Abstract

This study aims to describe how Badiuzzaman Said Nursi views the relation of shari'a, tariqat, and haqiqat and how the concept of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi in his Sufism journey and what is behind the birth of the concept of Sufism. The method used in this research is qualitative with the type of library research. The study results show that Nursi's view of the relation of shari'a, tariqat, and haqiqat cannot be separated from one another because all three are three paths with one goal. Nursi abbreviated several concepts in his Sufism journey with four concepts sourced from the Qur'an, including weakness (al-'Ajz), poverty (al-Faqr), and compassion (al-Syafaqah), thinking and contemplating (Tafakkur). Something behind Badiuzzaman Said Nursi in his Sufism revitalization discourse is due to the rampant deviations committed by Sufistic practitioners in Turkey.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal Muhammad Husein Faḍlullah’s ideas about Religious Harmony as contained in his commentary, min waḥy al-Qur’an. Faḍlullah’s thoughts are relevant to study in the current context to see the concept of harmony from a different perspective, namely the Modern Shia school. By using a qualitative paradigm with a critical discourse analysis approach to Faḍlullah’s works, this study found two findings: first, Modern Shia consistently offers the concept of Ijtimā’ī Adabī interpretation, which is centered on the ideas of tolerance, harmony between religious communities, social holiness, and rejection against all forms of radicalism; second, Interpretation products are inseparable from ideological ideas and teachings of their schools. At this point, even though Faḍlullah is involved in the political movement of the Hezbollah Party, which tends to be radical, his thoughts still represent his school of thought, especially regarding religious tolerance and harmony. From these findings, this study also wants to emphasize that a person's background does not directly influence the product of his thoughts in the future, as stated by Naṣr Ḥamid Abū Zayd. This research supports Andrew Silke and Tinka Veldhuis’s findings regarding “Countering violent extremism in prisons: A review of key recent research and critical research gaps” that the author's personal character and personal experience factors determine the product of one’s interpretation.

Abstract

This article aims to figure out Indonesian commentators perspectives on the position of women in the domestic and public sphere. This research comes from the question; Has the patriarchal identity that existed in Indonesia influenced Indonesian commentators perspectives in interpreting the Koran?  And what is Indonesian commentators perspective on women’s leadership in the public sphere? With the literary method and critical analysis of their works, tafsīr al-Misbah, Tafsīr al-Azhar, and Tafsīr Marāh} Labīd, this research resulted in the following findings and conclusions. First, in essence, the three Indonesian commentators did not give permission to women to become leaders in the household, even they have different reasons. Nawāwī al-Bantānī considers men to be leaders for their wives, because men has the potential to educate them, has intellectual and physical strength. Hamka gave consideration to Indonesian traditions and culture. Meanwhile, Quraish Shihab argues that a man is the leader over his wife because of the psychological and character considerations of men who are more assertive. Second, regarding women’s leadership in the public sphere, Quraish Shihab and Hamka allow women to become leaders for men as long as they have sufficient criteria. Meanwhile al-Nawāwī did not provide a clear explanation of the status of women’s leadership in the public sphere. The findings in this study also confirm that, in addressing the problem of women, the Indonesian commentators has a paradigm shift from time to time, this is due to sociological factors and conditions surrounding the interpreter.

Abstract

The art of calligraphy, the greatness of Islamic art, was naturally born amid the world of architecture. This can be proven in the various calligraphic decorations that fill mosques and other buildings, combined with the noble Qur’anic verses, hadiths, or the wise words of wise scholars. The Qur’an is written in various models of calligraphy with dazzling and varied decorations. This study analyzes the Aesthetics and Calligraphy Reception of the Probolinggo Regency Mosque from the perspective of the Living Qur’an. With the living Qur’an method, God’s verbal revelation is expressed in a tangible form in writing, which has been a long debate and has influenced civilization. The Qur’an became the main factor in the development of the art of Islamic calligraphy, so calligraphy was expressed to devote the power of the revelation of the Qur’an. Meanwhile, ornamentation is the development of a sense of beauty that is free from natural myths and is done by developing abstract patterns taken from the processing of floral, leaf, and polygon motifs. This study concludes that the aesthetics and reception of calligraphy at the Probolinggo mosque can be considered uniform, both at the Badridduja, Ar Raudhah, and Raudhatul Jannah mosques, even though the texts chosen are not the same. The color choices converge on green and gold, indicating they are identical to Islam, where the symbolic meanings are plants, trees, leaves, and forests. Meanwhile, the psychological meaning of green is growth, renewal, balance, harmony, and the environment. Green color mixed with Gold color, the eyes that will look at it make you feel happy with all the artful writing.

