Abstract

Observing the health of Kintamani dogs, especially at geriatric age, is important as an effort to preserve their lives. Observations of the integumentary system can provide information related to clinical animal health. This study aims to determine the integumentary condition of Kintamani dogs macroscopically at geriatric age. This study used 5 Kintamani dogs of geriatric age with a healthy clinical condition. The research procedure was carried out by macroscopic observation of hair and skin by inspection and palpation methods. The results showed that the hair of geriatric dog samples experienced changes in color and texture when compared to productive age Kintamani dogs. Observation of skin flexibility showed that the skin flexibility of geriatric dogs was lower when compared to productive-age Kintamani dogs. Observations of the hair strength of Kintamani dogs showed that at the average geriatric age it was difficult to pull out during manual combing with the observer's hand.  This observation shows that the integumentary system of geriatric Kintamani dogs is macroscopically not much different from productive-age Kintamani dogs.

Abstract

Hemangioma is a common benign tumor that originates from blood and lymphatic vessels, occurring in both humans and animals. In dogs, these tumors are primarily found on the skin. This case report highlights the first reported incidence of vulvar hemangioma in a Kintamani dog. The complete blood count showed the animals had leukocytosis. Total excision of the tumor mass was performed, and postoperatively, the dog was given analgesic and antibiotic with tolfenamic acid and amoxicillin, respectively for 5 consecutive days. Topical antibiotic neomycin sulfate was also given on the surgical site. Prognosis for this case was considered good based on the nature of the tumor and its location. Based on postoperative monitoring, it can be concluded that the treatment was successful without any recurrence.

Abstract

Background: Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) frequently share their habitat with humans, leading to conflicts, especially when habitat disturbances force them to exploit human food sources. In response, humans sometimes use air rifles to deter these animals. Preventive measures such as sterilization programs, habitat restoration, and public education about responsible interactions with macaques are essential to reduce the occurrence of such incidents and promote coexistence. Purpose: This report describes the anesthesia and surgical management of gunshot wounds in long-tailed macaques. Case(s): Two adult free-ranging male long-tailed macaques in the Ubud Monkey Forest, Bali, Indonesia, were presented with gunshot wounds on the inguinal region and right caudal pelvic area, respectively. These macaques were captured and anesthetized for a scheduled vasectomy. A detailed clinical examination indicated that the projectiles were lodged in the subcutaneous tissue. Based on their shape and size, the projectiles were suspected to be 0.177 caliber (4.5 mm) air rifle pellets. Case Management: Surgical removal was performed to extract the air rifle pellets. Preoperatively, the macaques received amoxicillin (15 mg/kg BW, IM), ketorolac (2.5 mg/kg BW, IM), and Visine® eye lubricant. Propofol was used for anesthetic maintenance (1 mg/kg BW, IV). Following pellet removal, the wound was sutured with monofilament absorbable poliglecaprone 25, and the planned vasectomy was conducted using the bilateral incision method. Postoperatively, the macaques were administered atipamezole (0.02 mg/kg BW, IM) for anesthesia reversal, placed in recovery cages in lateral recumbency, and closely monitored. Conclusion: Once the macaques showed clear signs of recovery from anesthesia, they were transported back to the capture site and released into their original group.

Abstract

Femoral fracture is damage or loss of continuity of femoral bone tissue with or without displacement of bone fragments. Femoral fractures are often caused by mechanical trauma. A 3-month-old crossbreed dog, weighing 4 kg and male, complained of swelling, unable to walk and the right leg could not support. Based on owner information, the case dog was hit by a vehicle two days earlier. The results of the radiographic examination, the dog had an oblique fracture of the right femoral diaphysis with a prognosis of fausta. Treatment was carried out by surgery using internal fixation of intramedullary pins using general anaesthesia, a combination of xylazine and ketamine. Postoperatively, the antibiotic cefotaxime was given at a dose of 20 mg/kg/q12h (IV), followed by cefadroxil syrup at a dose of 25 mg/kg/q12h analgesic meloxicam tablets at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg/q24h. One week after surgery, a radiographic examination was carried out, the results showed that the pin was pushed up. The second operation was performed to correct the installation of the first pin. After the second operation, the antibiotic amoxicillin syrup (R/Amoxsan) was given at a dose of 20 mg/kgq8h, analgesic mefenamic acid tablets at a dose of 30 mg/kg/q12h and calcium carbonate (R/Osteocal) at a dose of 66 mg/kg/q24h to accelerate the callus formation process. Thirteen days after the operation, the wound had dried well and the dog was able to set its legs and run although it was still limping. The results of the X-Ray radiography thirty-four days after the operation showed that callus had formed on the fracture fragment of the femur bone. It is recommended that surgery be performed immediately to avoid the formation of callus at the end of the fracture and after the installation of the intramedullary pin, periodic radiographic examinations are carried out to determine the position of the pin in the bone marrow.

Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country with a diverse range of herpetofauna, one of which is the Trimeresurus insularis snake, a highly venomous species endemic to Indonesia. This snake is distributed across Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Wetar Island in Maluku Province. Despite its wide distribution, this species exhibits variations in body coloration. T. insularis from Bali is green, while those from Komodo Island are blue; however, both share the same red tail. This study aims to examine the morphology and morphometry of erythrocytes and leukocytes in T. insularis from different localities and color variations. The research utilized blood smear preparations from six healthy T. insularis individuals—three green coloration from Bali and three blue coloration from Komodo Island—analyzed using a microscope and Optilab Viewer camera. Cell morphometry was measured using ImageJ software. The morphometric measurements of erythrocytes included the length and width of the cytoplasm and nucleus, while leukocyte morphometry covered the cytoplasmic and nuclear diameters of heterophils, basophils, eosinophils, azurophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes. The erythrocyte morphology of T. insularis from both Bali and Komodo Island showed no differences. Morphometric data were analyzed using the Independent-Samples T Test. The results showed significant differences in the length and width of the erythrocyte nucleus, as well as in the cytoplasmic and nuclear diameters of lymphocytes. Meanwhile, no significant differences were found in erythrocyte length and width, as well as in the cytoplasmic and nuclear diameters of heterophils, basophils, eosinophils, and monocytes.
