Abstract

Not only as a background to the plot, space can also be used as the center of the story or act as a helper for the story.  Space can also have symbolic meaning that plays a role in enriching the world of the story.  This research discusses the narrative space in the Japanese novel JR Ueno Eki Kouen Guchi (2014) by Yu Miri.  In this novel, space is the main driver of the story.  This research aims to explain narrative space strategies using the spatial narratology perspective described by Ryan, Foote, and Azaryahu (2016).  The research results show that the construction of space in this novel shows the existence of certain patterns that build the world in the story.  This pattern shows the implication of meaning through the relationships between spaces.  This relationship provides context for the actions taken by the characters and the events that appear in the novel.  Through space construction, the circumstances surrounding the entire text can be identified.  This shows that narrative space constructs the world in the novel by providing context for the things that happen in the story plot.Keywords: narratology, narrative space construction, JR Ueno Eki Kouen Guchi

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study describes the art of Pakemplung in Kampung Tegal Bungur, Wanasari Village, Naringgul District, Cianjur Regency. This art is very rare and almost extinct. This study aims to explore the history of Pakemplung art, forms of performance, essence, symbols, functions, and to identify and collect Pakemplung art documents. The method used is descriptive with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of research, Pakemplung art is used as a medium to get closer to God and a medium for interaction between players and spectators. As a whole, Pakemplung's art contains religious, compact, mutual cooperation, responsibility, observant, thoroughness, courage, beauty, neatness, authority, and servitude.Keywords: Pakemplung art, essence, symbols, functionsABSTRAKPenelitian ini tentang kesenian pakemplung di Kampung Tegal Bungur Desa Wanasari Kecamatan Naringgul Kabupaten Cianjur. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguak sejarah, bentuk pertunjukan, makna, simbol, dan fungsi pakemplung, serta mengidentifikasi dan mengumpulkan dokumentasinya. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data yang digunakan berupa sumber primer dan sekunder. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Validasi data menggunakan triangulasi sumber, dan dianalisis dengan kualitatif model interaktif. Adapun yang menjadi objek penelitian ini yaitu budaya kesenian pakemplung dengan subjek penelitian dari empat narasumber yang dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik snowball. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian maka dihasilkan seni Pakemplung sebagai media untuk mendekatkan diri dengan Tuhan dan tempat untuk melakukan proses interaksi antara pemain dengan penonton. Pakemplung secara keseluruhan mengandung makna religius, kekompakan, gotong royong, tanggungjawab, kejelian, ketelitian, keberanian, keindahan, kerapian, kewibawaan, dan penghambaan.Kata kunci: seni pakemplung, esensi, simbol, fungsi

Abstract

ABSTRAKPerkembangan teori terkini, terutama dalam bidang kajian budaya menunjukkan bahwa teks novel populer dapat dipelajari dengan berbagai pendekatan, tidak hanya terfokus pada aspek estetika. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam upaya untuk menemukan adanya konstruksi budaya pada novel populer tahun 2000-an. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan interdisipliner yang melibatkan teori di bidang kajian budaya. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi teks. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah novel-novel populer tahun 2000-an. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam novel populer tahun 2000-an, impian menjadi wacana dominan dan anak muda yang dikonstruksikan sebagai pembawa impian itu adalah anak muda yang berasal dari kelas pinggiran. Hal ini memberi kesimpulan bahwa novel populer tahun 2000-an menawarkan konstruksi anak muda yang berbeda yang keluar dari konstruksi arus utama novel populer yang biasanya berasal dari kelas dominan.Kata kunci: novel populer, anak muda, kajian budayaABSTRACTRecent theory developments, especially in the field of cultural studies indicate that the popular novel text can be studied with a variety of approaches, not just focused on the aesthetic aspect. This research was conducted in an effort to determine that there is a cultural construction at the popular novels of the 2000s. This study uses an interdisciplinary approach involving theories in the area of cultural studies. The method used is the study of texts.. The object of this study is the popular novels of the 2000s. These results indicate that in the popular novel of the 2000s, the dream of becoming the dominant discourse and youth are constructed as a carrier of that dream is a youth who comes from the outskirts of the class. This gives the conclusion that the popular novels of the 2000s offers a different construction on youth coming out of the construction of the main stream popular novels which usually comes from the dominant class.Keywords: popular novel, youth, cultural studies

Abstract

Based on the theory of Lakoff and Coates, this study aims to identify the types of language features based on female and male genders. In addition, this study also aims to describe the functions of language features based on female and male gender spoken by speakers at the Mata Najwa Exclusive in 2024. The research methods used are descriptive qualitative methods. The object of this research includes variables of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that are identified as female language features and male language features. The results of the study showed that there were 1,397 speeches containing female and male language features. A total of 924 speeches were women's language features. Then, as many as 473 of them are speeches that are included in the features of male language. In addition, it was also found that each feature of female and male language has its own function according to the context of the speech.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the representation of masculinity and the responses of male characters to societal demands for masculine characteristics in Eka Kurniawan's novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas. The article utilizes R.W. Connell's theory of hegemonic masculinity and Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony to explore how masculinity is represented in the narrative and how male characters respond to the social construction of ideal masculinity. It identifies key themes related to masculinity and male character responses, as well as the interactions between characters and the internal conflicts they experience. The findings reveal that the representation of masculinity in the novel reflects the 1980s era, characterized by authoritative behaviour, sexual aggression, and the use of violence as a form of manliness. The conflict between masculinity expectations and individual emotional needs drives male characters to exhibit responses that reflect both resistance and affirmation of societal masculinity stereotypes.

