Abstract

This study aimed at investigating primary English teachers’ perceptions and implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge in teaching English to young learners, and the consistency between the teachers’ perceptions and implementation of PCK in teaching English to young learners. This study involved three English teachers from three different primary schools in Buleleng regency which were selected by using Convenience sampling technique.  The research design was embedded QUAL-quan mixed method. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaire, observation sheet, and interview guide. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative. The study demonstrated that teachers had high perceptions of PCK. However, their PCK implementation was very low. Thus, there is no consistency between the perceptions and implementation of PCK. Moreover, based on the result of the interview, the teachers encountered some problems included difficulty in using English in speaking and writing, designing learning activities to facilitate students’ characteristics, choosing media that related to the material, and providing learning media due to lack of facility in the school. Therefore, schools administrators need to promote English teachers’ improvement of pedagogical content knowledge by proposing them to participate in the certain professional development program.

Abstract

The process of English Learning before and during Covid-19 pandemic is very difference. The learning process which is conducted at school has changed into distance learning process. All schools are required to implement e-learning to support the distance learning process. This study was aimed at analyzing students’ e-learning readiness toward the implementation of e-learning at SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan. A mixed-method research design utilizing concurrent embedded model which is a quantitative method as a primer method was employed in this study. A questionnaire of students’ e-learning readiness and an observation sheet were used to collect the data. The obtained data were then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of the study showed that the readiness of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan students in using e-learning in the context of distance learning is classified on ready category which still needs some improvement. From the four aspects of readiness assessed, there is one aspect that belongs to unready category that requires a little improvement, namely the technological aspect. Meanwhile, the other three aspects, namely aspects of innovation, people, and self-development belong to the ready category which requires a little improvement in its implementation.

Abstract

The learning process is influenced by various factors. One of the important factors is the learning media as a supporter of the learning process, especially in learning ESP subjects. This study aimed to developed English materials for Front Office based on student’s need analyses. The subjects of this research were one teacher at SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja as the head of the front office at the school, 35 students in the second semester in class 12 AP2 of SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja, and one of the front office staff who worked at Kutabex Hotel. A questionnaire and a checklist used as the instrument to obtaining the data in this study. The method of this research used the Design and Development (D&D) model. The data has been analyzed with descriptive qualitative research. The result shows that the findings are (1) the study was developed three topics, namely: handling group guest check-in, handling group guest check out, and financial transaction based on the student’s need. (2) The design of English materials contains input, content focus, language focus, and task. In the task, the design included four English basic skills, namely: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (3) The quality of the product belongs to very good quality based on the result of two expert judges.

Abstract

Rizwan Khan is one of the characters which can be the representation of Muslims living in United States. It is one of the characters existing in the film “My Name is Khan”. This study aimed to analyze the family values of the film and the prejudice toward Muslims living in United States. The research design of this study was content analysis which focused on how the family values appeared on the film and identify the prejudice in the film. It was found that there were three different family values, such as Indian family values, American White family values, and American Black family values. Each family has its own characteristic in raising their children. The prejudice toward Muslims was found in almost scenes of the film after the ninth of September tragedy. The prejudice led to the intolerance, hatred and violence. It influenced the economic, comfort and social life of Muslims living in United States. It can be concluded that every family has different ways in raising their children. In addition, not all Americans have tolerance and accept differences in their neighborhoods.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the perceptions and implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of teaching English to young learners by English primary teachers and analyze the consistency between the perceptions and implementation. This study used an embedded mixed method design with qualitative dominant. The sample subjects were 3 English teachers from different schools. The samples and schools were determined by using convenience sampling. Distributing questionnaire, observation, and interview were the main data collection techniques. The results showed the average score of the teachers’ perceptions was 3.6203 and in the interval 3.3335 ≤ M < 4.0005 which categorized high and in a strong qualification. The average frequency of teachers’ implementation was 4.7045 and in the interval 0.329 ≤ M < 5.0795 which categorized very low. Lastly, the consistency between the two showed no consistency between teachers’ perceptions and implementation of PCK. This inconsistency due to personal and institutional challenges faced by the observed teachers such as lack of time, ineffective students’ behavior management, textbook-based teaching material, non-qualified English education background and inadequate school facilities. Implications drawn from the findings regarding efforts on increasing teachers’ professional enthusiasm is discussed.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate teachers’ perceptions and their implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) as well as compare teachers’ perceptions and implementation of PCK in teaching English for young learners. There are 3 primary school English teachers from 3 different public primary schools in Badung regency who were selected by using convenience sampling techniques. A mix-method design embedded with dominant qualitative is used in this study. In collecting the data, questionnaires, observation sheets, and interview guides were used.  The data were analyzed through descriptive qualitative. The results showed that the teachers had a strong positive perception of PCK meanwhile the teachers had a very weak level in implementing pedagogical content knowledge in the class. After both of the data were compared, it found that there was a lack of consistency between the teachers' perceptions and implementation of PCK in teaching English for young learners. According to the result, it clarified that there were some problems that encountered by the teachers during teaching young learners such as problem in using English in teaching, dealing with students' different characteristics and backgrounds, having problem in using media and having a different view about strategies used.

