Abstract

The application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is increasingly important in the construction industry because it can improve efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration. One aspect that is greatly influenced by BIM is the preparation of the Bar Bending Schedule (BBS), a detailed document regarding the quantity, dimensions, shape, and weight of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete elements. Manual preparation of the BBS tends to be time-consuming and produces significant waste material due to suboptimal cutting. This study aims to analyze the application of Autodesk Revit integrated with the Sofistik plugin in creating the BBS and compare it with conventional methods. The case study was conducted on the construction project of the Lecturer Room Building and Multipurpose Room of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Andalas University. Data were obtained from Detailed Engineering Drawings (DED), material specifications, and interviews with contractors. The research stages include three-dimensional structural modeling, verification with clash detection, reinforcement modeling, BBS creation using Revit–Sofistik, and optimization of 12-meter-long reinforcing bar cutting using Excel Solver. The research results show that conventional methods require five to six weeks, while Revit–Sofistik only takes three weeks, or even two weeks, from the reinforcement stage to the BBS output, with a time efficiency of 45–66 percent. Bar cutting optimization can reduce material waste to below three percent. These findings prove that the Revit–Sofistik integration can accelerate the BBS process while reducing material waste, even though the cutting optimization function is not yet fully integrated into the BIM flow.

Abstract

Surface coating methods provide protection for porous concrete surfaces against water diffusion, which can otherwise lead to structural damage and a reduction in concrete's service life. This study aims to assess the impact of varying quantities of biosynthesized TiO2 and coconut shell-derived carbon on concrete surface hydrophobicity and to compare their effectiveness in enhancing it. SEM analysis confirmed that the Organosilicone-based hydrophobic coating with 0,20 g of TiO2 and 0,20 g of carbon was uniformly distributed, covering micropores, and increasing concrete surface roughness. EDS analysis indicated a decrease in the Ca element peak and the absence of elements like Al, Fe, and K, validating the success of the concrete surface coating. FTIR analysis revealed the emergence of new absorption bands, such as 2963 cm-1 (aliphatic C-H bonds of Organosiliconee) and 477 cm-1 (Ti-O bonds), on the hydrophobic concrete surface. Contact angle measurements demonstrated hydrophobic behavior, with the B/Organosiliconee/TiO2 sample exhibiting an angle of up to 122,4º and the B/Organosiliconee/C sample up to 138,3º. Consequently, carbon derived from coconut shell waste emerges as a viable alternative for hydrophobic surface applications due to its superior hydrophobicity properties compared to TiO2.

Abstract

This qualitative study develops and evaluates a mentorship-based educational model designed to facilitate the transfer of occupational health and safety knowledge from veteran seafarers to maritime cadets in Indonesian maritime vocational institutions. While maritime graduates receive comprehensive technical training aligned with Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) standards, they often report feeling unprepared for the health and safety challenges they face at sea, indicating significant gaps in experiential knowledge transfer. The study conducted interviews with 20 veteran seafarers, 12 maritime lecturers, and 15 cadets, alongside a pilot implementation across three BPSDMP institutions. The findings identify key tacit knowledge areas that are insufficiently addressed in current curricula, particularly in practical emergency response adaptation (100% stakeholder recognition), fatigue self-management (94.7%), and psychological coping strategies (91.5%). The research reveals strong support for structured mentorship programs, emphasizing one-on-one relationships (100% cadet endorsement), post-graduation continuation (100% lecturer/cadet support), and weekly digital communication (100%). However, the successful implementation of these programs requires significant professional development for lecturers to facilitate mentorship roles (2.0-point capacity gap), formal institutional policies to legitimize mentorship, and preparation for veterans in pedagogical techniques. Pilot results demonstrate the feasibility of this model across diverse contexts, with high cadet knowledge gains (4.4/5.0 average) and veteran satisfaction (4.6/5.0), though variations across institutions highlight enabling conditions that influence outcomes. This study provides evidence-based implementation guidelines for BPSDMP institutions, offering a roadmap for integrating veteran experiential wisdom into maritime education, with implications for improving both the technical competence and resilience of future maritime professionals.

Abstract

The sustainable availability of clean water is crucial for supporting academic, residential, and institutional operational activities in higher education settings. In general, previous research has primarily focused on clean water planning at the city or regional level, without examining the need and availability of water on boarding campuses that have distinct consumption patterns and distribution systems. This research aims to fill the gap by conducting an integrated evaluation of water needs and availability, serving as the basis for preparing a water management master plan at the West Sumatra IPDN Campus. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative analysis based on SNI 03-7065-2005 to estimate water needs with qualitative analysis of infrastructure conditions and water quality through field surveys, interviews, and laboratory tests. The results showed that the water demand reached 92,150 liters/day (1.1 liters per second), while the source capacity was 5.03 liters per second, resulting in a surplus of 1,839%. Although the water supply was quantitatively adequate, quality tests revealed turbidity and bacteriological contamination at some distribution points, attributed to the corrosion of galvanized pipes and the absence of secondary filtration. This confirms that sufficient quantity does not guarantee the quality and efficiency of distribution. Therefore, network modernization, the implementation of layered filtration, and periodic monitoring are necessary. This research contributes to the development of a sustainable campus water management model in Indonesia.
