Abstract

One of the culinary arts related to culture and creativity is bread. Bread making in Indonesia generally refers to the open-top bread from England which began to be popular in the 1800s. This type of bread is also commonly called white bread in Indonesia. This type of open-top bread is also known as sandwich bread in America after World War II. This type of bread has also become a cultural product that has become the cultural identity of England and America. This study focuses on how Jiwa Toast as an Indonesian brand builds a bread menu that is in accordance with Indonesian culture and commodifies culture through posters. This study uses a constructivist paradigm approach, with qualitative methods and theories of signification and habitus as analytical tools. The results of the study show that the collaborative advertising poster for the "Beef Rendang" and "Tuna Lando Mundo" menus combines local and global elements. Denotatively, the poster features close-up images of both dishes to showcase the deliciousness of the products, while the text and visual symbols emphasize the unique collaboration between local Indonesian food and global inspiration. Connotatively, rendang symbolizes traditional values, authentic cooking processes, and Indonesian cultural heritage. In contrast, "Tuna Lando Mundo" implies a modern and global feel, creating a refreshing blend of flavors. This commodification shows how original cultural meanings can be replaced by commercial values, following the trend of consumerism.

Abstract

Films not only function as a form of entertainment but also reflect social values and gender relations within society. One of the recurring issues represented in films is the positioning of women as secondary subjects under patriarchal structures. This study aims to analyze the representation of woman as the Other experienced by Eilis Lacey in Brooklyn (2015) using Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminist theory. The reserach employed a qualitative descriptive method with documentation techniques. The collected data were analyzed based on Beauvoir’s concept of woman as the Other. The findings reveal four forms of women’s otherness represented in the film, namely dependency on others, social control and economic limitations, appearance-based judgment and social control and external influence. These findings indicate that Eilis's identity and life decisions are influenced by patriarchal values and external expectations that position her as a secondary subject. However, the film also portrays her gradual development toward greater autonomy, demonstrating her ability to challenge social pressures and assert her own identity. This study contributes to feminist film criticism by providing a deeper understanding of how the concept of woman as the Other is represented in cinematic narratives and by encouraging critical awareness of gender representation in contemporary films.

Abstract

Movie posters function as promotional media that convey messages through verbal and visual signs. This research aims to identify the verbal and visual signs found in 1984 movie posters and analyze their meanings based on Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. The data of this research were obtained from the official 1984 movie poster published on IMDb. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method using documentation as the data collection technique. Ferdinand de Saussure's theory on signification through the association between the signifier and the signified was utilized in analyzing the data. Regarding the findings, the movie poster comprises of three verbal symbols like: headline, title, and baseline as well as five visual symbols which include: Big Brother’s face, man and woman, color, typography and layout. These symbols possess certain meanings with regard to dictatorship, surveillance, oppression, rebellion and social control respectively. Thus, the movie poster 1984 acts not only as an advertising tool but also conveys the ideology of the movie.

Abstract

This study evaluates how library promotion strategies can shift primary students from campaign-based participation to sustained reading habits. Conducted at a primary school in Indonesia, the research employed a qualitative descriptive design using observations, semi-structured interviews with librarians, teachers, and students, and document analysis of logs and circulation records, and photographs if available, to document implementation processes closely. Data were coded inductively and triangulated across sources. Three key initiatives emerged: interactive read-aloud sessions, a curated reading corner, and a daily 15-minute independent-reading routine. Together, these initiatives were associated with increases in library visits and borrowing frequency. Read-alouds modeled fluent reading and introduced new vocabulary; the reading corner broadened interest-aligned choice; and the daily window normalized sustained reading. Constraints that moderated impact included limited collection breadth, constrained facilities and opening hours, and uneven teacher participation. Practical implications include pairing read-alouds with brief discussion prompts, maintaining a regularly refreshed, student co-curated reading corner, institutionalizing a short daily reading slot with light scaffolds, and formalizing teacher-librarian planning for collection development and class-linked mini-lessons. The study contributes by reframing promotion from event-based outreach to routine-embedded practice and by clarifying the enabling conditions required to convert promotional visibility into everyday reading behaviors in primary education.