Abstract

  Inclusive education has been increasing significantly in Singaraja and helping the students with special needs as well as getting their right to have a proper education. Since inclusive was a new policy in education, new research was needed to find out how the implementation and the obstacles faced in inclusive. This study was aimed at investigating the implementation of inclusive education by English teachers to teach slow learners included in a regular classroom. This research was conducted at SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja as one of the general schools which implemented inclusive education. This research was in the form of qualitative research with a case study method. The data were obtained through document study, interviews, and observations. The findings show that (1) the English teachers used same teachers' preparation and modified some activities in the learning process and used different assessment, and (2) there were also found supporting factors such as complete administration, a good way of transferring knowledge, used different assessment and also found challenging factors in implementing inclusive education such as lack of trained teacher, lack of inclusive policy, and lack of differentiation in instructions. Inclusive education has been implemented at SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja but still has to be improved.

Abstract

Saat ini, siswa dituntut untuk menjadi pembelajar mandiri, dan itu menjadi lebih menantang di masa pandemi ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis penerapan aktivitas self-editing untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis recount teks pada siswa SMA. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen dengan desain penelitian yang digunakan ialah post-test only control group design. Data dikumpulkan dari siswa kelas X. Ada dua kelas yang dipilih untuk dijadikan sampel penelitian ini. Untuk memperoleh data, peneliti menggunakan tes menulis. Setelah diberikan treatment, siswa diberikan post-test tentang menulis teks recount. Tulisan siswa dinilai menggunakan rubrik penilaian menulis. Hasilnya dibandingkan dan diperiksa untuk mengetahui pengaruh aktivitas self-editing terhadap tulisan siswa. Selanjutnya, effect size diukur untuk mengetahui seberapa besar pengaruh aktivitas self-editing terhadap keterampilan menulis siswa khususnya pada teks recount. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kelompok eksperimen adalah 83,05, dan kelompok kontrol adalah 80,26. Sedangkan simpangan baku pada kelompok eksperimen adalah 5,417, dan kelompok kontrol adalah 5,486. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari aktivitas self-editing terhadap keterampilan menulis siswa, khususnya dalam menulis teks recount

Abstract

Online learning encourages the used of several online learning platforms in order to do the learning activities. There are several online learning platforms that commonly used in school such as Edmodo, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, Zoom, etc. Google Classroom is one of the online learning platforms that commonly use in school. This platform is an application that provides the creation of classrooms in cyberspace. Google Classroom has many features that can be used as a means for the distribution of tasks, assignments submission as well as assessment. This study aimed to analyses teacher’s perception toward the used of Google Classroom in online learning in junior high school. In collecting the data, this article use mixed method with quantitative and qualitative phases in collecting and analyzing the data. The data were collected from questionnaire and interview. The result of the research showed that the teachers perceived that the implementation of Google Classroom as an online learning media could improve student performance. Moreover, the used of Google Classroom in school was beneficial for both teachers and students in order to do the learning process.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of the use of Quizizz application in the English learning process for tenth-grade students. To select the representative sample, a purposive sampling method was used. The research design was a pre-test post-test which was used to collect data. This research uses one class as the research sample, namely class X MIPA 6 which consists of 35 students from SMA Negeri 1 Negara. During the research, they were taught using Quizizz in English class. To collect data, a method of giving a test was used. The data obtained showed the result of t-count is 5.757 with a significant 0.000 and the value of t on the t-table is 1.690. From the calculation above, t-count is bigger than the t-table (5.757> 1.690) and the result of Sig. (2-tailed) <0.05. Therefore, it can be stated that there is any significant difference between student English learning achievement before and after the implementation of Quizizz and Quizizz affects students’ English achievement.