Abstract

This paper aims to figure out Nawawi al-Bantani and Muhammad al-‘Uthaimin about the heresy verses in the Qur’an. This research stems from the problem of the scholar’s views and responses to the traditions that are considered heretical. From this controversy, this article attempts to analyze the meaning of heresy in Nawawi’s interpretation of Marāḥ Labīd and Muhammad al-‘Uthaimin’s interpretation of the Tafsīr Qur’ān al-Karīm. These two works of interpretation represent two different religious schools and regions. By using descriptive-analytical and comparative methods, this study produced two findings, 1) the mazhabiyyah paradigm adopted by the mufassir greatly influenced the results of tafsir; 2) despite using the same method of monitoring the Qur’an, both Nawawi al-Bantani and Muhammad al-‘Uthaimin made different restrictions because of their ideological influence. The results of this study also show that Nawawi al-Bantani in the interpretation of Marāḥ Labīd and the control of Muhammad al-‘Uthaimin in the interpretation of the Qur’an al-Karim about heresy in the Qur’an have different connotations. From the socio-historical context, the resources, methods, and styles used to have a significant influence so as to produce differences and similarities in the verse about heresy. The position of this research is the finding of Afif Suaidi (2021) regarding ideological tendencies in transliterating the Koran that the variety and translation of the Koran is caused by the religious understanding adopted by the author and aims to support ideology in its interpretation.

Abstract

Tafsr Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-’Uthaimīn not only produces a methodological implementation, but also has implications for socio-religious construction that raises issues of radicalism. This study aims to examine the elements of radicalism contained in Tafsr Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-’Uthaimīn. By using the descriptive-bibliographic method, this study maps the elements of radicalism in Tafsr Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-’Uthaimīn included in the concept of diversity and the concept of da’wah. This study shows that Tafsr Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-’Uthaimīn claims that his religious concept is the only form of the most correct and safe model. In the social sphere, Uthaimīn carries the concept of al-Walā’ (loyalty) giving the impression that Muslims should be united, close and help each other with one another, but not with infidel groups. Then in conceptualizing al-Barā’ (rejection), al-’Uthaimīn considers that other religious communities should be shunned even under certain conditions they can be fought; diversity of Muḥammad bin Ṣāliḥ al-'Uthaimīn intolerant in the theological-ritual realm. While his views on jihad, al-’Uthaimīn classifies jihad into several levels, including fighting people of other religions.

Abstract

This article explores the Javanese worldview and the integration efforts of Gus Baha’s interpretations on social media. Despite numerous studies on Gus Baha’, there is a lack of research specifically linking the Javanese worldview with his Qur’anic interpretations. This study aims to examine how Gus Baha’s interpretations of the Qur’an influence the worldview of Javanese society, focusing on the responses and expressions of the audience towards his lectures. The research employs a qualitative method, using primary data from Gus Baha’s lecture videos on YouTube and audience comments, as well as secondary data from academic literature. Data collection includes observation, content analysis, and literature review. The analysis involves video transcription, thematic coding, and a hermeneutic approach to understand the interaction between interpretations and local Javanese traditions. The findings indicate that the Javanese worldview plays a significant role in the dissemination of localized interpretations, bridging Islamic insights with local traditions. Furthermore, this study underscores a trend in Indonesia from a literal interpretation model to an audiovisual one. The study highlights the need for further research on the relationship between religion and culture in the context of technology and recommends the development of policies to support digital dakwah.

Abstract

Religious moderation in Indonesia emerged as a response to increasing intolerance, radicalism, and religious-based conflicts. Despite having a strong foundation, the implementation of this concept still faces challenges such as political and religious polarization, the spread of hoaxes, and the low level of public understanding of religious moderation. M. Quraish Shihab, as one of the contemporary tafsir figures, actively voices the importance of moderation through his writings, including the book “Wasathiyyah: Wawasan Islam tentang Moderasi Beragama”. This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation according to M. Quraish Shihab’s perspective, explain its relevance in the context of Indonesian society, identify challenges in its implementation, and provide strategic recommendations for strengthening religious moderation in society. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach. The analysis was carried out on primary and secondary sources, including books, journals, scientific articles, and relevant official documents. The analysis technique used is content analysis with a thematic approach. This study found that the concept of religious moderation put forward by M. Quraish Shihab emphasizes balance in belief, thought, and action. Moderation is defined as an effort to maintain a balance between various poles, such as the soul and body, religion and state, and reason and religious texts. This study provides theoretical contributions in enriching the study of religious moderation as well as practical contributions as references for the government, educational institutions, and society in realizing harmony in religious and state life.
