Abstract

This study aims to analyze the prediction of social support role on rural teaching commitment (RTC), with learning engagement as a mediator. The study involved 350 prospective teachers at the undergraduate and professional teacher education (PPG) levels in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using the Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The results showed that the majority of respondents had moderate levels of social support, learning engagement, and RTC. Specific findings indicate that emotional support is the most fundamental social support item in forming engagement. The PLS-SEM analysis confirmed the prediction that learning engagement functions as a strong partial mediator. Although social support contributes directly to teaching commitment in remote areas, its influence becomes even more significant when mediated by learning engagement, namely vigor, dedication, and absorption. However, the current RTC component remains dominated by the normative aspect (obligation), indicating a risk of low teacher retention. This study concludes that teacher placement policies cannot rely solely on administrative and normative approaches; they must integrate strengthening the basic capital within prospective teachers with a conducive school and community environment to create a sustainable commitment in rural areas of Indonesia. Furthermore, this study highlights the need for curriculum reform in both undergraduate teacher education and professional teacher education programs. These curricula should be deliberately designed to internalize key dimensions such as social support, learning engagement, and long-term teaching commitment. This can be achieved by integrating structured learning experiences, including community-based teaching practices, reflective activities, mentoring systems, and immersion programs in rural contexts. Such initiatives are expected to not only enhance prospective teachers’ adaptive capacities but also strengthen their emotional attachment, sense of purpose, and resilience in undertaking teaching assignments in underserved areas. Keywords: learning engagement, social support, rural teaching commitment, pre-service teacher, PLS-SEM.

Abstract

Classroom observations in an eleventh-grade class at Muhammadiyah 1 Senior High School Sragen revealed low student engagement and limited poetry writing skills. To address this issue, this study examined the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) supported by Liveworksheets electronic student worksheets in poetry writing instruction. Using a descriptive qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with Indonesian language teachers, and questionnaires administered to 26 eleventh-grade students. The data were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s framework, with credibility ensured through data triangulation. The findings indicate improved student engagement, increased participation in learning tasks, and more positive perceptions of the learning process. Students also demonstrated greater involvement in collaborative dialogue during poetry writing activities. These results suggest that integrating interactive digital worksheets with problem-based learning can enhance student engagement and support the development of poetry writing skills at the senior secondary level.

The collected data were then analyzed using the interactive analysis technique of the Miles and Huberman model, with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation/verification and conclusions. This research was conducted in the odd semester of the 2025/2026 academic year at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta which was chosen because it has adequate facilities that can integrate application-based learning media. The validity of the research data used technical triangulation. The implementation of Educandy media was carried out through three stages, namely the preparation stage, the learning implementation stage, and the closing or evaluation stage. The novelty in this research lies in the use of Educandy with a gamification approach for learning fantasy story vocabulary in junior high schools, which has implications for the research findings, namely increasing vocabulary variation, student participation, ease of understanding vocabulary through interactive games, and changes in the learning atmosphere to be more fun and collaborative.

Abstract

Creative thinking is an important competency in facing the challenges of the 21st century, and literature is a medium for developing this ability. This article aims to uncover the representation of characters' creative thinking and the relationship between plot dynamics in the novel Bumi by Tere Liye. The study focuses on the main characters, namely Raib, Seli, and Ali, showing their creative thinking processes in dealing with conflicts and the dynamics of the storyline that support the development of creativity. The approach used is qualitative with content analysis techniques. Data were obtained from novel texts using intensive recording techniques of dialogues, narratives, and characters' actions that indicate the dimension of creative thinking. Analysis refers to creative thinking indicators that include fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The study's results show that the three main characters have different representations of creative thinking. Ali stands out more for fluency and flexibility. Raib shows originality in discovering his identity and distinctive strengths. Seli shows elaboration through creative actions that are directed and applicable in crises. The plot's progressive, surprising, and conflict-driven dynamics support the emergence of the characters' creative actions, forming an integration between characters and events. This study confirms that the novel Bumi not only presents fantasy stories but also serves as a relevant medium for developing creative thinking skills through creative literacy.

Abstract

This research aims to critically evaluate high school Indonesian language textbooks from the perspective of developing students' creative thinking. The type of research in this study is qualitative. The research design used is a case study. Primary data was obtained directly from Indonesian language textbooks used in high school. Secondary data includes related documents, such as curriculum, textbook development guidelines, and relevant academic literature. The data collection technique is an intensive reading technique. The data analysis technique in this research involves several stages. The first stage is transcription and organizing data. The second stage is thematic analysis. The third stage is data triangulation. The fourth stage is interpretation and preparation of the report. The research results show that this book has been prepared in accordance with national curriculum standards and covers various basic competencies. Several aspects still need to be improved to better support the development of students' creative thinking. The tasks are dominated by mechanical activities, so they do not fully support the development of critical and creative thinking. Apart from that, the relevance of the material to actual issues and students' real lives is still lacking.
