Abstract

Cardiovascular disease caused by hyperlipidemia is the highest case in term of fatality of non-infectious disease in Indonesia. Cnidoscolus chayamansa is well known as a herb that has nutraceutical potential for medicine and likely as a hypolipidemia agent. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the optimal dose of C. chayamansa as a candidate to treat cardiovascular diseases. A total of 30 white rats were acclimatized in the laboratory for 14 days. After that, the rats were grouped into six groups, randomly, which including a healthy control group (K0), a negative control group or hyperlipidemic rats (K-), a positive control group or hyperlipidemia-induced rats that was supplemented with atorvastatin (K+), then a hyperlipidemic rats treated with alcoholic extract of C. chayamansa leaves at doses of 100 mg /kgBB /day for K1, 200 mg/ kgBB/ day for K2 and 400 mg/ KgBB/ day for K3. The results showed that K3 treatment is the most effective and optimum dose for lowering total cholesterol level at 76.81±1.10 mg/dl, triglycerides 72.39±1.66 mg/dl and LDL-C at 21.47±0.58 mg/dl. The aortic histology assessment also showed that the K- group had putative thrombus or plaque in intima, and it was not found in other groups. This research focused on the optimum dose and new usage of C. chayamansa, as an anti-inflammatory in atherosclerosis. By understanding the optimum dose of C. chayamansa, the community can apply and control the herb consumption for their own therapeutic properties. For future application, the herb is potentially developed as anti-atherogenic medicine.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition caused by high cholesterol consumption. Tomatoes is well known has cholesterol-lowering effects. However, high consumption of tomato shall be concerned especially prooxidant potential that may damage the organ, especially in liver. This study aims to understand the effect of hypercholesterolemic and tomato administration to the rat’s liver, which is monitored using aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and histological condition. A total 24 of 12-weeks-old male-rats divided into 4 groups, equally. The K1 as normal group consist of placebo-treatment rats; K2 group as hypercholesterolemia group induced with high-cholesterol diet and 2 ml of cholesterol; K3 group was hypercholesterolemia rats treated with 20 mg of atorvastatin; and the last is K4 group was cholesterol rats supplemented with 16 mg/ day of tomato extract. All samples were treated for 60 days. The highest levels of AST and ALT level was 76.39 U/L and 45.40 U/L, respectively, was found in K2. Then, K4 is not significantly different from K3 and K1 and significantly different from K2. The scoring results showed that all groups experienced damage in the form of parenchymal degeneration, fat degeneration and necrosis. From this study it can be concluded that tomato extract gives a protection to the liver from cholesterol-oxidation damage effect. The updating information about how tomato inhibite liver fattening. The liver condition probably can be considered as biomarker-related hypercholesterolemia and developed a diagnostic marker to prevent increases metabolic disorder in community.

Abstract

The 2013 curriculum is related to four models that are recommended to be implemented, one of them is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The innovation of the PBL model is shown by the existence of scientific articles as students' media in solving problems. Excretory system material is a material related to students' daily activities regarding the process of excreting substances from the body and student's environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the PBL model assisted by scientific articles. This study is a Quasi-Experimental Research with Non-equivalent Control Group Design and the sampling technique used was simple random sampling. The research subjects were XI MIPA 1 (Control Class) and XI MIPA 2 (Experiment Class). The data obtained were in the form of cognitive scores (pre test and post test), skill scores, attitude scores, student responses, and teacher responses. The average score of the post test score for the experimental class was 68.75, and the posttest score for the control class was 62.50. Student psychomotor learning outcomes are categorized into good and very good criteria. Likewise, affective learning outcomes show all students have an attitude of discipline, honesty, responsibility, and cooperation. The results showed (1) there were differences in learning outcomes beetween classes using the PBL model assisted by scientific articles and the class using discovery model and student scores in the experimental class were higher, (2) the increase in learning outcomes of medium and high criteria class using the PBL PBL model assisted by scientific articles is better than the class using discovery model. Thus, the PBL model assisted by scientific articles is effective in improving student learning outcomes in the excretory system material
