that the learners encountered in learning English pronunciation is learners are unfamiliar with some sounds in English, since it does not exist in Bahasa Indonesia. Among them are consonant cluster, consonant cluster is scarcely found in Bahasa Indonesia. For example the word ‘thirst’ consist of three consonants, while Indonesian EFL learners are unfamiliar with this form.  This study aims to analyze the performance of EFL learners in pronouncing English consonant cluster. The study only analyze the production of 5 English consonant cluster, they are [θ], [ʃ], [gh], [ld], and [st]. The subject of this study is 5 students in vocational high school. The students was given a text that they have to read and record. Then the researcher analyze the students’ pronunciation of the consonant clusters. The research show that there are some errors that the students made while pronouncing the consonant clusters.   Keywords:  Pronunciation; Consonant Cluster; Error

Abstract

The aims of this study was to find out students’ responses regarding the implementation of extensive reading activity through Wattpad application. This study used qualitative research and a case study as research design. The site of the study was one of the senior high school in Karawang, West Java. The articipants was one class of eleven grades consisted of 46 students and six of them were chosen as representatives for interview. The data were collected by observation and semi-structured interview. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014). Three major findings were found as follows:  (1) Extensive reading using Wattpad increase students’ motivation to read, (2) Wattpad is an effective media in reading activity, (3) Students' challenges in extensive reading activity through Wattpad. Keywords:  Students’ Experiences; Extensive Reading; Wattpad Application

Abstract

Asynchronous learning started to be frequently used to carry out school teaching and learning activities since COVID-19, including for the speaking classroom. This issue changed the speaking assessment used into the asynchronous type to fit the learning method. This study aims to investigate English teachers’ challenges and opportunities in designing and implementing asynchronous speaking assessment. This research use narrative inquiry with semi-tructured interviews as the data collection technique and voice recorder as the documentation. The participant for this research was two English teachers at one of the Vocational High School in Jakarta. The findings showed three challenges and two opportunities while designing and implementing the asynchronous speaking assessment. The challenges were idea and inspiration, authentication of students’ submissions, and more time needed. As for the opportunities, the implementation was flexible, and the need to be more IT-minded. In conclusion, there were both challenges and opportunities while English teachers were designing and implementing the asynchronous speaking assessment. Keywords:        Asynchronous Learning; Speaking Assessment; Teachers’ Experience
