Abstract

Natural disasters frequently disrupt electrical infrastructure, creating critical challenges for emergency response, healthcare delivery, and community recovery. Portable solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have emerged as a sustainable and rapidly deployable solution for off‑grid energy provision in disaster‑affected regions. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of portable PV technologies for post‑disaster applications, encompassing system architectures, component selection, deployment configurations, and operational performance. Particular emphasis is placed on DC‑first designs, modular scalability, energy storage integration, and IoT‑enabled monitoring, which collectively enhance efficiency, reliability, and usability under harsh environmental conditions. The analysis highlights persistent challenges related to energy efficiency, storage resilience, system standardization, and user accessibility, while underscoring the importance of integration into broader emergency energy ecosystems. Research gaps are identified in areas such as efficiency optimization, human‑centered design, and scalability, providing guidance for the development of next‑generation portable PV systems. By consolidating technical and operational insights, this review establishes a foundation for advancing portable PV systems as robust emergency energy solutions, bridging the gap between immediate relief and long‑term resilience in disaster‑prone regions.

Abstract

In the electric power system, especially the distribution system, several disturbances may occur. Voltage grid disturbance is an important power quality problem on the distribution side especially for industry with dynamics loads consisting many three phase electric motors. As the voltage grid disturbance appears, the electrical load especially an induction motor is expected to keep running on the rated speed. This motor condition is also well known as ride-through capability. In this article, the influences of temporary voltage grid disturbances are analysed to know the running speed of an induction motor based on difference in moment of inertia and give further information about the ride through capability by using PSIM simulation as an experimental tool. There are various types of voltage grid disturbance drop will be proposed. The proposed types of voltage grid disturbance to be observed are short duration sag, long duration sag, momentary swell and momentary interruption. The experiential conventional methods observed in the works are direct on line, wye-delta and autotransformer. The PSIM simulation results demonstrate that increasing the rotor moment of inertia from 0.4 to 0.8 enhances the dynamic resilience of the motor by reducing the average speed deviation by approximately 9.76% during a long-duration voltage sag. Meanwhile, the momentary interruption is identified as the most severe grid disturbance, as it leads to a complete loss of electromagnetic torque and consequently causes motor stalling. These findings highlight that the mechanical inertia of the drive system plays a critical role in maintaining motor stability during abnormal supply conditions. Finally, this article provides quantitative evidence on the combined influence of inertia and disturbance severity, offering valuable insight for the optimal design of protection schemes and motor selection criteria in industrial applications.

Abstract

Energy resilience is a critical requirement in disaster-prone regions, where electrical infrastructure is highly vulnerable to natural hazards and prolonged power outages. Portable and modular solar power systems have emerged as promising solutions for enhancing resilience by enabling decentralized, rapidly deployable, and grid-independent energy supply. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the role of portable and modular photovoltaic-based power systems in improving energy resilience from a power electronics perspective. The review synthesizes recent literature on resilience concepts, system architectures, and converter-based control strategies relevant to emergency energy applications. Particular emphasis is placed on DC-first and hybrid AC/DC architectures, modular converter topologies, battery management systems, and energy management strategies that support reliable and fault-tolerant operation under variable and uncertain conditions. Practical deployment and performance considerations, including scalability, robustness, monitoring, and usability in disaster environments, are also discussed. The findings indicate that well-designed portable and modular solar power systems can significantly reduce recovery time, improve operational continuity, and decrease reliance on centralized grids and fuel-based generators. This review identifies key technical challenges and research opportunities to guide future development of resilient power electronic-based energy systems for disaster response and recovery.
