The government has made various efforts to prevent the virus from spreading widely. However, since the outbreak of the pandemic, the tourism sector has been greatly affected by the negative impacts of Covid-19. Although tourism is a sector that provides employment opportunities and helps reduce the unemployment rate, workers in this sector have been severely impacted with the loss of income to support their daily needs. Thus, this study aims to investigate the social changes that have occurred due to Covid-19 on the lives of former Lagoi Bay workers in Kota Baru Village, Teluk Sebong District, by utilizing Piotr Sztompka's theory of social change. The results indicate that the pandemic has had a significant impact on Lagoi Bay tourism workers, leading to various social changes in their daily lives.

Abstract

This study explores the construction of women in religious relations and their role in social change on the Indonesia-Singapore border, specifically focusing on Batam City in the Riau Islands. The religious landscape of this region is diverse, with various religious practices and beliefs coexisting. Understanding the dynamics of gender within these religious contexts is crucial to comprehending how women navigate and contribute to social change. The research employs a qualitative approach, such as observation, interviews, and document analysis. By engaging with local communities, religious leaders, and women themselves, this study seeks to uncover the multifaceted roles women play within religious institutions and the broader society. The findings shed light on the ways in which women negotiate their religious identities, practices, and responsibilities, as well as the challenges they encounter in their pursuit of social change. The study also examines the impact of globalization and transnational connections on the construction of women's religious roles, exploring how women in Batam City are influenced by and respond to global trends and ideas. Furthermore, the research addresses the power dynamics at play within religious institutions and how they shape women's experiences and opportunities for social transformation. It investigates the agency exercised by women in religious leadership roles and grassroots initiatives, highlighting the strategies they employ to challenge existing gender norms and advocate for gender equality.

Abstract

In the social process, individual humans are seen as relatively free creators of social reality in their social world, therefore the construction built by each individual is different, until the emergence of a phenomenon, namely the construction of female circumcision. Reality is the result of creative human creation through the power of social construction of the social world around them. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a hereditary custom that has become a tradition. This research was conducted to find out the construction of the tradition of circumcision in girls. The informants in this study were nine, namely the people of Tembeling Tanjung who did and did not circumcise girls and community leaders. This type of research is qualitative and the selection of informants uses purposive sampling technique with several predetermined criteria. From the results of the research, there were various kinds of social constructions in the tradition of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Tembeling Tanjung. This dialectical process occurs through externalization, objectivation, and internalization. In externalization, it is known that informants adapt values and norms in the form of adjustments in the implementation of circumcision. Informants' internalization of values and norms in socialization with family, religious leaders, community leaders and the social environment gave birth to an understanding of the objectivation of female circumcision. This is what causes informants to continue to actualize the tradition of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Abstract

The Dynamics of Problems of Akit Ethnic Community in Riau IslandsThis paper aims to describe the dynamics of fishing and aquaculture businesses in the Akit community, which is one of the remote indigenous communities (KAT) in Indonesia. The Akit learnt to cultivate mangrove crabs (Scylla) and mangrove snails (Telescopium) by themselves and experienced failure. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The research was conducted in 2020-2021 and data processing was carried out in 2022. Based on the results of the research, two classes of problems of the Sea Tribe community can be identified, firstly in terms of fishing they can only catch using traditional tools with less environmental risk but the catch is also very small. Secondly, there is the issue of aquaculture, where they experience constraints in knowledge, access and lack of assistance.  The weaknesses in the Akit Tribe's fisheries efforts are First, the Akit Tribe combines adult oysters with juvenile oysters because they do not understand the cannibalistic behaviour of the cultivated oysters. Secondly, the Akit Tribe made a lower oyster cultivation pond at high tide so that the cultivated oysters were washed away by the tidal current. Third, there is no regular checking of water quality in the cultivation environment

Abstract

There are many reasons to get married and there are many reasons not to marry. It is normal for marriage to be considered as a rational option, especially in metropolitan areas, but of course this cannot be normalized for people in small towns like Tanjungpinang where the majority are from the Malays. Modernity and the degradation of traditional values are the reasons why women delay marriage. Based on the results of the research, the Tanjungpinang Malay community can understand the delay in the age of marriage for working women (career women) but not so for women who do not work it is considered a disgrace.

Abstract

Traditional values that are still preserved and binding on Indigenous Communities are often regarded as one of the obstacles to modernism by the modernization stream. Indigenous is still viewed by indigenous people as a social problem, because its alienation & backwardness make them a socially vulnerable group (socio-political silliness). Even in the Regulation of the Minister of Social Affairs Number 8 of 2012, it has stipulated KAT as one of the 26 Persons with Social Welfare Problems (PMKS) in Indonesia. This research discusses traditional culture as the strength of KAT. Based on this research, it was found that traditional culture plays a positive role in encouraging development for the Sea Tribe community itself. The traditional elements owned by the Sea Tribe community and can be a force in supporting development, namely; first, the collective consciousness awakened in the people of the Sea Tribe to protect nature. Second, responsibility to family, community and tribalism is great when compared to a more individualistic modern society. Third, the animist belief of the Sea Tribe people who still believe that a person who always does evil during his life and then dies, his spirit will be incarnated in the form of an animal that comes out of his grave. Fourth, the role of religious leaders for the Orang Laut community in the Riau Islands is a force to encourage development in the Sea Tribe community, especially as a bridge of communication with local governments. Fifth, the presence of Sea Tribe shamans who are trusted by some local Malay communities makes the presence of the Sea Tribe community acceptable and can gradually blend into the local community.
