Abstract

Abstract

Critical thinking is an essential skill in the modern information era, enabling individuals to analyze complex information, evaluate arguments, and make informed decisions. In educational contexts, particularly in geography, fostering critical thinking equips students to address real-world environmental and social challenges. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) has emerged as a transformative teaching approach to develop these cognitive abilities through active, problem-centered learning. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PBL in enhancing students' critical thinking across various educational levels. Using OpenMEE software and a continuous random-effects model, the study synthesized findings from 20 peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2024. Statistical analyses focused on the standardized mean difference (SMD) as the primary metric to measure effect sizes. The results demonstrated that PBL significantly enhances critical thinking skills, with an overall SMD of 1.254 (95% CI: 0.875 to 1.633, p < 0.001). However, notable heterogeneity was observed, attributed to variations in educational levels, implementation fidelity, and study contexts. Subgroup analyses revealed that junior high school students experienced the greatest improvement, followed by university, senior high school, and elementary school students. These findings affirm PBL’s potential as an effective pedagogical strategy for fostering critical thinking. The study highlights the need for tailored PBL implementations and further research into its long-term effects and applicability across diverse educational contexts. The results provide robust evidence supporting PBL as a vital tool in modern education.

Abstract

Residents of small island villages are typically classified as low-educated. This study used Liukang Loe Island as a case study to learn the truth about children's education in small island settlements. This study aims to determine how the fishing community understands the importance of education and how to increase public awareness about children's education on Liukang Loe Island. This study, which uses a descriptive qualitative technique with research informants, focuses on the "Harapan" fishing group community on Liukang Loe Island. Information was gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. The type of analysis that was carried out by qualitative through taxonomic analysis, drawing conclusions using the Miles and Hubberman model, as well as directions to increase public awareness about the importance of education through AHP. The findings demonstrated that the Liukang Loe Island fishing community prioritized children's education, as seen by the community's, particularly families', efforts to ensure that children's education was completed. This is reinforced by the family's commitment to earning a living and covering all the children's educational demands. The fishing communities support their children's ability to advance to the highest level possible. Although there are only elementary and junior high schools on Liukang Loe Island, with limited facilities and infrastructure, children's enthusiasm and motivation to attend school are high. This does not deter the fishermen's children from continuing their high school and graduate education outside the island to obtain a better education. There are two options for raising awareness about education in fishing communities: community training and empowerment programs through NGOs, local governments, and educational institutions; and educational assistance programs in the form of notable scholarships for fishing communities in small islands. Keywords: Community Awareness, Fisherman, Education, Small Island

Abstract

Healthcare accessibility is a central pillar of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), yet spatial inequities persist in many coastal and semi-rural regions due to uneven facility distribution, limited transport connectivity, and infrastructural vulnerability. This study evaluates the spatial accessibility of primary healthcare services in Pantai Labu Subdistrict, North Sumatra, Indonesia, using an integrated Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. The analysis combines Euclidean buffer analysis, road proximity assessment, and network-based accessibility modeling to capture both theoretical and functional dimensions of access. Results reveal pronounced central–peripheral disparities: while most settlements fall within the administrative service radius of the main Puskesmas and its auxiliary Puskesmas Pembantu (Pustu), effective accessibility remains constrained in coastal and inland fringe areas due to weak road connectivity and linear transport dependence. The inclusion of Pustu facilities reduces distance-based gaps; however, functional limitations, particularly the uneven implementation of Integrated Primary Care (ILP) undermine service utilization in several spatially accessible locations. Network analysis further demonstrates that buffer-based methods systematically overestimate accessibility, failing to account for indirect routing, corridor dependence, and cross-boundary healthcare use. Underserved settlements persist where distance, road isolation, and limited service capacity converge, forming localized access deserts despite formal coverage compliance. The study concludes that equitable healthcare access in coastal semi-rural settings requires integrated planning that aligns facility functionality with resilient transport infrastructure. The proposed GIS-based framework offers a replicable, policy-relevant tool for identifying priority intervention zones and supporting spatially targeted strategies to advance UHC in vulnerable regions.
