Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out whether there was a students ability to speaking after learning recount text. This type of research is quantitative. The data used is the value of students in knowing improvenment in speaking students to understanding recount text. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews as introductory stage with students and teacher to find out the improvenment in students speaking skills, observation, questionnaire and data collection. The conclusion of this research is that after doing cycle 1 and cycle 2 the recount text can to improve students ability Key words: speaking skills, recount text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find does the animation movies can improve students’ skill and ability in writing narrative text at SMP Swasta TD Pardede Foundation at VII grade in academic year2018/2019. In this research, the researchers used classroom action research and was conducted in two cycles. Each cycles consist of four steps, there are: planning, action, observing and reflecting. This research used quantitative and qualitative research to collect the data, researchers conduct tests. The tests are pre-test and post-test.The result showed that the teaching students’ skill in writing using video can improve students’ skill in writing narrative text. An increase in mean scores indicates that there is an increase in students’ skill. The student’s pre-test score was 63.69; it increased to 72.50 in the first post-test up to 78.02 in the second post-test. From the result of the study, it can be concluded that teaching writing skill using animation videos can improve students’ writing skill. Keyword: narrative, animation movie

Abstract

The research aims to know that Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy (VSS) can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and to find out how far Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) can be useful for the students' vocabulary mastery at the second-grade students of SMP Sinar Husni Medan. The methodology of this research used Classroom Action Research. It was conducted on a two-cycle. In analyzing the data, the researcher used quantitative data. The implementation of Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy (VSS) in teaching vocabulary at eight grade students was successful. It can be seen from the progress of the mean score in cycle I to cycle II. Mean score in a period I 71.20 % and rating in cycle II 78.80 %. The implementation Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy (VSS) as a learning strategy was not only increasing students' mean score but also increase students' motivation and behavior. The students were more interested, happy, and active in teaching-learning English, especially vocabulary. Based on the result above, it could be concluded that Vocabulary Self - Collection Strategy (VSS) improved their students’ vocabulary mastery. Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the students’ vocabulary ability in finding verb through song lyrics. And this study has done in SMP MARISI Medan. Speaking is one of the language skills in English. That’s why mastery vocabulary is needed by every people. Vocabulary is a set of similar words within a person’s language. A vocabulary, usually developed with age, serves as as useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge. Teaching vocabulary through song is not only sing or reading lyric of song and fun so that is make the students passive but also process of teaching these vocabulary to be applied in activities in a form of communication.The result of analysis showed that finding verb through song lyrics answered by students’. The students’ who got excellent is 18 (60%), the students’ who got good is 10 (33,3%) . so after the writer got there are score, the writer concluded that students’ who got excellent and good categorized able. The students’ who got categorized Bad2 (6,6%) students’. So, after the writer got there are score, the writer conclude that students’ who got enough and bad categorized unable in finding verb. The researcher hopes that the students’ should be active in learning especially on vocabulary because vocabulary is one of important skills in learning English. The students’ must develop their vocabulary so they can speak well in English. Moreover, the students’ may get more knowledge to improve their vocabulary in English.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find the comparison question sentences between Karonese and English language. The method of this study was Chomsky Theory X bar to discussed the syntax and semantic writes a diagram tree and NP, VP, PP, AP, Adv.P in questions in sentences. It showed that the dominant questions sentences in Karonese use; Wh-Q + NP?. It wrriten 15 times sentences in question. The second position was Wh-Q + NP + C. English has tenses to mention something. It would be different auxiliary when the time in the present, past and future. The second was found that most English questions have the same formula when asking something. The formula used Wh-Q + Aux + S + V + C ? It conclude that there were a different way to arrange questions sentence in Karonese and English language

Abstract

This research is to find out that crossword puzzle teaching strategy gives a significant effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA Amir Hamzah Medan. The crossword puzzle is a kind of word game which can improve the learners to enrich their vocabulary knowledge. The research design used is pre-experimental design formed as one group pretest- posttest design using quantitative approach. The data collecting method is test. The research data are analyzed by applying paired samples t-test formula through SPSS 23 and the result of the research shows that the value of the t-count is 51,700, while the t-table with the significance level of 5% and Df of 12 is 2,179. The t-count is higher than the t-table (51,7002,179). This  means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, there is a significant effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery before and after having taught by the utilization of crossword puzzle teaching strategy at SMA Amir Hamzah Medan.

Abstract

The aim of the researcher is to know the students’ ability in use simple past tense of Tenth Grade at SMK Swasta Mulia Pratama Medan. The method of this research is a case study in the form qualitative research method. The total samples of this research are 24 students. The researcher analyzed the data by multiple choice test. The result show that the mean score of students 27,95. The students were belonged into weak category gained by 12 student (50%). The other students were belonged into very good category gained 2 students (8%). The other students were belonged category fair 3 students (12%). 7 students (30%) who belonged to poor category. The students still do not understand and confuse about simple past tense, but some of them can able to answer the test very well because they are more learn and already know about past tense. And some of them could not able to answer the test is because they really do not know about simple past tense.

