The data collected for measurement consists of quiz results completed by students. The quiz results reveal that many students have not met the competency limits. In other words, role play method in this research has not yet achieved the targeted success. The main factor that influences the success or failure of research on the role play method is insufficient practice time, preventing students to understanding and speaking fluently in Chinese during role play dialogues. What students are currently doing is still at the reading stage, their body movements do not align with the practice required by the theme.

Abstract

This study examines the roles of translanguaging practices in the linguistic landscape in a rural tourism area and their contribution to showcasing cultural identity from the perspective of activity theory. Translanguaging emerges as a significant tool in rural tourism, serving as a cultural hub where diverse linguistic and cultural expressions intersect to attract visitors with their unique nature, heritage, and traditions. Through an analysis of activity theory, this study explores the translanguaging practices of signage containing verbal and other multimodal semiotic resources at Alamendah in constructing and promoting tourism activities and its local cultural identity. The data were gathered from photographs of signage, observation, and interviews with the tourism manager, staff, and the local elder to see how translanguaging practices enable the community to showcase the local heritage and engage with local and global audiences. The findings revealed that translanguaging practices as the mediating tool seen from the 182 signage where 51 (29%) were written in monolingual, which is Indonesian that represents the official language, 71 % were written in bilingual or multilingual, combining Indonesian, English, Sundanese, and Sundanese old scripts. The use of Indonesian and Sundanese dominated the signage, indicating the strong local cultural representation and identity. The prevalent use of Sundanese exemplifies the heightened community awareness of the Sundanese heritage identity with the expectation that visitors would learn more about the language and culture through tourism activities. The community and other stakeholders` contribution to the public signage signifies distributive and creative power relations and division of labor.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of the message in the multimodal post "Bakiak Game" on Instagram G20 2022. This is to see how the Bakiak Game is depicted and what reflects its ideology. The focus of this research is on describing the ideational meaning of verbal and visual data. This research method is qualitative with a multimodal discourse analysis approach. The data source for this research is multimodal posts in the form of a combination of visual mode (image) and verbal mode (caption). The post in question is a post about "The Game of Bakiak" which was uploaded on social media Instagram G20 2022. Based on the analysis of the verbal mode, material processes, relational processes and behavioral processes were found in describing the game of Bakiak. Of these three processes, the material process is very dominant. This shows that Bakiak is described as a physical sport carried out by humans in groups. Apart from that, in the image mode, an actional narrative process is found. This is in line with the ideational meaning in the verbal mode, namely that this post describes a physical sport carried out in a group and coordinated. Ideologically, this game has the moral value of cooperation and team coordination. In the context of the spirit and moral values of the G20, it needs to be adopted by the global community, especially the G20 countries, in facing the challenges after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This research is an experimental study entitled “Innovation of Jamu Beras Kencur into a Healthy Processed Food Product: Custard Pudding.” It is motivated by the declining interest of the younger generation in consuming jamu, which is one of Indonesia’s traditional beverages rich in health benefits. This situation led to the idea of innovating jamu into a European-style dessert, namely custard pudding. Custard pudding was chosen because it is highly favoured by the public. However, due to its milk content which can cause allergies, some people are unable to consume it. This study aims to explore the process of transforming jamu beras kencur into a custard pudding product. In addition, this research seeks to increase the interest of the younger generation in enjoying jamu in order to preserve Indonesian cultural heritage. This experiment employed purposive sampling as the data collection technique. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires and interviews distributed to 30 respondents. The data analysis techniques used were organoleptic tests and hedonic tests, followed by calculating the mean scores to determine the evaluation results based on predetermined aspects. The findings of the study, after conducting experiments and collecting data, revealed that the average organoleptic test scores for beras kencur custard pudding were 3.5 for taste, 3.3 for aroma, 3.3 for color, and 3.7 for texture. Meanwhile, the hedonic test resulted in an average score of 3.4. It can be concluded that the innovation of jamu beras kencur into a healthy food product in the form of custard pudding is acceptable to the public.

Abstract

Critical literacy is essential to be implemented in this 21st-century education. However, the implementation of it remains underexplored, especially in the Indonesian context. This study aims to investigate the implementation of critical literacy in teaching exposition texts and its impacts on students' critical language awareness. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, the research involved an English teacher and thirty-six tenth-grade students of a public senior high school in one district in West Java, Indonesia. Data were collected through classroom observations. The data were analyzed using deductive thematic analysis based on the four-dimension framework of critical literacy and the five-step guided instructional approach as the guideline. Findings indicated that the teacher has successfully implemented the critical literacy strategies in teaching exposition texts. Furthermore, the practices enhanced students’ critical language awareness by encouraging analytical text evaluation. However, there were two main challenges, particularly in engaging with socio-political issues and taking action since both the teacher and students were still unfamiliar with the discussion of sensitive issues. The study highlights the practical and pedagogical benefits of critical literacy in underrepresented educational settings, contributing to the preparation of a globally competitive and socially aware generation.

Abstract

While existing research on copywriting primarily assesses the impact of promotional content on audiences, there is a notable lack of studies exploring how copywriting is taught and practiced within language education. This study addresses this gap by examining the strategies employed by English language students at a state polytechnic in Indonesia as they create tourism promotional videos. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis approach, the research investigates students' final reports to identify key patterns and gaps in their copywriting practices. Findings reveal that while students demonstrated creativity and effectively showcases local cultural and natural attractions through engaging language, their work often lacked depth in audience profiling, inclusion of practical travel information, and alignment between video duration and selected media platforms. These limitations reduced the communicative effectiveness of their content. The study highlights the importance of integrating copywriting instruction into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curricula, particularly in vocational education, to better prepare students for real-world communication tasks. Implications for ESP course design and project-based learning in language instruction are also discussed.
