Abstract

The decline that occurs influences functions in the body, one of them functions in the cavity mouth that produces saliva. The declining rate of saliva flow is caused by the existing decline function of salivary glands in the elderly. Research Objectives: Producing a Model Senam Mulut Lansia (SEMULA) in an effort to increase the function cavity mouth to rate saliva flow. Method: Research methods used in the research This is Research and Development (RD). The quasi-experimental design used study This is a pre-test - post-test, non-equivalent control group design. Taking a sample with a total sampling technique with criteria inclusion and exclusion consists of group interventions and group control. Oral exercises _ were done for 21 days for the elderly. Results: Research results This shows that there is influence before and after given treatment good in group intervention (p-value = 0.000) and control (p-value = 0.027). Test no in pairs rate salivary show the p- p-value is 0.044 (0.05), which is significant there is a difference in effectiveness between group interventions and groups control. There is possible improvement in the pre-test and post-test seen from the difference in the average of each group, where group intervention experienced an increase of 0.14 and in the group control only 0.05. Conclusion: Development of Model Senam Mulut Lansia (SEMULA) effective in increasing function rate saliva flow.

Abstract

Perineal laceration occurred during childbirth, either naturally or through episiotomy. One alternative for perineal wound healing was using a spray gel of Bajakah tampala stem extract, which had anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial benefits that helped accelerate perineal wound healing. The spray technique delivered the preparation directly to the wound without contact with cotton, reducing waste and preventing infection or contamination. This study aimed to determine the effect of Bajakah tampala stem extract spray gel (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) on perineal wound healing in postpartum women. The study was conducted at the Eka Setyowati midwife practice and Ngesrep Health Center from January to February 2024. It was a quasi-experiment with a pretest and posttest control group design. Using purposive sampling, 36 respondents were obtained and divided into two groups: the control group, which received dry clean wound care, and the intervention group, which was given Bajakah tampala stem extract spray gel three times a day for seven days with three sprays per application. The perineal wounds were measured using the REEDA scale (Redness, Edema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, Approximation) on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th days. The results showed a decrease in the REEDA score on post-test I (the 5th day), with an average score of 2.78 in the intervention group compared to the control group, which had an average REEDA score of 5.72. The administration of Bajakah tampala stem extract spray gel (Spatholobus littoralis Hassk.) affected perineal wound healing in postpartum women based on the REEDA score.

Abstract

Self-medication is an act of self-treatment performed by the community to overcome toothache. Many people who suffer from toothache choose to self-medicate with pain killers or herbal medicines. The phenomenon of self-medication arose because people felt that self-medication was an easier and more practical option than going to the dentist. The aim of the study was to determine the factors that influence the self-medication behaviour of patients with toothache in the community. The research method used was descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was the community of Batudaa district, and the sample was taken through accidental sampling method using questioner by google form. The results showed that majority of the respondents (91.66%) had practiced self-medication, 33.97% of them used chemical drugs while 41.02% combined chemical and herbal drugs. Mefenamic acid was the most commonly purchased analgesic from the pharmacy (33.97%), while saline solution was the most commonly used herbal medicine (42.94%). The main reason for self-medication by respondents was convenience and practicality (33.33%), followed by experience of recovery with the same medicine (30.76%), and several other reasons were given by respondents. This study found that personal knowledge and previous experience by themselves or peers significantly influenced the choice of medication, including easier, quicker and can be done by themselves, save cost, time and can return to activities immediately. The conclusion of this study emphasises that self-medication behaviour is influenced by convenience and practicality factors, with recommendations for the community to increase knowledge about the use of analgesics and to consult medical personnel before initiating any medication regimen and symptoms do not improve.