Abstract

This research aims to describe students' difficulties in writing narrative texts, the students' more dominant problems and to know English teacher action to solve the problem. The researchers used qualitative research and a descriptive case study. This study tries to observe students' mistakes in writing narrative texts. The data collected based on the students' answer sheet. The categories made based on the students' answer sheets in writing Narrative texts. The things that recorded by the researchers for giving scores are the four generic structures: Orientation, Complication, Resolution, and Re-Orientation/Coda. And the researchers found that the students still had difficulties in writing narrative texts with the generic structures. Based on the findings, from 26 students only 3 students can distinguish between parts of generic structures and the rest must practice at home and ask the teacher to make improvements.

Abstract

Language is a communication tool used to talk to each other, language can also be used to describe or express someone's feelings. As we know, language has 4 skills: listening, speaking, and writing. Each skill has its own meaning, but the researcher will discuss reading skills which are the process of thinking and obtaining information from a reading text, so that they can derive meaning from the reading text. Therefore, it is very important to learn reading skills in order to obtain important points or reading information from those who do not know to know. This study aims to analyze how many students can and are able to understand the contents of narrative texts. With this, the researcher selected the tenth graders at the Budi Murni Catholic Private High School 2 to be used as samples. This study uses a quantitative approach, the motive is to examine certain samples, with data collection techniques in the form of distributing questionnaires in the form of a Likert scale, then calculating the results of the answer instruments obtained by each student, followed by coding the answer instruments, after which the values are sought: mean, media, and mode, then the reliability test and validity test were carried out with the aim of proving the validity of the student's answer instrument. So it can be concluded based on the results of the analysis obtained by each learning target, 23 respondents found it easier to understand narrative texts after seeing and/or hearing stories with excessive frequency, there were 5 students who were declared fluent. In retelling the narrative text that has been read, 7 students are able to understand the lesson other than with the help of fingers, pens, or others, 7 students are able and as many as 6 respondents are not in a position to understand the narrative text, even though there are a few sentences left in the text.Bahasa merupakan alat komunikasi yang digunakan untuk berkomunikasi atau berbicara satu dengan yang lain, bahasa juga dapat digunakan untuk menggambarkan atau mengungkapkan perasaan seseorang. Seperti yang kita ketahui dalam berbahasa harus memiliki 4 keterampilan : mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis. Keterampilan membaca merupakan proses memperoleh informasi dari suatu teks bacaan, oleh karena itu keterampilan membaca sangat penting untuk dipelajari siswa sehingga dapat memperoleh poin penting atau infomasi dari yang tidak tahu menjadi tahu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tentang seberapa banyak siswa yang dapat dan mampu memahami isi bacaan teks naratif. Dengan ini peneliti memilih siswa kelas X di SMA Swasta Katolik Budi Murni 2 untuk menjadi sampelnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif, motifnya untuk meneliti suatu sampel tertentu, dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa penyebaran kuesioner dalam bentuk skala likert, kemudian menghitung hasil instrumen jawaban yang diperoleh masing-masing siswa, dilanjut dengan melakukan coding atau pemberian kode terhadap instrumen jawaban, setelah itu mencari hasil nilai dari : mean, media, dan mode, kemudian melakukan uji reliabilitas dan uji validalitas dengan tujuan untuk membuktikan valid tidaknya instrumen jawaban siswa. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan berdasarkan hasil analisis diperoleh frekuensi masing-masing target pembelajaran yaitu 23 responden lebih mudah memahami teks naratif setelah mereka menonton dan/atau mendengar cerita dengan frekuensi yang berlebihan, terdapat 5 siswa yang dapat dinyatakan lancar dalam menceritakan kembali isi teks naratif yang telah dibaca, 7 siswa mampu memahami pembelajaran selain dengan bantuan jari, bolpoin, atau lainnya, 7 siswa mampu dan sebanyak 6 responden tidak dalam posisi untuk memahami narasi teks meskipun ada beberapa kalimat yang tersisa dalam teks.

Abstract

The research was conducted aiming to an analysis of students’ ability in writing descriptive texts at the second grade SMP Swasta Talitakum medan”. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This research was conducted at the second grade focus on generic structure, characteristics, vocabulary. From the data analysis of 23 students, 43.48% of students had a low writing ability category, 34.78% had a medium writing ability, and 21.73% had a high writing ability category. The researchers found that students still had many difficulties in making paragraphs that used the correct generic structure. So students need a lot of practice both at home and courses. Keywords: writing, descriptive text, generic structure.