Abstract

The New Order's masculinity politics, which perpetuates hegemonic masculinity through the concept of bapakism, is still influential after the reform. The implications can be seen from the dominance of the "father" image often displayed by politicians via social media, one of whom is Ridwan Kamil. This article aims to explain Ridwan Kamil's construction of masculinity in the Instagram account @ridwankamil using mixed methods by combining a corpus-based digital humanities theoretical framework and concepts of the politics of masculinity and bapakisme. The results of the research show that, Ridwan Kamil predominantly displays hegemonic masculinity through caption language on his Instagram by often positioning himself as "father" and society as "children" and subordinating women using sexist language. This article argues that politicians use political masculinity as rhetoric and ideology to strengthen their position of power and gain support from society, which is also still heteronormative.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan relasi di antara tema-tema novel Aroma Karsa (2018) karya Dee Lestari, yaitu hiperosmia, perempuan, dan kekuasaan. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan dan metodologi feminis. Kisah novel tersebut berfokus pada pencarian bunga ajaib, Puspa Karsa, yang ditengarai memiliki kekuatan untuk mewujudkan kehendak, dengan diwarnai misteri, percintaan, petualangan, mitos, dan sejarah. Referensi teoretis tentang perempuan dan kekuasaan dalam kerangka feminis di antaranya berasal dari Moi, Elstain, dan Gilligan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) kondisi hiperosmia yang dalam dunia medis dianggap sebagai gangguan kesehatan, di dalam novel ini justru membawa keuntungan bagi para tokoh dan menjadi kelebihan atau senjata mereka. (2) Para tokoh perempuan di dalam novel Aroma Karsa memiliki kualitas berupa keteguhan hati dan keyakinan, sehingga mereka dapat meraih dan mempertahankan kekuasaan. (3) Kekuasaan dan kehendak yang kuat tapi tidak dapat dikendalikan dapat membawa kehancuran pada mereka sendiri dan alam sekitarnya. (4) Selain dianggap sebagai perusak, perempuan juga memiliki sifat pemelihara.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kondisi sosial sebagian masyarakat khususnya kaum muda terindikasi sedang kehilangan jatidiri, akibat bergesernya nilai-nilai hidup yang hakiki dan adanya pengaruh budaya luar. Penelitian ini membahas tentang upaya penyebaran nilai-nilai karakter pada tari Kélangan. Melalui teori Resepsi Encoding-Decoding Stuart Hall, bertujuan mendeskripsikan bagaimana proses penyebaran nilai-nilai karakter pada tari Kélangan dan bagaimana khalayak memaknai gagasan tesebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitiatif berdasarkan metode Bogdan dan Taylor. Teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Sumber data terdiri dari data primer berupa hasil wawancara dan data sekunder berupa catatan, buku, tesis, jurnal, foto dan video dan data lapangan. Tujuan penelitian menunjukan nilai-nilai karakter pada tari Kélangan antara lain nilai religius, disiplin, tanggung jawab, kerjasama, toleransi, sopan santun dan kewaspadaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemaknaan audiens/khalayak terhadap upaya penyebaran nilai-nilai karakter pada tari Kélangan beragam: (1) sebagian besar menerima secara utuh wacana yang disebarkan oleh pencipta tari; (2) sebagian lagi menerima, namun menyandinya dengan makna yang berbeda dan (3) audiens/khalayak menolak sama sekali wacana tersebut dan menyandinya dengan caranya sendiri. Kata Kunci: Kondisi Sosial, Tari Kélangan, Nilai Karakter, Resepsi Audiens/Khalayak. ABSTRACT THE EFFORTS TO DISSEMINATE CHARACTER VALUES ON KÉLANGAN DANCE, JUNE 2024. The social conditions of some people, especially young people are indicated to be losing identity, due to the shifting of essential life values and external cultural influences. This research discusses efforts to disseminate character values in the Kélangan dance. Through Stuart Hall's Encoding-Decoding reception theory, the research aims to describe how the process of spreading character values in the Kélangan dance and how the audience interpreted the idea. This research is a qualitiative descriptive based on the Bogdan and Taylor methods. The techniques of collecting data through observation, interviews and documentation. Data sources consist of primary data in the form of interview results and secondary data in the form of notes, books, thesis, journals, photos and videos, and field data. The purpose of the study shows character values in the Kélangan dance, among others, religious values, discipline, responsibility, co-operation, tolerance, courtesy and vigilance. The results of the research show that the interpretation of the audience towards the efforts to spread the character values in the Kélangan dance is varied: (1) mostly received the discourse that was distributed by the creator of the dance; (2) Some accepted, but signed it with different meanings and (3) Audience rejected the discourse and signed it in their own way. Abstract

Instagram has become a new public space in politics used to influence and attract public sympathy by a politician, one of whom is Ridwan Kamil. This article aims to explain the process of building and maintaining the identity of celebrity politician Ridwan Kamil on the Instagram account @ridwankamil as a way of carrying out a hegemony project. Mixed methods are used in this article through a corpus-based digital humanities approach, a theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, hegemony, celebrity politicians, and self-presentation. The research results show two findings. First, Ridwan Kamil built the identity of a celebrity politician through his Instagram account by using visual images to show his physical characteristics. Second, Ridwan Kamil often uses the words "Bandung" and "West Java" as nodal points which refer to the area of political power he has, then uses the words "I" and "us" as well as three self-presentation techniques, namely self-branding, life streaming, and micro-celebrity to maintain the identity of celebrity politicians. This article argues that the identity of celebrity politicians is a hegemonic project because the chains of equality and the illusion of closeness created by celebrity politicians obscure power relations, but on the other hand, show themselves as rulers.
