Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the management of community-based arts education at U2 Java Dancer Studio, focusing on curriculum implementation, mechanisms of Javanese cultural transmission, character and emotional intelligence development, and contributions to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). Methods: A qualitative single-case study design was employed. Data were collected over six months through participant observation, in-depth interviews with nine informants (studio leader, instructors, students, and parents), and document analysis. Data were analyzed inductively through coding, categorization, and thematic interpretation. Findings: The study found that U2 Java Dancer Studio applies a structured thematic rotation curriculum with classical Javanese dance serving as a foundational learning framework. Cultural transmission occurs through four interconnected mechanisms: intergenerational learning, embodied learning, contextualization of cultural meanings, and community performances. Dance education also promotes character development and emotional intelligence, particularly confidence, respect, patience, empathy, and aesthetic sensitivity. The studio contributes to SDG 4 by expanding access to inclusive non-formal arts education, supporting lifelong learning, preserving local cultural knowledge, and strengthening community participation in education. Research Implications: The findings highlight the strategic role of community-based art studios as non-formal educational institutions that integrate cultural preservation, character formation, and sustainable education. The study provides practical insights for policymakers and educators seeking to strengthen arts-based educational initiatives. Originality: This study offers an integrated perspective on arts education management, cultural transmission, emotional intelligence development, and sustainable education within a community-based dance studio context, extending the discourse on non-formal education in Indonesia.

In the current era of globalization, many students are experiencing a cultural identity crisis, where they are more likely to appreciate foreign culture than local culture. This phenomenon can be seen among students of SMA Negeri 13 Surabaya, where students' interest in the archipelago's cultural activities tends to be low. This study aims to increase awareness of the archipelago's cultural identity among students of class XII 8 SMA Negeri 13 Surabaya through digital collage learning. The method used is a cultural arts learning approach with the theme of the archipelago which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The results showed that students were not only able to complete the task well, but also produce quality collage works. There was a significant increase in students' understanding of the culture of the archipelago, which was reflected in the average pre-test score of 58 to 82 in the post-test. Some students even published their work on social media, indicating an increase in cultural awareness. This research is expected to be a reference for other teachers in developing art and culture learning methods that are more interesting and relevant to modern technology. The conclusion of this research shows that digital collage learning is effective in improving students' understanding of Nusantara culture. Students show active involvement in the learning process, which can be seen from students' activeness in the learning process.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the representation of the myth of Krishna in the performance of the 12th Kresnayana based on the play Suta Ruhara, focusing on the relationship between dramatic structure, the emotional experience of the audience and the performer, and the aesthetic transformation of performance in the contemporary social context. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, including script analysis, direct observation of performances, audiovisual documentation, and in-depth interviews with actors and audiences. The analysis is carried out through an interpretive phenomenological perspective to understand affective experience as part of the production of performance meaning. The results of the study show that myths are not positioned as static epic narratives, but rather as ethical discourses that are alive and negotiated through the tragedies of Samba, Boma, Hagnyanawati, with Krishna appearing as a figure of moral wisdom and a balancer of conflicts. The novelty of this research lies in the finding that affection in performance does not function solely as a dramatic effect, but as a space for collective ethical reflection that connects myths, bodily experiences, and the social consciousness of the audience. Aesthetic transformation through the fusion of traditional idioms and contemporary performance technologies reinforces the symbolic articulation of myths without eliminating local roots. This study concludes that the 12th Kresnayana acts as a reflective cultural practice that bridges traditions, emotional experiences, and social realities, and offers a model of traditional performing arts development that is adaptive, pedagogical, and relevant to the dynamics of today's society.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Ki Hajar Dewantara's philosophical values with Islamic legal principles within the Hudoq Kita dance tradition of East Kalimantan. Using a qualitative–descriptive approach supported by a literature review of Dewantara's educational thought and Islamic legal theory, this research develops a conceptual framework that connects moral, cultural, and spiritual values embodied in the Hudoq Kita dance. Ki Hajar Dewantara's triadic principles—ing ngarsa sung tuladha (leading by example), ing madya mangun karsa (inspiring initiative), and tut wuri handayani (empowering from behind)—serve as a pedagogical basis for character formation and cultural learning. These principles closely align with foundational concepts in Islamic law, such as maslahah (public benefit), ʿadl (justice), and wasatiyyah (moderation), which emphasise ethical balance, social responsibility, and communal well-being. The relevance of these values becomes evident in the Hudoq Kita dance, a ritual Dayak tradition performed as an expression of gratitude, supplication, and respect for nature. It’s symbolic masks, rhythmic movements, and collective performance illustrate the harmony of feeling, thought, and will (olah rasa, olah pikir, olah karsa) emphasized by Dewantara. The findings indicate that the Hudoq Kita dance functions not only as an artistic and cultural expression but also as an educational medium for internalizing moral and spiritual values consistent with Islamic ethical teachings. Through its ritual symbolism and environmental reverence, the Hudoq Kita dance cultivates sincerity, cooperation, humility, and respect for God's creation—virtues that resonate with the maqâṣid al-syarîʿah in safeguarding life, intellect, and ecological harmony.
