Abstract

Industrial wastewater generally contains heavy metalssuch as lead, cadmium, arsenic, nickel, chromium and mercury. Contamination of water with these elements is very dangerous and will pollute the environment, so a suitable waste water treatment is required. This review aims to find out the efficient methods of handling industrial wastewater and the benefits of biomass. Many scientific methods are used in this regard, including adsorption, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, electrochemical treatment, membrane filtration, coagulation and flocculation. However, some of these techniques have drawbacks such aswill produce a large amount of metal sludge, making it difficult to recycle metal, and the formation of toxic sludge or other wastes. Of all these techniques, adsorption with adsorbent biomasshas been widely known because it is an economical, effective and environmentally friendly processing technique, so this method is suitable for treating industrial wastewater. The use of biomass as an adsorbent is intendedto help reduce dependence on fossil raw materials and greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

Abstract

Vinasse is a major liquid waste generated from the bioethanol industry and contains a high concentration of sulfate ions that may cause environmental problems if not properly managed. This study investigates sulfate adsorption from vinasse wastewater using a one-pot synthesized quaternary ammonium polymer, with a focus on functional group interactions analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Quantitative adsorption experiments were conducted to confirm sulfate removal, while FTIR analysis was employed to examine changes in functional group characteristics before and after adsorption under various operating conditions. The quantitative results demonstrate that sulfate adsorption proceeds rapidly, achieving a removal efficiency of approximately 87.5534% with an adsorption capacity of 10.6800mg/g at a contact time of 20 minutes under the investigated conditions. FTIR spectra indicate that sulfate adsorption does not alter the main polymer structure and is primarily associated with changes in the intensity of bands related to quaternary ammonium groups and sulfate vibrations, suggesting non-covalent interactions dominated by electrostatic attraction, with possible contributions from hydrogen bonding. Overall, this study provides quantitative evidence of sulfate adsorption from real vinasse wastewater and demonstrates the usefulness of FTIR analysis in elucidating interaction behavior between sulfate ions and quaternary ammonium polymer functional groups.

Abstract

Abstract: The polymerization process with a simple step has become the centre of attention of several researchers. Various polymers have been developed, although in general, they use polymerization with a post-modification method. A quaternary ammonium monolith organic polymer has been prepared using a simple single thermal method in this research. 2-(Methacryloyloxy)-N,N,N-trimethylethanaminium chloride was as the monomer, and ethylene dimethacrylate was as crosslinker. The polymerization proceeded in fused-silica capillary (100 mm, 0.32 mm i.d. x 0.45 mm o.d.) using a one-pot approach method. To achieve the perfect macropores, isopropyl alcohol, PEG 400, and ethanol were used as porogen. Characterization of the surface morphology was carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the existence of an amine group was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The distribution size of pores in the polymer was in the range of 1.29 to 3.33 µm.Abstrak: Polimerisasi dengan proses yang sederhana dan simpel menjadi pusat perhatian beberapa peneliti.

Abstract

Abstract: All production activities will eventually produce waste, especially liquid waste. The nitrate ion (NO3-) is one of the substances in liquid waste that can have a significant impact on water systems and human health. Several methods can be used to treat the nitrate contained in the water, such as adsorption, phytoremediation, and wetland treatment. One of its methods was adsorption. The silica was modified with polymer due to its huge carbon chain. This research was focused on optimizing the ability of silica-based materials using PEG by physically coating them since PEG has a long carbon chain that could be transformed into a helix. In this research, the adsorbent will be prepared from modified silica gel with PEG 4000 by physical coating. Several parameters will be observed, including the effect of coating time, silica-PEG ratio, and PEG concentration. The capacity of silica-PEG to absorb NO3- is being studied. The characterization of functional group content in silica-PEG was carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The study results show that the coating time was 10 minutes with the ratio of silica to PEG of 1:5, and the concentration of PEG used was 15%, indicating the optimum performance of silica-PEG when used as an absorbent, which achieved 84.44 % nitrate removal. An increase in the absorption capacity of silica-PEG demonstrates the ability of silica-PEG as a porous material. It was compared to silica gel without the PEG coating process, which was 9.09% to 84.44%.Abstrak: Semua kegiatan produksi pada akhirnya akan menghasilkan limbah, terutama limbah cair.

Abstract

Synthetic dye contamination from medical laboratory wastewater poses a growing environmental challenge, particularly from compounds such as indigo carmine, which are toxic, biologically recalcitrant, and detrimental to aquatic life. This research investigated duck eggshell as an eco-friendly, low-cost biosorbent for eliminating indigo carmine from medical laboratory effluents. The biosorbent was prepared by washing, oven-drying, grinding, and mild acid activation with 0.01 N HNO₃. Batch experiments were carried out by varying both the contact duration (15–60 min) and the initial dye concentration (10–50 mg/L), with residual concentrations determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Adsorption kinetics were modeled using pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order equations, while equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Peak adsorption capacity reached 8.20 mg/g within just 15 minutes of contact. The pseudo-second-order model gave the superior fit (R² = 0.9989), reflecting that surface-mediated interactions govern the process, though diffusion contributions cannot be excluded. Under optimal conditions, dye removal reached 67.80%, demonstrating efficient and rapid uptake. The Freundlich isotherm provided the best fit to the equilibrium data (R² = 0.9735), indicating multilayer uptake on an energetically heterogeneous surface. Overall, duck eggshell proved to be a practical, cost-effective, and sustainable material for removing dye pollutants from wastewater in the medical sector.

Abstract

Industrial and biological wastes are major contributors to environmental pollution and contain high levels of organic matter that can generate short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) through microbial fermentation. SCFAs are important not only as bioenergy precursors in industrial waste management but also as key biomarkers of gut microbiota activity in biological samples. This review provides a comparative analysis of analytical methods used to detect SCFAs in both industrial and biological matrices, focusing on High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID), and Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The findings reveal that HPLC—particularly Ion-Exclusion HPLC—is most effective for analyzing complex industrial waste samples such as waste-activated sludge (WAS) and palm oil mill effluent (POME), whereas GC-FID is more suitable for volatile-rich wastes like vinasse. Meanwhile, LC-MS/MS demonstrates exceptional accuracy and sensitivity for biological matrices such as feces, serum, and urine, allowing detection at ultra-trace concentrations. These insights underscore the need for optimized, waste-specific detection techniques to enhance environmental monitoring, waste valorization, and health-related SCFA research. Future studies should focus on developing rapid, cost-effective, and IoT-integrated detection systems to support real-time monitoring of both industrial and biological wastes.
