Abstract

The study to analyze the computer-mediated hate speech discourse in a virtual environment. Social media and digital network connectivity allow for almost constant interaction and communication. Technological developments, accompanied by socio-political transformations, have become a widespread area of study for the production of hate speech. It is the subject of much academic research; however, a gap remains in the qualitative space that focuses on the form and function of the speech act. The study employs three distinct yet complementary traditions of discourse analysis to investigate hate speech, aiming to understand how social media users achieve the intended purpose of this type of speech. By examining the use of identity, impropriety, and intertextuality in examples of hate speech, this analysis identifies specific repetitive discursive techniques employed by speakers to achieve their goals. The study argues that to understand the features and styles of online communication, hate speech can be identified as a distinct genre of speech. However, this genre does not operate unchallenged: the data also reveals emergent counter-discourses in which other users engage in resisting hate speech through discursive reframing, sarcastic rebuttals, and appeals to civility norms, thereby shaping a contested digital space.

Abstract

The profound impact of colonialism and Westernization has often been overlooked in studies examining the portrayal of Eastern identity in Arabic literature. This research examines two novels by Najib Kailani, Al-Yawmu Al-Maw'ūd (1960) and Mawakib Al-Ahrār (1985), which reconstruct two distinct colonial periods using Egypt as a narrative setting. The primary aim of this study is to identify and analyze the narrative techniques employed by Kailani to depict Eastern societies and his endeavor to construct and preserve an Eastern identity. Using a qualitative method grounded in the theoretical approaches of narratology, representation, identity, and Occidentalism, this research addresses an urgent and novel gap by elucidating how Eastern identity is constructed in Arabic literature as a response to colonialism and the hegemony of Western discourse. In doing so, it adopts an epistemological approach rooted in Eastern perspectives. The study argues that the novels reaffirm the role of Arabic literature as a medium of resistance and a means of strengthening the collective identity of Eastern societies in the face of colonial and cultural hegemony.

Abstract

Among the prominent Indonesian biographical films concerning "national heroes" that emerged in the 2010s is "Jokowi" (2013). This film narrates the life of Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who was then serving as the Governor of Jakarta and was released a month prior to the announcement of his presidential candidacy in the 2014 elections. The film predominantly focuses on Jokowi's personal life, including his romantic experiences, rather than his political career. This emphasis underscores the significance of personal character construction in creating a leader's myth in Indonesia. Employing the methodologies of film narratology and mythological semiotics, this article examines how the film, through its scenes, plot, and characterization, constructs a myth of Jokowi that bolsters his image as a political leader. The depiction of Jokowi as a masculine, family oriented, and decisive leader presents him as an "ideal" character. This article posits that such portrayal endeavors to integrate the character into the cultural mythology as a "hero." The film's narrative, which follows a heroic pattern and aligns the character with Javanese wayang heroes, positions Jokowi as a classical hero. The marketing of the biopic as a "true story" carries political implications, specifically for the 2014 election and Jokowi's image, and more broadly for the ideological discourse of the state, particularly Bapakism and the paternal function of the state.

Abstract

This study looks at how social mobility shapes the protagonist’s identity in Ahmad Fuadi’s ‘Negeri 5 Menara’ trilogy. Most earlier studies on these novels focus on moral values or educational motivation. But few have asked how the protagonist’s social mobility relates to his identity formation. But identity matters more than ever in today’s changing Indonesia. Educational mobility is growing. People interact across cultures more often. And globalization keeps shaping who young people become. Within this broader landscape of global educational mobility, literary works such as the Negeri 5 Menara trilogy portray the identity formation of Indonesian Muslim youth who experience both class and cultural mobility. This research aims to reveal the construction of a santri identity through the representation of social mobility experienced by the protagonist by employing a Bildungsroman analytical framework. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method with an objective approach to literary texts as conceptualized by M. H. Abrams. The unit of analysis consists of narrative events that represent the protagonist’s social mobility. The primary data source is the Negeri 5 Menara trilogy, which is examined through critical reading of the protagonist’s developmental trajectory across three stages of identity formation: the initial crisis phase, the phase of conflict and educational formation, and the stage of maturity. The findings indicate that Alif’s social mobility extends beyond geographical movement and also encompasses cultural mobility shaped by educational experiences, cross-cultural interactions, and engagement within global networks. These experiences contribute to the formation of a dynamic and cosmopolitan santri identity, tell us about cosmopolitan Muslim literacy on Alif’s experiences moving for school, living as an intellectual away from home, show that being a santri doesn’t have to mean being closed off. It can become more open and adaptive. These findings contribute to literary studies, identity studies, and cultural studies by offering a deeper understanding of how the identities of Muslim youth are shaped within the context of contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examines how trauma is represented through the integration of narrative and gameplay in A Space for the Unbound. While video games increasingly function as complex storytelling media, the mechanisms by which interactive systems convey psychological trauma remain underexplored. The aim of this research is to identify and explain strategies for trauma representation through spatial disruption, restrictions on player agency, memory fragmentation, and temporal structures characterized by repetition and belatedness. Employing a qualitative multimodal approach, the study treats the video game as an interactive text, analyzing selected gameplay segments through purposive sampling. Data consisting of gameplay recordings and screenshots were examined using ludonarrative analysis, supported by Cathy Caruth's trauma theory and narratology. The results reveal four main findings regarding trauma representation: (1) spatial disorientation within the environment, (2) restrictions on player control, (3) memory fragmentation in a liminal analeptic space, and (4) patterns of repetition and delayed trauma. The study concludes that trauma in narrative-driven video games operates as an experiential structure produced through player interaction, where storytelling, mechanics, and spatial design collectively construct trauma as both a narrative theme and an interactive process. A Space for the Unbound.

Abstract

This article examines the construction of masculinity through two male characters, Nozias Faustin and Max Ardin Jr., in the novel Claire of the Sea Light (2013) by Edwidge Danticat, a Haitian diaspora writer. Previous studies discuss ecological concerns, postcolonial perspectives, and female characters’ resistance to patriarchy. However, the portrayal of male characters in relation to dominant norms of masculinity remains underexplored. Studies on masculinity in Haitian literature have explored colonialism, race, sexuality, and patriarchal norms, indicating a gap in the discussion of non-normative masculinity. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing how non-normative masculinity is constructed through narrative structures. The study employs close reading within Gérard Genette’s narratological framework, particularly focalization and order, as well as an intersectional masculinity framework based on class and sexuality. The study reveals two main findings. First, non-normative masculinity is negotiated differently according to class position: Nozias, a lower-class man, reconfigures fatherhood through relinquishing his child as a response to provider norms, while Max Junior, an upper-class homosexual man, adopts and performs heteronormative masculinity through sexual violence and financial support to gain patriarchal legitimacy. Second, focalization and order strategies create differences in moral accountability: the fragmented narrative with comprehensive flashbacks opens emotional and reflective space for Nozias, whereas the semi-linear narrative with limited flashbacks restricts the depiction of guilt for Max Junior. These results demonstrate that masculinity in the novel is not only socially negotiated but also structurally produced through narrative form, offering insights into gender, class, and sexuality in post-disaster Haitian contexts.
