Abstract

The problem of meeting the need for clean water has been a challenge in its own right in the last few decades, not only in Indonesia but also around the world. Fulfillment of clean water needs that are not optimal, especially drinking water, causes the community's need for drinking water not to be met. One solution to this problem is to utilize abundant sea water as a source of clean water for coastal communities by first purifying it. This seawater purification method is known as the desalination method, where the desalinated sea water will be separated from salt and other particles. One type of seawater desalination is the basin type, which is by using a reservoir as a container for storing seawater, then seawater. steam it with heat from sunlight so that the salt content and impurities contained in it will be separated completely because of the difference in each evaporation temperature. The design of a desalination device with a target of 8 liters per day of distilled yield, which will be used as consumption water for household needs, is expected to be a solution to this problem. Abstract

The decrease in conventional energy sources followed by the world's energy demand as well as mounting concern about climate change, the countries are competing to get new sources of environmentally friendly energy with large reserves. The utilization of CBM as a new energy is an option because of its huge reserves, more environmentally friendly than traditional fossil energy (CBM emissions are 0.39 tones/MWh) and energy efficiency equivalent to natural gas. Indonesia has huge CBM reserves (400 TCF) but has not been utilize optimally due to technological problems, government regulations, large investments and others. This issues plus geographical constraints also occurs in countries with huge CBMs resource such as Russia (450 TCF) and China (700 TCF). Meanwhile, USA (500 TCF) and Australia (500 TCF) already have more established rules and technology. It is necessary to conduct a comparative study from each country according to the applicable regulations to accelerate the utilization of CBM.

Abstract

Peatland fires are a problem every year in Indonesia especially in Sumatera Island. In Riau during the dry season, there will be peatland fires that are difficult to extinguish. There are several reasons for peatland fires and this study will analyze whether cigarette butts can cause peat fires or not. In this research peat sample was dried at 35-45°C and at temperature at 115°C to reduce water content in peat samples. Cigarette butts as a trigger were prepared with a length of 30 mm and tested on a bomb calorimeter to determine their calorific values. The cigarette butts with the highest HHV (High Heating Value) were used and burned on the surface of the peat sample by adding airflow to the sample with varying flow rates. The fastest of smoldering combustion propagation velocity was obtained 785 mm/hour for vertical direction and 1336 mm/hour for horizontal direction with speed of airflow of 5 m/s. The highest temperature was obtained in the experiment of 902°C with the speed of airflow of 5 m/s.

Abstract

The area of Binamang Village has potential area to develop its plantation. Besides being suitable for planting oil palm and rubber commodities, Binamang village is also suitable to be developed by its plantations in the commodities of brown, gambier and gaharu. This is also supported by the large amount of marginal (non productif) land that has not been used in the village of Binamang. However, some of these marginal area are the Koto Panjang PLTA lake catchment area. Clear and detailed mapping is need to classify of marginal area which is potential to be used as plantation land in this area. This is done so that there will be no conflicts in the future. In addition, this mapping data is also useful as information data for potential investors who intend to invest their funds in the plantation sector in Binamang Village. To classify the marginal area which is not the Koto Panjang hydropower (PLTA) lake catchment area, a team of lecturers from the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Riau carried out community service activities in the village of Binamang, in the form of build maps of marginal area that could potentially be used as plantation / agriculture. This map is equipped with a geospatial information system. This mapping activity was carried out by using aerial photographing methods through Unmanned Aircraft by involving students of Riau University and local village equipment. This aerial photography activity is carried out at an altitude of 250 meters above ground level. With this method, all marginal areas in Binamang village can be mapped quickly and in detail. Based on calculations carried out through aerial photographic maps that have been injected with GPS coordinates, the marginal area that has the potential to be developed into plantations in Binamang Village is about 40 hectares. This result can be a reference for relevant stakeholders in planning the development of plantation areas in Binamang Village. The results of aerial maps can also be used by local policy makers in planning the spatial layout of Binamang Village.