Abstract

Background: Health is the most important aspect of human life, both physically and mentally. Oral and dental health plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's functional balance. Tooth loss can disrupt chewing, nutrition, and overall quality of life. However, it can be managed with the use of dentures. One of the challenges in dental impression-taking is the gag reflex, which can be minimized by selecting the appropriate impression tray and optimizing the setting time of alginate. Innovations such as temperature sensors for real-time monitoring and music therapy can enhance accuracy and patient comfort.Method: This study employs the Research and Development (R&D) method, which involves stages of information gathering, product design, expert validation, and product testing. The research respondents consist of operators (medical personnel) who perform dental impressions. Data is analyzed using statistical tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed device.Result: The research results indicate that the use of Smart Dental Impression Trays significantly enhances operator satisfaction, with a mean score of 4.80 ± 0.422 compared to the control group at 3.60 ± 0.699 (p-value = 0.001).Conclusion: Smart Dental Impression Trays are effective in enhancing operator satisfaction during the dental impression procedure. This innovation has the potential to be a solution for dental healthcare services in improving the quality of dental impressions.Keywords: Smart dental impression trays, operator satisfaction, temperature sensor, relaxation music

Abstract

Oral health issues are prevalent among the elderly due to physiological aging, which often leads to decreased oral muscle function and impairs essential activities such as mastication, swallowing, and salivary secretion. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of oral stimulation exercises in improving these oral functions in elderly individuals. A pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was conducted involving 28 elderly participants in Pedalangan Village, Semarang, Indonesia. Participants received regular oral stimulation exercises, and assessments were made before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, with paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon tests applied accordingly. The results demonstrated significant improvements in salivary flow rate (p = 0.018), swallowing function (p = 0.000), and mastication ability (p = 0.004). These findings suggest that oral stimulation exercises are an effective non-pharmacological strategy to enhance oral functions among the elderly, potentially improving their overall health and quality of life.

Abstract

Background: The dental mouth mirror is a primary diagnostic tool used by oral health professionals to examine the condition of the oral cavity. However, conventional mouth mirrors often face obstacles. Around 53% of dental health professionals report difficulties in providing care due to frequent fogging and dirt accumulation on the mirror surface. Field examinations also often encounter problems due to limited lighting. Patient comfort must also be considered during procedures, as it affects the healing process. Therefore, an innovative dental examination instrument with integrated lighting was developed to enhance patient comfort during treatment.Method: This study used a Research and Development (R&D) approach along with a true experimental design, specifically a posttest-only with control group design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, involving 60 dental filling patients who met the inclusion criteria. Product testing data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, and the Mann-Whitney test.Result: Expert validation of the dental examination instrument with integrated lighting yielded an average feasibility score of 83.3% (classified as highly feasible) with a p-value of 0.00. The effectiveness test of the tool showed a significant improvement in patient comfort (p = 0.000).Conclusion: The dental examination instrument with integrated lighting has been validated and proven effective in improving patient comfort during dental filling procedures performed by oral health professionals.

Abstract

Background: Blind children have limited vision so that the health of the oral cavity is lower than that of children with normal vision. To improve the dental and oral health of blind children, a change in skills is needed. Choosing the right method of delivering educational material is very helpful in changing target skills. Kurnia's Web-based Drill method with audio modification can be an innovation in providing dental and oral health education. Where audio media that relies on sound can help optimize the sense of hearing that is still functioning so that the message conveyed can be easily remembered and understood by blind children.Research Objective: Build a web-based model of Kurnia's Drill method to improve toothbrushing skills in blind children.Methods: Research and Development (R&D) and model testing (Quasi-Experimental Control Group Pretest and Posttest Design studies). The research subjects of blind children were divided into 2 groups, namely intervention and control. The results of the model design are validated by experts. The data were tested using intraclass, paired t-test and independent t-test correlation coefficients.Results: Kurnia's Drill web-based method is feasible as an educational model for dental health maintenance in blind children (p= 0.000). The implementation of this model effectively improved the brushing skills of blind children (p= 0.047) and decreased the debris index of blind children (p= 0.000) compared to the control group.Conclusion: Kurnia's Drill web-based method effectively improves brushing skills and decreases debris index in visually impaired children.
