Abstract

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of understanding among fifth-grade students at SDN 21 Pilubang regarding the material on learning about the books of Allah in Islamic Religious Education. The pre-cycle results showed that only 11% of students achieved learning completeness with a score of ≥80, while the majority of students were still below the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM). This condition was influenced by the use of a lecture method that lacked variety, causing students to become passive, bored, and unenthusiastic in learning. To overcome this problem, this study applied the Make a Match method as a cooperative learning strategy that emphasized student activity in finding pairs of question and answer cards interactively. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, with 15 fifth-grade students as research subjects. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively, quantitatively, and qualitatively. The results showed a significant increase in student understanding. In cycle I, learning completeness increased in terms of activity, although the achievement rate was still only 11%. However, in cycle II, the percentage of learning completeness rose to 38%, with teacher and student activity reaching 100%. Thus, the Make a Match method proved to be effective in improving students' understanding in learning about the books of Allah.

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that can counteract free radicals. The macroalgae Euchema cottonii belongs to a type of seaweed from the Rhodophyta which is thought to have antioxidant activity. In this study, the antioxidant activity was tested using the CUPRAC method using spectrophotometry at 450 nm and the determination of total phenolic compounds in the extract and macroalgae fraction Eucheuma cottonii using the Folin Ciocalteu method. The extraction method was carried out using the maceration method with 70% ethanol and fractionation using ECC with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water (20% v/v). The results of TLC monitoring of Eucheuma cottonii showed the presence of flavonoid compounds, phenols, alkaloids, steroids, and triterpenoids. The results of the antioxidant activity test showed that the EC50 for the ethanol extract and the n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water fractions were 89.11; 143.40; 100.02 and 90.22 g/ml respectively with EC50 vitamin C as a comparison of 6,86 g/ml. The results of the determination of the total phenolate content of the ethanol extract and the fractions of n- hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water were 2.77; 1.96; 2.76; and 3.09 mg/GAE per 100 mg extract. The ethanol extract had a strong antioxidant activity with an EC50  89.11 g/ml and the highest total phenol content was in the methanol-water fraction of 3.09 mg/GAE per 100 mg extract. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of the macroalga Eucheuma cottonii has the potential as an alternative source of antioxidants.

Abstract

Acne is a skin disease that often occurs in adolescence and even adulthood, characterized by the presence of blackheads, papules, pustules, nodes, and cysts on the face, neck, upper arms, chest, and back. Although not life-threatening, acne can affect a person's quality of life by giving a bad psychological effect in the way a person assesses, perceives and responds to his condition and situation. The aim of this study is to asses the antibacterial activity of the extract and fraction of the macroalgae Euchema cottonii against acne-causing bacteria, namely Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The extraction method used was maceration, using 96% p.a ethanol as a solvent and fractionation using the ECC method with three solvents with different polarity levels, namely n-hexane, ethylacetate and ethanol. The activity test was carried out using the paper disc and micro dilution method with the comparison antibacterial clindamycin. The results showed that there was no antibacterial activity from either the extract or fraction of macroalgae Euchema cottonii against the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, but there are activity from the extract and fraction (n-hexane and ethylacetate) against the Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria with the MBC value at a concentration of 15% and MIC at a concentration of 5% (for the extract and n-hexane fraction), while for the ethylacetate fraction the MIC value was at a concentration of 10%. Therefor, the strength of the antibacterial activity of the extract and fraction of Eucheuma cottoni is in the weak category.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a widespread global health issue, characterized by insulin resistance and impaired a-amylase activity—an enzyme essential for carbohydrate metabolism. Phenolic compounds derived from brown macroalgae have been identified as potential a-amylase inhibitors and are promising candidates for the development of novel antidiabetic agents. This study aimed to explore the molecular interactions between phlorotannin-derived metabolites from Sargassum sp. and the α-amylase enzyme (PDB ID: 1B2Y) through in silico approaches, including molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Molecular docking was performed using AutoDock 4.2, followed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using GROMACS to assess the stability of the ligand–enzyme complexes. The results revealed that dieckol (S06) and 6,6′-bieckol (S07) showed the strongest binding affinity with a docking score of -9.57 and -8.95 kcal/mol, respectively and the most favorable binding free energy (ΔTOTAL -56.87 kcal/mol), suggesting its strong potential for stable interaction with the enzyme. These results highlight the potential of dieckol and 6,6′-bieckol as effective α-amylase inhibitors.

Abstract

Diarrhea is characterized by having liquid stool more often than usual, typically occurring three or more times within a 24-hour period. While rarely fatal, it can disrupt daily life and is often treated with antibiotics due to pathogens like Bacillus cereus, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella typhimurium. An overgrowth of Escherichia coli can also be a contributing factor. Recent studies suggest that unripe wood apples may have antibacterial properties. This study evaluates the antibacterial activity of extracts from the peel and flesh of the fruit against the bacteria, as mentioned earlier. Using disk diffusion, microdilution, and bioautography methods, it was found that the ethanol extract inhibited Bacillus cereus and Shigella sonnei, while the flesh extract affected Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli. The bioautography test, however, showed no antibacterial activity from either extract, likely due to their low concentration. In conclusion, the peel and flesh extracts of unripe wood apples exhibit potential antibacterial activity against diarrhea-causing bacteria, particularly Bacillus cereus.
